Pacquiao hopes to entice Mayweather out of retirement
Posted on 24 July 2008 - www.insidesports.ph

From the looks of it Filipino ring idol and national treasure Manny Pacquiao wants to build up a treasure trove for an almost certain future in politics.

After he pushes through with plans for a megabuck showdown with “The Golden Boy”Oscar De La Hoya on December 6 which he believes he can win, Pacquiao is eyeing Britain’s Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton sometime in May or June next year and then, after beating Hatton he hopes to entice Floyd Mayweather Jr out of retirement.

Mayweather who was the world’s pound-for-pound No.1 announced his retirement some months ago enabling Pacquiao who was No. 2 on the list, to assume the top spot.

The plans of Pacquiao were bared by business manager Eric Pineda in a conversation with www.insidesports.ph the other day. Pineda and his wife Macy who will join Pacquiao along with lawyer Franklin “Jeng” Gacal, Governor Chavit Singson and Pacquiao’s charming wife Jinkee on the Las Vegas trip Thursday night said the De La Hoya fight was 70 percent done.

However, Golden Boy Promotions vice president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez who is in Cebu City for the WBA interim super flyweight championship between AJ “Bazooka” Banal and Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion of Panama hinted that the issue of who the lead promoter would be, may well be a sticky issue.

Considering that for all Pacquiao’s exciting style and popularity, De La Hoya still remains the biggest draw in boxing, Gomez indicated that Golden Boy Promotions would have to stage the fight if it takes place.

Another likely stumbling block may involve the purse of Pacquiao who, according to people around him including Rex “Wakee” Salud should amount to at least $20 million.

In a conversation we had with Pacquiao at his Waterfront Hotel suite last Friday, the boxing icon was projecting the pay-per-view numbers at between 2 to 2.2 million which would justify a $20 million guaranteed purse.

Pineda himself indicated they were going to Las Vegas “to haggle” with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who earlier told us that since Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was on vacation in Europe and won’t be back until after Saturday’s blockbuster showdown between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito any agreement would be reached possibly towards the end of August.

This was a sure indication that there were many delicate issues to be resolved.

Those three guys are his own size. DLH and Mayweather are no featherweights (anymore, at least).

Man has got to know when to draw the line..... but you're talking about
$US20M. Win or lose, he's gonna be filthy rich, which I think is the whole point of the fight.
