does anyone here get coached under a different from the norm sort of style, like hands down, switch hitting, left hand down etc....and how does this work for you?

mine is pretty orthodox, hands up at cheekbones, elbows tight, plenty of movement around the ring and mainly straight punches, when defending i either absorb punches on my guard, slip or parry and counter, i mix it up with hooks and uppercuts in close but from long range i prefer straight shots. decent speed, good bang for my size...just solid i guess

i keep hearing from people about how unorthdox styles just get you KTFO in the end, i'd like to hear from someone who gets coached in an unorthdox style like how brendan ingle trains his guys........

never understand 'unothrodox', my hands are usually quite high but sometimes i drop them when punching (gotta learn) but people tell me i got a rather unothrodox style? and if i keep at it, people will be confused by my style and won't know what i'm about to do?

I always thought it meant an unpredictable style...

unorthodox styling has a rhythm once you tune in his rhythm and figure him out you could finish him off.

But the hard type of fighters is the one who change there rhythm

No coach in their right mind would train a fighter to fight like Hamed.

It amazes me how his trainer let him fight like that. And helped him fight that way.

naseem had the reflexes and attributes to do it

naseem started to decline after he split with Ingle emanuel steward started teaching him combos, keeping his hands up etc...it just didnt work for him

unless you are really good, it could cause problems. That gym are actually quite good and they do have alot of decent pro's and am's. At same time they do also get alot of people who get clocked and taken out. Maybe they were just saving them some time?

I would not do it unless you have coach like Brendan Ingle who is well versed in the bollox of it and who can help you in the corner. If they don't understand it, they won;t give right advice.

I hate unorthodox fighters, they're hard to watch and I don't think unorthodox styles work for most people. Look at Billy Dib for example, he fights very unorthodox and his style is crap. Best to stick to the basic.

i love watching unorthodox guys, its bloody entertaining

billy dib is a bad example, he gets hit heaps and is basically a poor mans naseem

man he got a ****ing gift on wednesday night, it was disgraceful, he lost the bloody fight fair and square...

he will get KTFO by linares or any other good featherweight

Naseem hamed didn't fight that way during the AMs... People only fight that way for one reason, and its excitement. It looks exciting in the ring.

His style worked for him? Because he was over in Europe fighting underclassed fighters? That is why he got ****y and started fighting like that.

He fell because he started fighting quality fighers. Take a look at his first appearance in the US against Kevin Kelley.

yes but he beat kelley didnt he?

barerra schooled him, he showed that patiently outboxing hamed was the key, not coming straight at him.

also this is off topic, i wanna know if anyone here gets coached to fight like hamed or something like that

He may of won, yes. Kelley was old and should of retired long before then. However, how many times in 4 rounds did Hamed get floored?

Constantly being off balance is no way to fight. Wether the punch that lands and puts your down hurts or not is irrelavent. It hurts you on the scorecards. When you are off balance, a jab could put you down.

Uhh hamed lost to barerra possbily because he only had a 2 week training camp and barerra spent 14 weeks in the mountains quietly training maybe? Hamed when he was with ingle, had cat like reflexes, almost impossible to even catch hamed. Think robinson landed like 10 outta 400 punches on hamed within 8 rounds.....

Hamed's unorthodox style was exciting because he had power! If we took the power out of the equation he would just be another clown in the ring. Look at guys like Nadeem Siddique and Ali Shah...they try to fight JUST like Hamed except they have absolutely no power...they look and fight like idiots. Giovanni Segura fights very unorthodox but he is exciting because he has good power. Billy Dib --> no power, unorthodox style --> very boring.

YOU ARE A LIAR!!!!

are you seriousley trying to suggest hamed only had 14 days preparation for
barerra?

hamed only ever fought weak opponents!! he dodged norwood and juan manuel marquez!!

BARERRA IS THE ONLY GOOD OPPONENT HAMED EVER FACED AND HE GOT EXPOSED!!!!!

why did you bring up robinson?????? he was a journeyman with 9 losses
who for some reason was alowed to fight for a "title" against an opponent whose record was 15-3!! LOL!!! nas won his title from a glorified journeyman!
what more proof do you need that hamed was a paper champ!!!

Those unorthodox styles you talk about are unsuccessful for large majority of fighters. They only seem to work for naturally gifted athletes with rediculous reflexes. I've seen people stroll into the gym and try to dance like Ali or try to be like Prince Naseem and it always ends with the same result: a sound beating!

Both fighters were very exciting to watch, but were technically flawed. They were able to get away with it because they both had rediculous reflexes.

I think you'll find a coach anywhere who'll teach you an unorthodox style.

You will always get newbies at the gym trying to fight like Roy Jones. It is awesome. They get their asses kicked and then quit.

yeah lol i remeber once at the gym last year there was akid maybe one or two years younger than me who used to fight hands down and dance like a jackass around the ring, and he wasnt even good at it but he persisted so one time my coach said to throw a hard rip into his guts which he left open to teach him a lesson so i did and he quit lol, took a knee or grabbed the ropes i forget lol, then after a min or two he just left the ring and walked out, didnt come back either!
