View Full Version : Mayorga decides not to call it quits just yet
Marjoh 10-31-2004, 12:38 PM It took just about three weeks for former WBA/WBC welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga to announce his return to the ring after having announced his retirement following the brutal beatdown Felix Trinidad handed the Nicaraguan in his last fight.
Mayorga, together with Tony Gonzales who handles certain legal matters for the fighter, told Miami's Jorge L. Perez / El Nuevo Dia newspaper that he will come back to fight again, this time in the 154-pound ranks per the fighter's promoter, Don King's re commendation.

I knew he would come back. I believe he could be a legitimate middleweight with the proper preparation. Lets just hope his absent from the retirement won't affect his boxing. LOL

he should definently drop back down to welter, if he can discipline himself to do so. he looked tiny compared to tito
Tha Greatest 10-31-2004, 12:57 PM i think mayorga should fight spinx again n if he beats him then have a rubber match
then if he wins
he should go up to 154
but not middleweight rite now WAY TO QUICK!
imagine mayorga fighting mosley haha
borikua 10-31-2004, 01:04 PM I would like to see Mayorga against DLH and Vargas at 160...

Vargas is done, sad to say.
m00ks 10-31-2004, 01:51 PM We saw that Mayorga does not belong at 160.
restless_438 10-31-2004, 03:13 PM its good to hear Mayorga will fight again though.
dempseyfire 10-31-2004, 03:19 PM It should be no surpise to anyone. Mayorga should aim for $ fights with other brawler-type fighters, like Margarito or Vargas. I think Wright would make him look like a fool.
Pound4Pound1986 10-31-2004, 03:32 PM well im glad his back, hopefully hes good at 154, i hope he aing got no ring rust from hes lay off
abdiel2k3 10-31-2004, 04:12 PM well im glad his back, hopefully hes good at 154, i hope he aing got no ring rust from hes lay off
idk
it think that time away form the ring is really gonna mess up his technical boxing
i say when he comes back
hes gonna look like a fool just swingin for the KO

you think so, damn o well :( i'll miss his boxing skills
I would like to see Mayorga against DLH and Vargas at 160...
Be careful what you ask for Tito lover. Your man's reputation now rides on that "comeback" fight against cement-head Mayorga. If Mayorga fights anybody with a recognizable name at 160, he'll probably get his ass canned and then Tito's "big comebak" won't look like much will it? It would be something like Tarver's "big win" against the unbeatable RJ?
Instead, you Tito lovers better hope that Mayorga moves down again, where he should be competitive. That way, Tito won't suffer the Tarver Syndrome.

well ofcourse ill miss his boxing skills too
that incredible snapping jab
beautiful footwork
bobbin and weaven
juken and jiven
quick combinations
and those every once in a while perfectly time chosen power shots that he so rarely throws
its amazing how concervative he is with his power shots

Not at all. You should keep in mind three important factors:
1. Trinidad had been away for more than 2 years(29 months)
2. Mayorga had never been knocked down let alone Ko'ed.
3. Maybe Mayorga's chin will not be the same after the Trinidad fight.
kevvy1979 10-31-2004, 05:40 PM Yes Mayorga if he does come back, needs a Tito like comeback, lmao.Someone who is made for him.
Tha Greatest 10-31-2004, 05:48 PM if mayorga fights tha way he did against spinks n tito he's done
his gotta learn from his mistakes
but that wont change
imagine mayorga fightin usin skill usin his jab....never gone happen
Hurlex 10-31-2004, 07:28 PM mayorga will do good at 154....he will rape and kill santos (that *****)..but yeah he should stay away from MW for now...but remember he took good shots and kept on coming he's just not ready for the top MW yet...but will have great fights to come..i say vargas/margarito vs mayorga...i think mayorga beats them both
Hurlex 10-31-2004, 07:30 PM wait how can u say his chin wont be the same..come on...its wasnt like when tito got owned ..when he was dropped he couldnt stand good...mayorga walked back to his corner..so mayorga (a good welter) being ko'ed by a true MW aint sh*t
GxBrak 11-01-2004, 12:38 AM yeah i guess
AKATheMack 11-01-2004, 01:44 AM Im glad Mayorga decided to retutn to the ring he has the one thing all boxers need but most lack....A big set of balls. I dont give a damn any welterweight who will give Tito 3 free shots is a total badass in my book. May be dumb as hell but at leats its entertaining. I wish he was coming back a little lighter though I'd love to see him knock Gatti around
pinkpanther 11-01-2004, 10:21 AM If somebody could have got hold of Mayorga two years ago then he could have been unbelievable, when I say somebody I refer to a disiplined manager and a more technical trainer.

