Our footie culture always existed in certain corners of the country; we just didn't have our amateur system set up to get our best kids opportunities (it was all local and immigrant-based; there was no national system for developing those players who had potential to play professionally). Only in the late 90's did we start to get it right.


As for Adu being American, I have to disagree. Someone who moves here at the age of 8 is an American. He is a product of our youth system.

True. Just seems like European countries devote more attention to these two sports, and make them more accessible to their people (make them broadcast on simple package channels).

TV doesn't matter as much as the grassroots set up. You could very well end up with a situation where they all watch EPL, but still hagve fat bellies sit at home and can't kick a ball like in England! It would be better to worry less about coverage popularity, that would come anyway if they had proper grassroots football available to kids in all areas.
