View Full Version : Did I waste my 20 bucks?
Nautilus 10-31-2004, 06:25 PM This moring, I was walking in a northern Hyde Park area towards U of Chicago, where I am visiting for one month.
A poor-looking, but seemingly decent black guy approached me and told me that his car has a flat tier and costs 12 dollars to replace/fix the tier. He said that he and his family is 50 miles away from home, and he only has 83 cents on him. He asked for a few dollars, and I gave him 20.
I am wondering now, is this common in this area to make up stories like that or was the guy for real? I hope he was for real.
I helped because my aunt got in a very similar situation once, and some black woman helped her out the same way I helped this guy.

unfortuantly
it may have been a scam
and no not becuz it was a black guy
just that those type of scams are common
but in the unlikely event that it wasnt
you should feel very proud of yourself
always good to help someone in need
vB Martin 10-31-2004, 06:27 PM Standard begging scam, but you tried to help, so no bad on you.
Here in Hawaii they all need $1.72 to call their cousin/uncle/parents in Arizona. I'm not kidding.

Regardless of it being a possible scam or not, you did a good thing and theres never anything wrong with that! ;)
So many people go out of their way to be mean, hateful and downright cruel as it is (a particular poster comes to mind  ) so any good in this world is just that; GOOD! :)

Dr.Depravity 10-31-2004, 10:21 PM Yeah, dude you probably got burned. I got hit on that one before also. I was lifted for 10 bucks. Its getting to the point that I dont help anyone. I got tired of being scamed and having the favor un-appreciated.
SonnyG8R 11-01-2004, 09:01 AM What is karma?
Hi babycakes. Karma is an option that allows you to approve or disapprove another members post. It also gives you points and makes things in the "store" less expensive. I sent you good karma as an expression of good will.
Now please post a pic of your bare boobs. ;)
Bombardier 11-01-2004, 09:22 AM If people really want money I don't know why they're not more honest about it. Just say, "Hey, I'm really hard up, do you think you could spare a little cash?" Maybe they feel ashamed, or something, which is stupid because any one of us could easily be there in a split second.

DamienFromTheAshes 11-01-2004, 11:49 AM You were definitely scammed. The 83 cents definitely gives it away. Ever in that situation again and you really want to help, offer to help him fix the tire or actually go somewhere and buy the tire with him. Most people have a spare. And if they don't, they'll get help from a relative or friend.
Yeah, you got conned. Sorry about that. It is a shame that people take advantage of people like that. I had some guy try to con me.
Here's the good con they'll try doing. They'll say something is like $20 so you'll only be losing $20 at the most, then they'll try getting more out of you for tax. Especially effective if you have only Twenties on you. Then they get $40 if you help them.
Some guy gave me socks as collateral one time. I gave him the money and told him something like I'm not stupid, I know you're trying to con me. Still let him have the money. He was clearly embarrassed. Money comes and goes, don't sweat it too much. At least you tried doing a good thing.

That is all well and good but consider this......
I took my second wife to Vegas and the exact same scam was pulled on her. The family stuck with the flat tire...pitiful looking kids hanging out the car windows...
She gave them money and I told her she was in the con artist's capital of the world. Sure enough, later in the week, we saw the same family at a different location running the same grift.
My wife said the same as you........."But I did a good thing, right?"
What is good about letting a bunch of kids learn this kind of lesson? Watching their father and mother basically rob people instead of getting a damned job. Keep that "family tradition" alive!
Explosivo 11-01-2004, 01:34 PM Ive had people try to pull the same thing on me. I have never given that much money to anyone as far as I can remember. I just dont trust people these days.
I have been making a point of giving my food that I dont finish from restaraunts to the bums by my house instead of taking it home lately. A couple weeks ago I had a huge piece of a calzone left over in a to go box and this stoner hippy kid asked my for money for pot. I asked him if he was hungry, he said "yea" so I gave him the calzone. He was super stoked and it made me feel good.
On friday I went to the same place and ordered a calzone and my cousin ordered a gyro. The calzones at this place are so big I can never eat the whole thing so I had left overs again and my cousin had a bunch of his gyro and fries left over. I put all the stuff in a to go box and set out to find a bum I could give the food to. I found one guy walking down the street and I asked him if he was hungry. He said that he wasnt because he just ate, but he had a friend who was and pointed him out to me. I go up to the guy who who was so drunk that he was leaning against the wall where he was near the liquor store. I asked if he was hungry, he said yes and his buddy encouraged him to eat. The man took the good, hot food that I gave him, then asked me for some change for "coffee" when Im sure he wanted it for more booze. I was a little dissapointed that this guy who I thought I just did something nice for still had the nerve to ask me for money after I gave him something to eat. Im still glad I gave him the food but it just made me think that even though I did something nice for this guy he still is not satisfied and is asking me for money. Was this guy just an ungrateful old bum or what? Its things like that that make people not want to help anyone out IMO.
Boxerdog 11-01-2004, 02:26 PM Shut up, make me a sammich and give me five bucks!! :D

Kids learn their lesson for both the good & bad things they just have to make a choice they want to do...

I STILL can't give karma.....good OR bad. I asked Rick about it and he doesn't really know why but said it seems like I am Karma'd out. THAT makes no sense since I know I have barely given out the total amount that Tracy has given to three or four of us!

But I've nbeen maxed out for a couple weeks evidently and can't do ****. When I click the karma function I just hear "BOINK".
The only way I can raise someone's bar is to donate a bunch of $$$$$$ to them and then have them send it back which does lengthen the snake.

That's what makes it hard: differentiating between people who are really in trouble and people who try to scam you.
The scammers cause double harm: not only do they rob you of your money, they do make you ignore people who are in real trouble and need help.