Total nonsense. What fight were you watching back in September, 2001? Trinidad beat the count and walked to his corner afterwards. Maybe you should check it again. So what if Mayorga walked to his corner. Vargas, Joppy, and Reid also walked after the fights, they were not on stretchers. But I must ask, Where they the same after Trinidad?

You've got my number?? Why am I still the champion then?
Explosivo 11-01-2004, 03:53 PM We saw that Mayorga does not belong at 160.
Why? Just because he lost to Felix Trinidad?
Texasboy34 11-01-2004, 04:51 PM I am glad he is still going to fight. Love him or hate him he draws a crowd, and his fights are usually entertaining. I would love to see him, and Vargas fight.

Huh?
1. Trinidad took Mayorga 'cause he knew the guy was custom made for him. Layoff or not, Mayorga was Tito's punching bag that would not back down. He made Tito look better than most of his sparring partners.
2. Mayorga gave Tito a gift in the first round ... his chin. That 2nd left woppled Mayorga and he tried to cover it up with a dance. He knew he was ****ed when he tasted that power. He should never have done that, 'cause it affected him and he never recovered. The knockdown was inevitable 'casue Mayorga showed-up unconditioned and stupid.
3. Mayorga probably won't offer it to anybody like that again. Tito made sure of that.

Give Trinidad a break. Just because he pummeled Mayorga does not mean that El Matador was a tomato can. Everyone knows he was a dangerous and tough opponent. Besides, tell me who took on a bigger risk after a two and a half year lay off.
DamienFromTheAshes 11-01-2004, 05:46 PM Mayorga still took the bigger risk. That's like saying Jones vs. Tyson that Tyson took the bigger risk even if a prime Jones took on a just out of prison Tyson. Jones would've moved up 2 weight classes, would've been killed, literally, and would've taken the bigger risk.
Trinidad is a career killer. Just ask Vargas or Reid. Look what Tito did to Joppy. Sorry but Joppy was a much better skilled opponent than Mayorga. Trinidad was moving up in that fight.
I'm not dissing Trinidad though. It was Mayorga's choice to fight him. It was the wrong choice, lol.
bigdlb12 11-01-2004, 06:45 PM Mayo vs DLH or Vargas or Mosley hell even Wright would be fin to see
Exciterx24 11-01-2004, 08:49 PM Still, no one has mentioned a boxer who took on a tougher opponent after two and a half years of retirement.
{BrownBomber} 11-01-2004, 09:17 PM I Knew He Would Be Back But Not This Soon. He Has Major Money To Make Now That He Put His Name On The Map. He Did It The Hard Way But He Did It.
Lawyers must've cost him a lot ;)
He's not done yet. he just had the perfect style for Trinidad...to beat up.
Winky and Mosley would be bad-style match-ups as well.
I'd like to see him against El Ferroz...now, that's gonna be a war. Guaranteed.
bandito 11-02-2004, 10:45 AM mayorga will fight at 154 i think and i would like to see him against mosley, ouma, spinks or judah. also the best fight might be against antonio margarito!!! that is a fight!!
bigtex 11-02-2004, 10:52 AM mayorga should drop down to 147 again
154 he'll be perfect
he has opppurtunities there. mosely, wright, santos, good fights will help him
m00ks 11-02-2004, 11:47 AM Why? Just because he lost to Felix Trinidad?
No cuz he couldn't ****ing last 3 rounds. He doesn't handle the weight well. It slowed his punching, diminished his power and raped his stamina. Again, MAYORGA DOES NOT BELONG AT 160.
jabsRstiff 11-02-2004, 01:01 PM Mayorga brings excitement....& he's welcomed back.
But....doesn't everyone agree that was a pretty savage beating he just took ?
Don't you think there's a good chance that he's damaged goods ?
I guarantee his durability will be severely diminished.
