View Full Version : Is Nas a legend????
Kobe Bryant 06-29-2008, 11:47 AM Well some people may question if he's a legend. I'm not one of them. But can you deny his legacy? Can you deny the skill he has presented to us? Can you?
He's got an extensive body of work to be judged off. He's done everything that there's has to be done in the game. Made classic albums, classic concept songs, sent great messages, made classic singles, made great videos, great guest appearances (his verse on Raekwon's album is rediculous), made one of the best disses ever, and sold tons of records. Is this enough? Come in and pay homage or refute the question. All are welcomed.
MetalVomit 06-29-2008, 11:51 AM 1 undisputed classic (illmatic)
3 near classics (Stillmatic, God's Son, It was written)
3 solid and above average albums (I am..., Hip Hop is Dead, Street's Disciple)
1 mediocre album (Nastradamus)
That doesn't include The Firm, or The Lost Tapes, or his numerous unreleased songs (Wanna Play Rough, Blaze A 50, Drunk by Myself)
A legend, obviously.
Kobe Bryant 06-29-2008, 12:02 PM Nas has bangers.....

I'd consider Stillmatic a classic and Nastradamus (although his weakest effort) is not a bad album. I don't understand why it gets so much hate.
The term 'Legend' is over-used nowadays but if you Wiki the word Legend, you will see an image of Nas.

I could do with a laugh.

Well the word "legend" gets thrown around alot, I mostly use it for 80's founders of Hip Hop, but if any 90's figure is a legend it would be Nas. The innovations he brought to Hip Hop were more original than any other rapper of that decade, including Tupac and Biggie.
Oh and It Was Written must be in the top 3 of most lyrical albums of all time, more than any other Nas album. Illmatic was a more complete album though (production, energy etc).
ROSEWOOD 06-30-2008, 10:35 AM I voted no because you didn't list other as an option..I will eventually be a legend but as of now I don't think many , including myself, would say he's one. Its really hard for me to explain so I wont try.

Is Scarface a legend in your book?
Kobe Bryant 06-30-2008, 11:25 AM Rose your my boy. I respect your opinion. But I would like to know a few reasons why.
ROSEWOOD 06-30-2008, 02:16 PM Is Scarface a legend in your book?
Yes!! Because he was here when the South didn't exist!!! I'm not a huge Scarface fan either though..
Big ups to Nas (anyone) making it outta the East because millions have tried and didn't get nowhere..
ROSEWOOD 06-30-2008, 02:17 PM Rose your my boy. I respect your opinion. But I would like to know a few reasons why.
I personally don't think he's done enough for the game..He has a few it songs but I'm not a huge fan of any complete album of his..Just not a big fan of what Nas has to offer..
Don Gorgon 06-30-2008, 02:26 PM I'm on the fence. I was actually disappointed with It Was Written, poor follow up to Illmatic. I think he could have done a lot more, I think the battle with Jay-Z definitely helped Nas. Not sure if I'd have him up as a legend if Ether didn't happen.
HOWEVER, having heard the N!gger mixtape and some of the new stuff you guys have been posting up on here I'll have him down as a legend.

I don't think he needed to do any more with it Was Written, it was lyrically superior to Illmatic...well atleast skillwise, but the production wasn't on the same level.

He helped DJ Premier (technically a Texas producer) have hits from and in New York.
He has had number one albums, platinum plaques and incredibly memorable lines. To the point that people sample him in their choruses, with scratches and such.
He took place in one of if not the BIGGEST LYRICAL battles in the history of hip hop, with Jay-Z, and most believe he won the battle.
He dropped a certified classic with his VERY first album. And quite a few people would say he's had ATLEAST one more, though I would say he's had about three in total. Possibly four, though I wouldn't argue that point.
He helped 50 get his start back after Columbia dropped him by letting him go on tour with the Bravehearts. And we all see how well 50 did, if not for Nas, who knows if it happens the exact way that it happens.
So, clealy, he's done things for the game.
You don't have to like a person to think they're a legend. This kinda sounds like hatred for the guy, coming from you.
When Wayne makes a hit, you say, 'Hits don't lie.'
But then when talking about Nas, 'Yeah, he has some hits but.....'

