Sup,

Newbie here. I have been training at my home, but I want to make sure I am not instilling bad habits so I am thinking about joining my local gym. The thing is I couldn't find the number in the phone book to find out the hours and if there was a trainer there the whole time. So I drove over there and found the hours posted in the window but no contact info. My question is, unlike a weight gym where you just go in find empty equipment and go, how to I approach a boxing gym. Do I go in and ask for the trainer and talk to him. I don't want to walk in there looking like an ass. I am sure they will know a new face and help me out. Any replies will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot.

This isn't the movies; everyone looks like an ass the first time they walk into a boxing gym. Don't worry about it.

dont think about anything... it might get u intimidated or just mentally not feeling how u should.. and that will lead to u acting not like urself or saying things u wouldnt normally say..

go in there EXCITED. u finally get to join a gym and begin ur boxing dreams..

go in, introduce urself to the trainer, and say u wanna join up and start training
if u wanna become a boxer and spar and fight and stuff, id also get that point across from the gecko so he knows ur there to really do it, not just for fitness.

99% of gyms have a ton of ppl just there for fitness n workout reasons

I'll take that approach. I'm going to try and train as much as my schedule will allow me do to work and family obligations, but I definately am in it to compete and not just get in shape. I don't know that I can make it to the gym everynight so I am going to do the fitness half at my home and bag work and sparring at the gym. Hopefully the trainer at the gym will put me on a workout that fits that. I can probably only make it to the gym 4 maybe 5 times a week.

Do plenty of roadwork, skipping, pressups, situps, pullups ETC at home, always a good idea. If your trainers notices you're doing this, he will start to take you more seriously.

when I first joined my gym, I was just very respectful to everyone, especially those with fast hands, and asked questions and learned as much as I could. Never, once, was I ever disrespected by any of them because I came at them kindly...Fighters by nature are not *******s, they appreciate the fact that you are there and there to learn, so they'll display their work for you on the bag or whatever to let you know what their style is about, much like an artist would show a fellow artist trainee his work or how to paint a specific way with a specific brush.

..it's all a science, a gym fighters are the experiments, the coach is the lead scientist, the other trainers are the assistant scientists, the gym is the laboratory, and the ring is the testing area of the laboratory... That sounded tight I should sig it ;)

dont give anyone stupid looks, dont ask a question until you've thought 2 -3 times about it, and if you see a guy land something brutal, act in awe if you already aren't, just so when you break the ice yu can say 'Nice left hook u had there

Naw I wouldn't disrespect anyone for sure. I want to learn as much as possible. I just hope people will be willing to take the time to show me, I don't want to hold anyone up. I am a quick learner for the most part. I don't know **** about technical boxing other than when me and my friends beat the hell out of each other in the back yard

The first day I want to the gym, I shook every single person's hand and introduced myself, when they weren't working the bag or doing any other exercise. I quickly gained their respect by listening to all of their advice and working my ass off in the gym.

Even though boxers can be the meanest ****ers in the ring, you will be surprised to find that most of them really aren't mean at all, and are very respectful people. If you show them respect, chances are they will show you the same respect.

Just be sure not to bother them when they're doing their exercises, and you should be fine.

i only have three pieces of advice.

1. be respectful.

2. demonstrate your dedication.

3. work hard every time you're in the gym.

yeah introduce ya self to the trainer, and if u are aiming to compete tell him that but dont act ****y bout it, just state it.

and act calm but be respectful, and listen to whatever the trainer says

yeah, that's what I'm saying I love the competitiveness of it, so I want to know what the hell I'm doing, it's just breaking the ice, and maybe my face on the double end bag, lol

When they run go with them, best way to earn their respect. Do everything they tell you to do, if you can't do all the pushups do sissies, if you can't do the pullups ask someone to hold your legs, just do everything

There is an old saying. It goes something like this... "Boxers are some of the nicest people you will ever meet because they have had all of the anger beaten out of them." I think it is true. You just don't really find *******s trying to act tough in boxing gyms. This sport is just too damn hard for people to worry about looking like and acting like a tough guy.

That saying probably describes guailos. Obviously you haven;t had your turn yet!

Man do you ever stop talking so much ****?! I've ****ing had enough of you chatting poo and telling us about your ass bleeding incidents. This time, I'm putting YOU on ignore!

I don't see too much wrong with his statement. Maybe they all haven't had the anger beaten out of them, but I sure as hell have not met many outright disrespectful, serious boxers. If you're eager to learn, and show them your dedication, a lot of them will be helpful, long as you don't ask for help when they're doing their own work in the gym.

Do any of you guys have a full time job and families? If so how do you balance out going to the gym vs staying home with the family? Do you do bag work and stuff at home.
