CNN are exploring this possiblity and a lot of the computer security mailing lists (BUGTRAQ most specifically) are saying that there's a good chance that the blackout was caused by the virus. From what I've read on how the powergrid is setup, there's a good chance this is true too.

Kinda freaky in an country where the government is so zealously protecting it's assets that something of this calibre and scale can happen so easily....

Not as terrifying as 911 but from a security standpoint, it's a bloody nightmare. The US Government has a long, long way to go here....

I have a friend here in CT who used to be stationed at the Groton, CT nuclear submarine base. He told me some **** about a possible EMP test that used too much gumption. He claims we do have EMP weaponry, he has personally been part of testing it, but can't talk about details. However, he also said it has the power and capability to do this very easily, and that they do in fact test this technology in the long island area. Maybe its a test gone bad, who knows...

I would imagine other **** would happen tho, like pacemakers dying, cars dying, stuff like that if it were really an EMP. OF course if it was, we'd never get an admission from the government anyhow lol.

Basically from my understanding a lot of the powerstations are setup for remote monitoring using the same system that the MS BLASTER worm exploits - using RPC over Windows.....

the stats are somewhere around 35% of americas power is run by computers and could be potentioally hacked and turned off.
