Yep, since I started reading their lyrics...since its ****ing impossible to really grasp all that Maynard is saying by listening, they are now my favourite band. This is amazing since I don't even listen to rock music and come from a background enjoying jazz, hiphop, classical and breakbeats.

Lateralus is now kicking the speakers, hmm...

Good choice. Excellent musicians too. Anemia and opiate are great CDs also

Most department stores won't carry it. You know the deal. If you don't understand something it must be bad.

fock sake that sucks...I got hooked onto them with 46&2 with the genki sudo clip, then I started reading about them and lots of people mentioned the lyrics, so I started reading em. My thoughts in their lyrics, especially Aenima.

it's amazing how many tool fans dont even realize "Eulogy" is a religious song. Definately gotta read the lyrics tho, i agree that its nearly impossible to understand :)

Its wierd to think of Maynard on the wrestling team in high school. You can also download a pic of him doing BJJ with one of the Gracies. I just see him doing Odd things for hobbies.

I also read him interviewing Ricksons Wife on nutrition. That lady knows her stuff.

...its not a religious song.

It's about Matyrs in general - not nessesarily to do with any religion whatsoever. It's as applicable to the do-gooders on TV who ***** about every ****ing thing and it can be applied to a psychotic hamas bomber.

Eulogy
He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him.

So long.
We wish you well.
You told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well then, so long.
Don't cry.
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried.

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
We'll miss him.
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart.
We'll miss him.

No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all.

So loud.
You sure could yell.
You took a stand on every little thing
And so loud.

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me.

Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you ****in lie.

Don't you step out of line.
Don't you ****in lie.

You've claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised to hear your own eulogy?

You had alot to say.
You had alot of nothing to say.

Come down.
Get off your ****in cross.
We need the ****in space to nail the next fool martyr.

To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For your sins and your lies. [sic]
Goodbye...

if its not religious, explain who you think he is referring to

Magic Man

The song's lyrics speak metaphorically, not literally, Tool aren't so petty and short-sighted that they need to bomb on Jesus and Christianity, their eyes are more open than that. They speak of any matyr in general, this song is grand in scope, macro not micro.

i should rephrase that to...

A martyr is someone who is willing to sacrifice himself to get a point across about his religious belief (commonly) and other beliefs.

read the lyrics, then tell me if according to common religion, jesus didnt cssacrifice himself on the cross as referred to here, thus indicating a religious meaning to the song in general. :)

sorry i posted this last one right after your instead of before it, but ok. i guess everyone can interpret it how they want :)

Magic Man
07-30-2003, 12:41 PM
many matyrs sacrifice themselves for the sake of religion, there are many who don't - martyrs are those who suffer a great deal for their personal beliefs (religious or not).

An example I can think of is that American girl who went to Afghanistan, felt so at one with the Afghan people...that she somehow go rolled over a tractor.

She had a lot to say...she had a lot of nothing to say...so long.
we wish you well...you told us how you weren't afraid to die...well then, so long...don't cry...or feel too down...not all martyrs see divinity...but at least you tried.

...sound familiar?

considering i didnt write the song, and im pretty convinced you aren't really maynard typing behind that screen name, im just gonna stand by my last comment that i suppose everyone can interpret it how they want lol. I can see it meaning many different things in all honestly.

Crystalline Dream
08-19-2003, 03:51 AM
oh god that's a good question. How can I choose just one? I've been stuck on listening to ticks and leeches for a couple of months now :)

The Golden Bear
08-19-2003, 03:55 AM
The drum work alone on ticks and leeches alone is worthy of a fav song pick.

Lyricly i think Prison Sex is my fav.

But musicly i would have to pick something from Laturalus. hmmm..

Crystalline Dream
08-19-2003, 04:02 AM
I love the lyrics to the grudge because they are so true.

I have yet to find someone who will sit and listen to Eon Blue Apocalypse and Triad with me because I have a love for instrumentals. Makes for good sex music.

Schism gets me ****ing pumped. I can't listen to this song and not end it almost screaming the lyrics with Maynard.

Ticks and Leeches is just pure genius.
Hope this is what you wanted.
Hope this is what you had in mind.
Cuz this is what you're getting.
hell yeah.

I find Reflection if I listen to the lyrics to help me out when I'm feeling down. just talking about taking what light you have in your darkest hour and let it keep you and help you through it.

One of the best albums ever put out.

The Golden Bear
08-19-2003, 04:08 AM
I love the instrumentals on Laturalus. They are one of my fav parts of the cd.

His lyrics on Laturalus to me seem more metaphysical and consciousness elevation related thoughts. Over all Maynard knows loads about the fringe/new age/alternative religious thoughts. I admire that.

I move meditating to the live version of Pu**** on the Silival cd.

Sometimes i wish i could talk to him about his spiritual ideas.

Crystalline Dream
08-19-2003, 04:27 AM
I would like to sit with him and talk to him about what the lyrics mean to him and what he originally wrote them to mean. I know what they mean to me, but I would like to know what inspired him into writing the songs in the first place. The man is a lyrical genius.

After I asked him these things I would tie him to the bed and be a bad girl.

The Golden Bear
08-19-2003, 04:30 AM
true that on the genius part. but i would not let him **** me. I might **** him.

You seen all the videos? if not you need to!!

The videos from Laturalus are perfect. i love the work they did with Alex Grey's art. He is my 2nd Fav Painter.

Crystalline Dream

The Golden Bear

46&2 is now my favourite song, cause I understand it now - its is possibly the most complex song as far as background knowledge is concerned, this song shows me how deep and intelligent Maynard is.

Tool fans, check this site out if you havent already, it is much better than most sites delving into the meaning of different songs of theirs: http://www.innuendocornecopria.com/frames.htm

Great web site. It's ruined half the songs for me but very cool.

Who is the mysterious man with the surreptitious voice that left a bewildering message in MJK's answering machine? Why such disturbing words and threats? Was the entire situation a true event or a fake used to confuse the listeners that bought Aenima? Whatever the situation was, It'll always be immortalized behind Tool's track number #6 in Aenima. The way the story was documented was that Harry Manback was Maynard's old roommate back when Maynard wasn't Maynard. Money was tight and it is safe to say that all the roommates in the one bedroom Los Angeles apartment were pretty thrifty. Harry, the most quite, violent and rebellious of them all was infamous for making dirty and long distance phone calls and never having the responsibility to pay the bill completely. One Friday night, drunk Harry decided to "relax" and started his dirty phone-call rampage while he ate his pepperoni and mushroom pizza. When the bill arrived, Maynard and the rest came to the conclusion that the only solution to the never ending money problem was for Harry to move out. When the slightly-plumped, hairy Italian bastard refused, they waited until kicking him out wouldn't be a burden. Once the 400 pound individual killed a 24-pack, all 5 roommates drove Harry to Griffith Park and left him there with some of his possessions such as his books on Black Magic, marijuana, Gillette razor blades, clothes, Los Angele's Dodgers hat and very little money. Surprisingly, the big animal never returned but he left the following wicked message behind:
