View Full Version : What is your Body Fat Percentage?
MaTTuP 08-03-2008, 11:01 PM I was just curious what kind of body fat percentage people have on here. I'm starting a new routine because I'm not where I want to be looks wise. I'm 5'10'' & weigh 166, I want to cut down to like 150 or so.
My body fat percentage is 19% which is pretty bad imo.
if you don't know your body fat percentage, you can do a google search & there are tons of calculators where you can input your height, weight & a couple measurements and it will tell. (I would do a couple and find an average).
mspiegelo 08-03-2008, 11:08 PM im a personal trainer and take my body comp frequently with calipers (the 3 point method) at work.
i am 6'2'', weigh 170-175 depending on when i weigh in and have 4.2% body fat at the moment. I am gonna fight 165 this year- sometime between nov and feb depending on when i get the ok from my trainer. cheers.
dobermann28 08-04-2008, 05:57 AM im 16 6'2 and i weigh 177 i have 16% body fat...thats what amir khan came in at his first fight!
but now he is claimg to be a 1.8% body fat....LIAR.
i used to be quite chubby when i was about 12-13(i was the weight i am now when i was 5 foot tall lol)but i have done alot of running and some resistance training and i have a twopack(lol)now!! im setting my self a target of 12% body fat by october...i think i can do it.
good luck with gettin fit!!!
KostyaTszyu44 08-04-2008, 06:26 AM i think mines reasonably low, around 8-10 % or something, im not sure i forget i did check it once might be lower now
Darkstranger 08-04-2008, 06:44 AM I'm 6'2", Currently down to 229lbs from 245lbs. My current body fat percentage is approx. 12%
PunchDrunk 08-04-2008, 08:31 AM im a personal trainer and take my body comp frequently with calipers (the 3 point method) at work.

Uhm, your numbers don't add up... IF you're 175 and 4.2%BF, that means you have a total of 7.35 lbs of BF. IF you're gonna fight at 165, you'll have to lose 10lbs. Somehow I don't see you going below 0% anytime soon... At 170 lbs, you have 7.14 lbs of BF, having to lose 5 of those pounds. Possible, theoretically, but hardly realistic, and definitely not healthy, much less smart for fighting!
4.2% is already freakishly low, to the point of being unhealthy if you walk around like that for an extended period of time. In short, I think you're full of it... (you're welcome to post pics to prove otherwise)
BETTY SWOLLOCKS 08-04-2008, 10:55 AM I'm 5"11, I usually fluctuate from 155-60, 155 I last checked though. Puts me approximately around 8-13%.
Tbh though I've never had a thorough body fat examination, so i dont know my exact measurement, just the approximations of the calculators on the net!

thats ok- you dont only have muscle weight and fat weight. there is water weight too. im not fighting for a while so i have time to adjust my body. anyone can lose 5-10 pounds of water weight. i have been mostly havering around 170 as of late. it used to only be after i worked out hard for a few hours, but two days ago i was 171 AFTER i ate which is encouraging.
my caliper readings are as follow
stomach- 5
chest - 5
thigh - 7
total= 17. for my age group (the readings are interpreting different for different age groups) that reading is 4.6% (not 4.2- whoops). 3% is the minimum- the essential body fat.
yea.. im certainly not full of it. just jacked. i train heavily for boxing, have a good diet, and work as a personal trainer, but you are entitled to think whatever you want. as for pics, im gonna make a myspace though pretty soon for my personal training and boxing stuff, so you can check the pics then... ill bump this for you at that time. peace.
Landon S 08-05-2008, 02:48 AM Those online calculators are ****, if the answer is close then its just coincidence. The only way to get a real measurement is with calipers (or "bod pod") and they can be off usually about 2% either way. Im currently 5'10" 155lbs @ 8%ish bodyfat (6%-10%). Im trying to make welter but as I keep losing fat I keep adding muscle dammit.
Mspiegelo-if that % is accurate congrats, keep up the hard work.
dobermann28 08-05-2008, 08:39 AM does anyone else think amir khan is a liar?
no one can be at 1.8% body fat surley????
i also thought 3% was the minimum...and look at boxers like david haye.
he was ****ing ripped for the enzo fight and he said on setanta he was at 8% bodyfat.
and amir khan does not have as much definition as haye...i bet it was frank warren who told him to lie...just to make him sound like the fittest boxer on the planet!!

Salty 08-05-2008, 09:05 AM Yeah you'd be pretty much dead I would think minimum is 3-5% depending on genetics
good_looking01 08-05-2008, 11:04 AM Mine is 14.1% at the moment which is shocking for me. Should come down quickly though as I am restarting training after a long lay off due to injuries.

5% is something you would see on world class bodybuilders.
3% is borderline lethal and can be maintained for very short periods of time.
As for me I am comfortable at around 9.5%. I have a six pack, but I dont look like something from another planet.
MaTTuP 08-09-2008, 12:43 AM I bought a caliper today and measured to get an official percentage. It turns out that I am 17%. Definately not where I want to be. I'm going to shoot for 5% in the next 6 months. Not sure how realistic this is but I really want to be cut up. I did the math and with 5% body fat I would weigh about 145lbs (i'm 5'10'').
the caliper came with a chart and for my age group (21-25) 5% bodyfat is right in the middle of the lean category. I'm currently towards the better end of the average range. So I have a lot of running, better eating & working out to do.
Mafcherano 08-09-2008, 02:52 AM Calculators do not always get it right! You need fat monitor scales taht send electronic impulses through your fat. 19 is OK. 15 is ideal. If you go over 25 you're getting fat. Mine is 17 and I am pretty lean and fit.
SOY-COMO-SOY 08-09-2008, 07:46 PM Does anyone know where i can get a fat % caliper at? Around how much do they cost? Like 3 years ago I think I was 23% but I have lost around 35lbs since then so im curious what i am now.

be careful- i have been considering fighting 178 instead of 165. with 4.6% body fat (plus id have to lose another 7 pounds), my ribs are kinda exposed and i took a hell of a shot 3 weeks ago that i felt for like 2.5 weeks. i could barely do situps or pullups for the first week, though i did em anyway. i mean, im trying to get my d on point so im not getting hit in the ribs, but a little fat is good. i've been taking extra fish oil lately...
also 5% is not in the middle of the lean category. it is the very bottom (meaning the lowest of the 5-8% range) of the elite athlete range. the target for your age group is 12-15% for the average joe trying to get in shape. those are the percentages we go by at Crunch Gym in NYC where I am a PT. fyi, you can have more body fat than the 5-8% and still looked ripped. someone who is really stripped down to make weight, like paul williams is probably like 3.5-4%. 3% is essential body fat. anything less is considered dangerous- anorexic-low. you need fat to protect your vital organs, joints, and ribs in boxing.... perhaps aim for 152 since that is an actual weight class (if you are planning on fighting). otherwise, for junior welter youd have to get down to 141 which is pushing it... you can always add muscle mass. don't roy jones it either. get accustomed to the new body before you fight. cheers!

thanks for the info. i may shoot for 7% in that case. I'm 5'10'' so 7% body fat would translate to 147.5lbs roughly which is welterweight range. We'll see what happens, Monday starts my official drive. I'm going to chart my BMI & body fat percentage once a week so I can see progress.

Thats the problem with measurements as Landon says they can be out 2% (or more!) either way. Depends on who takes the measurements too because the methods can vary. When I did mine I was about 15% but I personally wouldnt want to lose that much more. You need to take these measurements with a grain of salt too, the thing is to be consistent with how you take your own measurements to see how much you have lost or gained, and not compare them to other peoples measurements.
Im trying to make welter but as I keep losing fat I keep adding muscle dammit.
Gaining muscle while losing fat at the same time is meant to be impossible, (but probably exceptions?).

Those things suck too, sorry. My folks had one...we threw it out. What youve eaten, hydration levels and other factors can seriously affect the readings. 1 day I got a 12% reading (6 months ago), 2 days later I had 22%. Those things are retarded. Maybe there are better ones out there though. Id use it to track changes in % not actual readings.
Bod pods are the way to go Ive heard. Ive never seen one though. Theyre supposed to be pretty damn accurate. You might be able to find one at a big commercial gym.
The_One77 08-10-2008, 07:25 PM i'm 5'6, 125 lbs and 22% bodyfat..(according to my moms estimates)

TWATProbably. They both talk a load of **** anyway like Gomez is world class! No way is he anywhere near 10 never mind 1%. He would be more dfined than Hopkins at 1% and probably dead too.

Bod pods are the way to go Ive heard. Ive never seen one though. Theyre supposed to be pretty damn accurate. You might be able to find one at a big commercial gym.I know they are not accurate but seriously I don't care! I am more concerned about the reading in lbs which i pretty good on this scale. Only reason why I splashed out on it is for accurate weight reading. As long as I make 178lbs I don't care what fat percentage is. I think it is a load of crap. Even if they were wrong and I was something like 22%, I would not care as long as felt lean and fast and health at 178.

not only can i not recall what punch it was specifically, but i cant remember against whom i got it. when it happened, my adrenaline was high and i didnt really feel the punch's severity. it was on my left but i sparred 4 different guys on 3 seperate days (Wed, Fri, Mon) of the week: 1 guy on wed, 2 different guys, each for 2 rounds, on Fri and one on that following Monday). i have it narrowed down to two possibilities... it was either a left hook from my trainer who fights in the masters or a right hook from a highly ranked open heavyweight- a southpaw who trains at my gym (was #2 earlier in year, now is #6 in the country), though he was wearing 22s to handicap himself cause he would school me too badly with 18s (what i was wearing)... by the end of that week, i had a lot of aches and pains, a broken nose, and a bruised rib... lets just say im back to sparring once a week until i hit my camp for my first fight....
my nose is still healing but i have been wearing the everlast facesaver that we have at my gym for sparring to keep bleeding to a minimum... i may invest in the winning facesaver when i get some dough saved cuz i got a big jew schnoz. my coach tells me that the bleeding will become more rare as my nose gets used to the punishment and the cartilidge gets tougher. i can already see an improvement in the level of bleeding (and my defense more importantly)...
fasman 08-15-2008, 04:48 PM 9% body fat....
Spirit 08-15-2008, 10:15 PM 8%, 145 lbs being 5'10 1/2". I haven't worked out or boxed in over two months now though. Back then I was a welterweight (152) with 6% bfp, but with a lot more muscle mass. Now I'm seriously considering moving down to lightweight, not just because I'd be bigger, I used to be a big welterweight, but because I'd retain more speed.
