I'd like to hear whom the people of this forum consider, what I like to call, musical genuises.

This isn't who you favorite artist or band is (although they can often be the same), but rather your view of the people you think truely have changed the world of music and made a profound impact. I personally find music as one of the most important things in my life. Here are a few people that I think deserve recognition as musical genuises.

Stevie Wonder (obviously)- single most amazing musician I've ever had the pleasure of seeing, listening to, and researching. He's talented beyond words. If you have never spent alot of time listening to his music....pick up a CD....it will change your life for the better.

Sting
Santana
Elton John
Lionel Ritchie
Dr. Dre

Just to name a few.

OH I almost forgot Clay Aiken....naw just playin.

I don't know much about music. I have never heard of Stevie Wonder. I like his last name though. I will try to find his music and listen to it. You said his music will change my life for the better. I can't wait to hear his music then.

All good names. Wyclef is very good, but Dre has been doing it longer and in a very volatile hip hop culture.

Cobain I don't agree with you on, but hey.....this isn't a debate just an opinion thread.

We did forget Bob Marley.........he's probably in my top 5.

cobain made a huge impact in nirvana's time, not to mention he really started the whole grunge era. nirvana was huge all around the world and cobains voice and lyrics were one of a kind. they were genuis. just look at how big a tragedy it was considered when he died, thats impact. also, you might not like them but i think the beatles should be up here to.

I have listened to Schoenberg. He writes music that sounds strange. It almost scares me. I like the composers you wrote. I didn't know we could write classical composers. I love George Gershwin and Rhapsody in Blue. I love Pyotr Tchaikovsky!

Cobain didn't invent or start grunge and he actually lifted whole melodies from other artist's songs...he was talented but obviously a BIG BIG Pixies & Killing Joke fan. JMHO.

I agree, the media and the surge to grunge music made Cobain an instant legend. I don't personally think it was his incredible mind for music.

It's hard for me to give entire bands such praise......I don't know enough about Queen to give them that much credit, but they did have some music that was one of a kind.

Bruce Johnson of the Beach Boys wrote that......if you speed it up while maintaining it's original pitch (time scaling) it sounds fairly rockin'.

I couldnt agree with you more Yoko. He was one of a kind in voice, lyrics and guitar. He started a whole new era of music and by many will never be forgotten. He was so much more intelligent than alot of people give him credit for; he had a remarkably high I.Q. He had alot to say and made alot of people view alot of thing's differently. Just my opinion. ;)
There will never be another person anything like him.

Yea, id go with that. Although he didnt start grunge, Nirvana certainly popularised it. Cobains influence can be seen in nearly every band out there today. Its unfortunate most are so ****! lol

They say that the term "genius" is over-used.
Boy! You guys prove it! Britney Spears? Husker Du?
Stevie Wonder probably rates as does Hendrix and Lennon ( though I personally think that Lennon/McCartney together did "genius" level work and that individually they fell short).
The word genius gets watered down when you apply it so liberally.

Genius? Bach, Beethoven, Mozart. Among current folks, Chick Corea, Brian Wilson, a smal handful of others.

Barry Cantaloupe? ***** please!

And why wouldn't I, asswipe? I was a professional musician for over 35 years.......I keep up and enjoy all kinds of stuff...from Rampal to Johnny Cash to Yellowjackets to Beatles to Maroon 5 to Mozart to Motown.
Don't try to act like you know me. If you lived the next block over, we wouldn't hang, loser.
