**** commercials sounds from the likes of Gorilla Unit and 50 Cent are desecrating Hip Hop. More like ****ing Hip POP. Can you ever imagine the old school stars of the 80's or even early 90's getting togther with some gay cracker from a boyband to make a track that sounds like fairground music? Commercialisation has destroyed the urban soul and roots of Hip Hop. Discuss.

Very true but no one can do much about it since the kids love it.

Hip-hop has sold its soul for the dollar

there's always been hip-pop, it's just that nowadays there's less real hip-hop about, and the stuff that there is doesn't get as much recognition

can't pin all hip-hop's problems on 50 Cent and Souljah Boi, people like them have always been around

i think theres still some good hip hop being made...problem is those who keep it real dont sell any records. And i dont hate 50 cent and some of the other commercial rappers...but i would never compare them to the old school. Rappers from the 80's and 90's **** all over the rappers that are around now. But some of the new **** that comes out is hot i aint gonna lie. And for the record f*ck soulja boy, mims, and whoever else.

What led to rappers sellin out and the decline in record sales? Listen to joe buddens "who killed it" He breaks it down better then anyone else in my opinion. Theres a couple things he left out though...things got worse when eminem used annoying wack singles like the real slim shady and hi my name is to get more album sales...in order to sell records you gotta have all them middle school and high school kids buyin your music. At one time they listened to wu-tang, mobb deep, and nas. Its depressing to listen to ghostface killas last 2 albums (fishscale and big doe rehab) (more fish not included) and hear the hard work he put into them and then see that he barely sold any records. Ghostface is one of the best rappers in the game but the majority dont care about skill...they care about swag and if you can dance to it. F*ck the majority

Its a shame that rappers like Ghostface and Nas don't sell more. They deserve to.

The real problem is artists like 50 cent and Jim Jones. They erase the line between pure hardcore and Pop Hip- Hop. There have always been pop rappers, it is part of the art, but there have not always been these "blurring the lines" artists. Soulja boy is simply a party rapper, and gets far too much heat. He dosen't pretend to be anything else, he is not the problem. When Hip Hop fans can't tell the real when they see it anymore, that is what makes things go bad. Artists like 50 cent are largely responsible for that. He is why an artist like Nas can't sell more, because people think that 50 is the realnesss that an artist like Nas is bringing to the table.

In 10-20 years time hip-hop will be for geeks and nerds and will suffer the same plight as rock 'n roll once Elvis came in. Eminem is OK but he started this ****.

I dunno about Hip Pop always being around. Back in the 80's or even 90's you would not hear **** as bad as Soulja Boi or Ayo (WTF) Technology. Even the most commercialised **** back then was more authentic than some of the authentic **** now. Even they've gone commerical too! It seems they all have to in order to get famous.

Lil Wayne wouldn't have even survived in that era. Soulja Boy actually would have a chance, because he would be seen as pure silly party music, nothing more. One of the reasons people give Soulja Boy so much heat now is because people now buy Soulja Boy INSTEAD of the straight hardcore stuff. Back in the day, they bought BOTH, so there wasn't as much animosity toward the party stuff. Now it's like the party stuff is squeezing the other stuff out.

Interesting comparison with the history of Rock and Roll, but I think The Beatles rather than Elvis were the real turning point there. The Beatles turned Rock and Roll into something that the traditional Black Rock and Roll fans didn't even recognize anymore. Blacks appreciated Elvis but just perferred Jackie Wilson to him. I see Elvis as like Third Bass, and Eminem as The Beatles lol.

I thought you were going to say Beastie Boys! I know a posh white guy at work who thought they were pure old school hip hop. I really don't think the party stuff back then was as bad as Soulja Boy. It's just a pure piss take nowadays. i think Gym Class Heroes take the piss too. That Chokehold crap is like something you would sell to teenyboppers. Has an annoying ring to it like the Backstreet Boys or something gay like that, and people think it is Hip Hop!

There is another threas about this I think called Has Hip Hop lost its soul/ I think it has lost it's BALLS.

It was aimed exactly at 50! The gay boyband guy is JT and his squeaky voice about ayo technology just pisses me off the fake usher wannabee. WTF is ayo technology. That cunt is an ugly ****er too, I want to bang him out after that **** movie Get Rich or Die trying.