No hate here...A Nas hit to you aint jack to me..a wayne hit to me aint jack to you..
RAESAAD 06-30-2008, 03:25 PM Absolutely, No question. I knew it was gonna be Rose who would vote no....lolz Rose just hates Nas.....:thumbsdow

Speak for yourself. I've never denied a hit by Wayne. I didn't say I would like them all, but a hit is a hit. You're just discrediting the man.
Don Gorgon 06-30-2008, 03:29 PM I don't think he needed to do any more with it Was Written, it was lyrically superior to Illmatic...well atleast skillwise, but the production wasn't on the same level.
The production sucked on that album in my opinion. I just wasn't a fan of that album, considering he had Pete Rock, Q-Tip, Extra P bless the first album. It just didn't do it for me. I remember buying that album on vinyl and being gutted. In hindsight, I was probably expecting Illmatic Pt 2.
Whether you like someone or not is not what decides whether or not they are a legend.
What did Scarface do for the game? He repped the South, but the South didn't even become dominant untill like ten years after the Geto Boys were kinda big. These modern rappers have nothing to do with Face, they don't even have his approach, most of this stuff now is party music.

Just giving an example playa...
I simply don't see his impact of the game as most of yall do..sorry..

Well his first album set the bar for classic albums. It took rap to a whole nother level lyrically. He influenced Big you can tell from the album cover. He inspired Jay to do his thing. Jay wanted to create an impact with his album in the same way Nas did with Illmatic. But Reasonable Doubt although was great it wasn't recognized until later in Jay's career.
But you are probably thinking in terms of $. But all of his albums except his last have went platinum. Maybe you mean business ventures? Then you are correct but there's only a few that have been able to be successful at different ventures. You have Jay, 50, Nelly, and that's really about it.
I know you probably don't like Nas though. But even aritsts I don't like I give them there due. If they are able to do their thing I can still recognize it.

I agree with part of that.
He doesn't put enough feeling in alot of songs.
That's perhaps his biggest fault.
With that said, some people are able to listen past the voice and feel what he's saying.
His lyrics and creativity make him a legend in my book, but he does have his faults.
It's all a matter of taste whether or not you like him, but I think he's done enough to have all hiphop fan's respect.
Truth 07-01-2008, 10:47 AM Nas is a hip hop legend...
hes got longevity, classics, great lyrics, great song, hes respected by true hip hop fans and other legends. what more can he do?
Truth 07-01-2008, 10:51 AM I agree with part of that.

Thats one thing Jay has over him. Agree?

He put alot of feeling into Ether. Don't you think?
One great album doesn't make u a legend
Truth 07-01-2008, 12:02 PM He put alot of feeling into Ether. Don't you think?
lol. True. But one thing I will say Jay-Z has over alot of rappers is delivery and flow. In my opinion, Jay-Z has the best flow/delivery maybe ever. I've been listening to rap for 8 years, and its the best I've heard. I'm not saying anyone has to agree with me, or should. Just stating my opinion.
I don't have a problem with anyone saying Nas is better than Jay-Z. But I find Jay to be enjoyable to listen to due to his flow/delivery. Its more entertaining in my opinion.

CICATRICES 07-01-2008, 01:29 PM Thats one thing Jay has over him. Agree?
Agreed.
Jay knows how to add little pieces to his song and make them affect the overall sound.
He's good in the delivery and studio game.

I've seen Jay live twice and his delivery is amazing. He sounds exactly the same live as he does on his albums.

Yeah I like how he doesn't yell during live shows. 50 sucks live, lol. hes always yelling everything.

I've never seen the big deal about Jay's mic presence, his first role model (Big Daddy Kane) always had a much better mic presence to me. His second role model too (Biggie).
I agree in general about Nas although he has shown energy on more songs than just Ether. Here are some others.

Kobe Bryant 07-01-2008, 06:07 PM I do agree with the flow. I think his flow is good. I think you can't notice his different flows because his tone stays the same for the most part and his voice doesn't break.
Here's another song of him switching it up a bit.
