View Full Version : Who's the best fighter in MENTAL GAMES?

FistFest

I know boxing is a physical sport but for this topic, please think of a fighter who's good at messing with his opponents head. It could be before a fight or during the actual fight. Hopkins is good at getting in your head when he frustrates you and adapts to whatever style you show him in the ring. Toney and Mayorga are good at smack talking intimidation before a fight. Just a sample. :D

Right now

James Toney and Bernard Hopkins are head and shoulder above anyone else when its comes to getting in people's heads.

All Time

Ali was the best EVER.

Also prime Tyson, Duran and Liston got in people's head just in a different way. They got in people's heads by how scary they were not by words.

Yeah. They were beasts to the eyes of many a fighter.

I like B-Hop for intimidation but Tyson even more. He had so many people beat before they even stepped into the ring, the main thing with mental games is that if you can convince someone they can't beat you, they won't.

James Toney, Bernard Hopkins. Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barerra really go at it. Joel Casamayor, too. He's a dick.

Hey Niels, could you possibly make your obnoxious signature any larger? It's taking up half the page, guy.

Ali and James Toney come to mind because they talk when they fight and their pre fight talk really irritates anyone that they fight as well.

There's just something about Tito -- his demenour in the ring is enough to confuse anyone, I think. He's at times very deliberate and subtle, but other times, he comes out w/ some stuff that has you thinking "wow, i didn't see that one coming"

I think he's highly underrated.

I heard the one liner that Bernard came up with or used when he was asked what happens if DLH gets the decision? "How you gonna wake a dead man up and give him the decision."
Priceless.

B-hop, Tszyu, Tarver, Toney, and I think Vitaly. The way last couple of his opponents looked scared ****less gives you an idea.

Man that is SO true! Mayorga is so good at messing with his opponet that he has made ME want to rip his head off a time or two! He gets to me sometimes and I just PRAY for him to get manhandled!! :D
Toney talks a good game too, of course. Tarver likes to think he does  and like Jose pointed out, ALI was the master of mind games!!

definitely, Ali, Hopkins, and hats off to Hamed until his loss.

and by the way, the same goes for just about every german fighter fighting in germany.....you are mentally behind, as you know you have to knock the opponent out or risk being cheated.

Ali,

However Hamed also was good. Cesar Soto started his fight with Hamed pretty good. Until Hamed Grabbed him and body slammed him on the canvas. Then it seemed like soto got discouraged.

Super_Lightweight

Hopkins seems good at it. Roy got into Ruiz's head very well and many other fighters just by his presence. Tyson was an intimidator.

Tarver is not that great at it. He just has good timing in who he fights. Didn't really back up much vs Roy in the 1st fight or against Glen Johnson. It don't take Hopkins two times to beat everybody.\

Freak KOs like that happen in hw boxing. Any one punch can land just right and lay anyone out.

Ruiz went on from that loss to become 2 time world champ. Where Tua? No where. Losses like that end careers but not Ruiz, because he the true champ and returns to do great things.

IMO, i would have to say the great julio cesar chavez, he never let all the **** talking affect him, one time on a press conf. the other guy was so upset that chavez didnt really pay attention to his **** talking, it made the other guy furious wanted to fight him right then and there. Dont remember the guys name though.

Today I think Hopkins is pretty good at that

Lol, some of us are still waiting on Ruiz to do those "great" things"!! Being a 2 time champ is very good, but it's been done even more than that. Ali-3 times..Holyfield-4 times. Both deserve an honorable mention if you want to keep bringing up Ruiz's 2 times.

It's good to regain the title but being a "x-time" champ isn't neccessarily good. You have to lose the belt as many times to get it back.

Good Points TL,

The funny thing is, they were all trying to be 1 time champions. Everytime they regained a title, means they once lost a title. And we all praise them for that.

........????????? Not sure how that works.

BTW how have you been?

Doing good..and you?
I agree, it's a bit messed up, but I think the fighters involved like to focus on the 'winning it back' than the losing it in the first place, which I can understand. I guess being able to regain it means (to them anyway) that they've still "got it"
But we all know keeping that title is the really hard part; much harder than getting it to begin with.
