kayjay 07-25-2008, 09:58 AM There are a heap of similarities here.
Now some of you cunts are having a laugh in "Yanks on football." That's all well and good, but have I ever said Chelsea should sign Little Freddy?
You know those "Yank" commentators you "take the piss" out of? That's what you cunts sound like when you try to talk international boxing.

BETTY SWOLLOCKS 07-25-2008, 05:42 PM Kayjay if you're using that theory then.
David Haye has proved himself top scorer in the French League(CW), now is trying the premiership(HW) .
Adu hasnt been top scorer in any league, even MLS if i'm not mistaken, so its highly unlikely he'll come in and score 30+ for Chelsea.

Going from MLS to the Premiership isn't really like going from Cruiserweight champ to heavyweight, more like going from watching flyweight amateurs to fighting prime Ali.

Au contraire, Beo, players go from MLS to Premiership every season. The analogy is very cogent.
And do you really omit the 'h' in 'Hampshire'?

A broad Hampshire accent would make Hampshire sound like "Aaaaampshire", and Southampton sound like "Svaaampton" It's dying out though and I don't speak like that. I've got a posh accent with a little bit of Yorkshire when I've been listening to Geoff Boycott on the radio/telly.
MLS players never really make the transition to star in any real major leagues though. Haye will make more of an impact than some unknown American who'd only really be of Championship standard.

kayjay 07-27-2008, 09:52 AM The French League is competitive with the EPL. The CW division is not competitive with the HW division

That's the point of contention, Brother Beo. I don't think he's even a better HW prospect than Audley Harrison was. I can't foresee Haye ever even being a top 20 HW (and neither can most non-Limey fans of the division); that's why this is all so funny. It's outlandish that so few of you are honest enough to admit that.

McBride is ancient.
There are about twenty Yanks in the EPL, though none of them top-level players.

The Heavyweight division is weak enought that Haye will almsot certainly break into the top twenty, and probably top 10.

No it ain't.
kayjay 07-27-2008, 02:19 PM No it ain't.
Players transfer from the French League to the EPl, and sometimes vice versa. French teams compete in the same cups as the English ones.
Cruiserweights don't fight heavyweights with comparable regularity. How would Enzo do at HW? Could he compete with a journeyman of any significance?
The jump from CW to HW is not like moving a single weight class.

Fernando Torres 07-29-2008, 03:02 AM Nah, the UK are good at boxing compared to what you are doing in football. Hatton is still technically 140lbs linear champ and so is Haye and Calslappy from a country of 60mill. 40 mill if you exclude the Barbarians who have their own Parliament, which were previously kept out by Hadrians Wall.
You can't call me biased either, look at my sig and how much I diss some of the bull**** you get from Warren and certain Brit fighters. In any case they have had world champs which is something Adu will never be.
Adu isn't even a real American. Born and bred in Africa which is why he has a little bit of flair and not playing sport like an American cyborg.
I must say however, I do have time for genuine passionate yansk like you or other posters who have really woken up to the beatiful game. That's globalisation! However, I think everyone is right here is taking piss out of them nobheads in that clip:
You scored that V Beckham (average player)
2mins later:
So have you ever played against Beckham?
What a tit.

I appreciate this, but I don't know if it's fair to say I or other Yanks like me "woke up to the beautiful game." I was born into it. Our footie culture always existed in certain corners of the country; we just didn't have our amateur system set up to get our best kids opportunities (it was all local and immigrant-based; there was no national system for developing those players who had potential to play professionally). Only in the late 90's did we start to get it right.
As for Adu being American, I have to disagree. Someone who moves here at the age of 8 is an American. He is a product of our youth system.
He's not "Mom and apple pie" all-American like Landon Donovan, but that only means he's not going to cry when he gets handled by a European manager (in our culture coaches don't have near the level of authority that is abused by European football managers)

I am glad to hear it. But at the same time I really do think where the US have gone wrong until recently is that a working class sport like football had been made into a suburban toff sport! They still need to do more to get the grassroots system going in the ghetto's and hoods and your own flavelas. That is when you will see your Ronaldinhos and maybe even a few Pele's! Landan donovan is a ponce and you can see it. Football is not a ponce game which is why he didn't dare go to Europe. One of the reasons you point out.
Also, to be honest I am not really bothered if you call it soccer as long as you can play the game! Aussies also call it that, and until recently the Irish too while Gaelic Football was still big. The trouble is yanks can't play it! I thought it was 9 or 10 but 8 years old is fairly old in terms of developing natural flair. America have good conditioned players but are yet to have a born and bred player with natural technique.

I grew up playing 'soccer' in some of the roughest neighborhoods in Philadelphia, where the game has a history (most of the 1950 team that beat England were from immigrant ghettos in our city). But for the most part you're right about it being a suburban sport here. Only Philly and St. Louis have had urban soccer cultures.
Only in the 90's did we develop a national system (in Bradenton, FL), that gives kids the high intensity kind of training that the European club system offers.
As for the word 'soccer', that is a non-issue. The game is called many different things around the world. It has no proper name.

It isn't a major issue what it is called but I would prefer footy or even kickball to the s word!
Well if it is true what you say of Philly then it is a start. They can build on that. Forget the 50's bogus team, it was a foul infested ****e game and I fell asleep watching the gay Game of Their Lives.
sukhenkoy 07-29-2008, 03:02 PM Football (soccer) in America is never going to be on the level of European football until American kids stop playing 3 different sports at once in hope of trying to snatch a scholarship to some school, regardless of the sport.
When I played footie here, every single indoor team practice was held on a basketball court. I would juggle as warmup. All of the other Americans on my team would shoot at the basketball hoop, using their soccer balls.
Instead of showing boring ass baseball games on networks for 4-5 hours straight, often a couple times a day, America should broadcast more European leagues, instead of MLS.
Just my opinion.

That's taken care of. The Fox Soccer Channel has been programming since 1998 and shows EPL weekend mornings, Serie A weekend afternoons and German, Argentinian, and French during the week (on replay).

I have Fox Soccer Channel. I have golTV too.
Problem is both come in quite expensive packages. Football here is not nearly as important as baseball, american football, golf, basketball, etc. It's growing, but until American kids start to really play it because of love of the game, and not because their parents shoved them into it at an early age in hope of trying to land a sports scholarship to a college in the future, its not going to that great.

That is the way of modern television. It costs money to follow boxing and almost as much to follow footie.

True. Just seems like European countries devote more attention to these two sports, and make them more accessible to their people (make them broadcast on simple package channels).
Fernando Torres 07-29-2008, 03:18 PM TV doesn't matter as much as the grassroots set up. You could very well end up with a situation where they all watch EPL, but still hagve fat bellies sit at home and can't kick a ball like in England! It would be better to worry less about coverage popularity, that would come anyway if they had proper grassroots football available to kids in all areas.
sukhenkoy 07-29-2008, 04:24 PM What's stopping kids from getting a ball and playing in the streets? In the grass?
To me, the problem seems to lie in the fact that Americans enjoy sports like basketball, baseball, etc. more than they do football. Why - I don't really know.
There's an abundance of clubs in England as well, as well as most other European nations. A great deal of them have youth academies, which are what a lot of kids join at a young age and work on technique. You join a youth football team here, and no coach will teach you technique, because, chances are, they sit at home in their free time and munch on cheetohs.
Fernando Torres 07-31-2008, 03:29 AM Doesn;t explain why the kids who did train hard and are often well conditioned are still ****e!! Americans lack the flair and imagination to succeed at skill sports.
