I have been training for months now and have sparred a few times with borrowed gear at my boxing gym. It is now time for me to get my own gear. I already have shoes (Adidas Box Hog), gloves (Ringside 18 oz IMF with velcro), etc, and have decided to get the Winning FG-2900 Headgear in black for sparring.

Now i need to choose my no foul protector. I already will have to buy new headgear for competition (the winning is only good for sparring), but I want a No Foul Protector that I can use to spar AND compete with. I want a protector that offers good support, offers wraparound kidney protection and most importantly, is USA-Boxing Aprroved!

Does anyone know if the GRANT CAMPEON no foul protector ~ http://www.grantboxing.com/detail.aspx?ID=22628 ~ is approved for U.S. Amateur Competition? If not, what else would you recommend? Thanks guys!

I use this one:
http://www.ringside.com/detail.aspx?ID=25794

It doesn't have the USA boxing approved patch but i've never had my cup checked out in competition, they've always just asked if i had my cup and mouthpiece, and it says used by most amateurs and pros on ringside.

Thanks for the response. I haven't tried the Grant Pro, but I heard that when get punched on the waistline or just under with that model on, the bottom of the cup lifts up (because the protector is kinda stiff) and your junk can fall out. Then the protector clamps back down on whatever appendages may be sticking out. My trainer said he experienced that and recommends a cup underneath the Grant Pro No Foul Protector as a result. He said it does do well in terms of protection other than that as well as kidney protection and mobility.

Its funny you mentioned B-Hop wears this no-foul protector, and I did see it visible in the Tarver fight (which I was at and was ****ing awesome!). This might explain why the low blow by calzaghe that didn't look obscenely low had such an adverse effect on him. He mentioned something about the "tip of his penis" being on fire, so that sounds like it could be from what I described above. Have you experienced anything like this before as a result of the "clamping" issue?

But dont forget the bigger the cup the harder its goona be to get used to! I use this

And sometimes I also use these compression shorts that come with the cup(which in my view is more comfy than the normal boxing cups)

I have grant 16ouncers for sparring.
I don't like 'em that much.
I absolutely LOVE their super bag gloves (just wish they had a little more protection).
The training gloves don't fit like the superbag gloves - the 16 ouncers fit huge, with a hangar bay for a pocket.
I haven't had a single pair of grants with a bunch of padding, the 16 ouncers seem to be the biggest example of this, and I can't see using them for sparring.
There's a lot of padding over the thumb & the back of the wrist which seems a lil bulky.
The extra long cuff is kinda nice- makes you feel like you can punch through a truck.
I have to wear knuckle guards with these gloves - which takes the edge off of them for sparring purposes as well.

do you wear the cup/compression shorts under the title cup? my trainer was recommending doing that if i got the grant pro protector because of the aformentioned problem.

anyone know if they make a hook and loop style reyes? that looks snug.

how is the winning no-foul? discuss.. discuss....

ps. i actually got the fightgear mexican headgear instead of the expensive winning. i figured that since collazo's the only dude at my gym with winning, i didn't want to seem come across as some punkass rich kid who just buys the best **** before i even get my box game up. the fightgear has served me very well in sparring!

wtf? what are you talking about? so you have to be a rich kid to afford 170 dollars? you have to be looked at as a rich kid if you want to be smart and protect your health the right way? wow I dont know what type of gym you go to then! going cheap on headgear is not smart. Alot of people on here and at gyms think its smart but trust me its ****ing stupid. same thing goes for gloves

ever spar luis? no way. i wouldn't be able to hit him once. the difference between any pro and a beginner or even semi-accomplished amateur is worlds apart, much less a world champion. i saw him spar will rosinsky- ny 4 time golden gloves champion at 178 and will could barely find him!

its not stupid man. there is comparable headgear to the winning at 70 bucks (fightgear) and 80 bucks (grant). you dont need winning at all and many pros dont use it, though a lot of them do (the ones who have won big purses usually). its a nice luxury though, im sure.

unless your sparring pros that hit hard as **** and you are sparring intensely many times a week in training for fights, its not gonna make a huge difference. i spar once a week tops, mostly ever other week. i've also tried winning gear and it seems a little better than mine, but not by much.... so no, its not stupid at all dude. chill out.

ps the winning is over $200 once you account for shipping. and forget about the facesaver one- that baby will cost over $350!!!

i just got a large grant pro cup in the mail and the green 16 oz pro training gloves. the gloves are sweet, but lets talk no-foul protector....

this thing does not cover the jewels too well. i put it on and tapped myself lightly and it killed. i was "hanging" below the edge of the cup and can't seem to position myself inside the cup because it doesn't hook under that much at all like, say the Reyes cup.

and how am i supposed to fit my junk into that tiny pouch in the cup?!? you couldn't fit a peach in there... I tried "hooking the cup under" to get it underneath my boys but its not really working all that smoothly. do i have to get an athletic cup to where under this bad boy or what?!? i mean it was expensive and i dont really want to return it and go through the hassle, but it seems weird to have to wear a cup under a cup.....

anyone who has the grant pro no-foul, how do you deal with this problem?!? if a light tap hurts my boys, imagine what a hook or uppercut on the cup will do- yiiiikes!

You should buy the cup from title much cheeper does the same job and is also Usa boxing approved. Title is basically the same thing as everlast owed by the same company.

thanks for info everyone- i was worried this thread was dead... the title **** looks like it is snug- maybe one day i will try it out, but i am broke now... i don't want to return because its a huge hassle to ship back and forth, etc, and i feel i can resolve it through tailoring, wearing a n athletic cup underneath, or some other creative means. probably tailoring is the best option. i also just purchased the compression short/cup from title- the shock doctor ones. im ****ing broke now, so no more boxing gear, lol. at least everything looks tight, haha. ill get some pictures soon. please upload the picture of the "butt strap" tailoring job so I can see how that worked out.

after getting my grant large cup altered it fits perfectly. no need for the cup underneath it (which just seems redundant to me) and now the cup "hooks under" enough for ample support. no pics, but i took my first vids today at the gym. one is of sparring. i ****ed up dudes shoulder with a right hand so theres only about 2:30 of footy, plus the cameraman was having problems with the camera.

i'm the guy in the green grant pro cup. i was using a lot of movement because im in better shape than the other guy, plus he has a crazy chin and lots of power (his nickname at the gym is margarito, lol). also, im still being cautious of my nose, which was broken a few weeks back.

theres also a video of some padwork in which im wearing the cup. other gear includes an everlast facesaver (the gyms, not mine), and a brainpad double mouthguard. im wearing compression shorts without the cup in it. gloves are imf 18 oz. he's wearing a fightgear traditional headgear, a grant campeon no-foul cup (old school in red), and imf international 18 oz gloves....

this is my first video, and i dont really plan on posting more until i have a few fights. obviously i still have a ways to go....

as for my review, in addition to the snug fit (post-alteration), i find it really easy to move in this cup. it is really light too. a little thick, but light. it increased my waist circumference from about 32" to 41"... i can wear Medium everlast trunks without a cup, but with the cup, it has to be XL, or even XXL...
