both guys were masters of unleashing brutal knockout power at close range, but who would you give the edge to?

both guys had great power. My pick is Joe Louis no question about it. Robinson actually for most of the time threw round and looping but accurate punches, and he threw them in bunches. Louis was a tremendous combination puncher right up there with Prime Tyson. Joe's punches were short and accurate. he minimized the distance very well.

but is the question asking who threw shorter punchers or who fought better on the inside? to be more specific id also pick Louis on the inside, Robinson was the mini Ali, he liked to fight on the outside but he was also a good in fighter, but Joe was better IMO.

although in the Conn fight, in some instances Billy was getting better of the exchanges on the inside

No one was better at short distance punching than Joe Louis. Not only was he more accurate and percise than Robinson, but he also punched harder pound for pound.

Joe louis was the perfect puncher.

Taking nothing away from Robinson whom I regard at the best fighter EVER regardless of weight; but Louis could KO a man with a punch travelling six inches.

I think Joe Louis was the better short range puncher, he threw some of the best short, compact shots I have ever seen.

No one was seeing Joe with the short punches

I would say Ray, because he could do it with his back against the wall.

As Robinson said himself, he did not have great power. He was just one of the best ever at throwing punches that opponents didn't see or expect. His opponents got blindsided by those looping punches coming up from the waist at awkward angles.

Poet and im sure you were there measuring his punches with a measuring tape

Louis is the best at this but here are some examples of Robinson throwing short punches and KO'ing his opponents:

1:10, 1:40, 1:50, 2:45, 4:05 (that body punch is like RJJ-Virgil Hill).

the more i read your posts, and especially this one (thanks for confirmation), the more i tend to think that you're an ex-convict who shared a cell with mike back in 90s, we all get the idea what happened in that cell.

Hmmmm. I think it has something to do with the fact that A) You have Michael Gerard Lector in your avatar; or B) You're the biggest Tyson nuthugger on this forum.

Dude. I've read plenty of your post and it ALWAYS somehow gets back to Tyson. It aint me that's obsessed it's YOU. So whenever I see one of your posts I'm not going to give you a chance to work the argument around back to Tyson: I'm going to peg you for the Tyson c**k sucker that you are.

Unlike Tyson I've never done time, but I'm sure if you asked Michael he'd tell you about the time he was traded for a pack of Newports. Hmmm, sounds like you and Mike have a LOT in common.....smoke if you got 'em :D

Poet LOL you got some nerve trying to pin it all on me. i didnt ask you to bring tyson into discussion. i also had sugar ray robinson, ali, sonny liston, ray leonard, and james toney among others in my avatar a while back, i dont see your arguement here. you telling me you gotta disrepsect another fighter because he's in my avatar...hehe....well go right ahead

here's some sad facts about you fella. you've been a member of other boxing sites posting blind hate about tyson, you gave mike remotely no chance at beating a vulnerable frazier, you said jack dempsey's defence was better than tysons' LMFAO, and you're also tried to pin lies on tyson to back up your arguement (tucker anyone, refresh your memory?). and just because i dont tolerate that bull****, i guess by your deluded admission that makes me a nuthugger huh :nonono:

for someone who's in his 40s i gotta say, you're the most undeveloped and retarded specimen for that age, and truly are a pathetic excuse for a poster, and your ignore list speaks volumes about people's opinion of you

one more thing, i got a treat for you

I was simply rooting for Forbes becuase he was the underdog, and i didn't pick him to win the fight. If you go over a poster's history, then go over it correctly. Also, i had that red bar becuase some dumbass by the name of msagrain gave me 5 in a row( when unlimited karma was here) becuase i reffered Calzaghe's resume to dirt. I had green k before and i have it again now. I have green k now because of the posts i have owning you. :owned:

Personally I prefer the Holyfield fight over the Douglas fight; and no doubt you're fingering yourself to Tyson - Spinks, but that's neither here nor there. My ignore list is for people who are A) Complete idiots, B) *******s, or C) Both.

As for YOU, it's easy to pin the Tyson subject on you because it always comes back to Tyson in your posts. Period, end of story. You're obsessed with people who don't share your fawning worship Michael Gerard. As for me, my issue isn't with Tyson it's with nuthuggers: AKA fanboys, anus suckers, mind-numbed robots, true believers, and my favorite: KoolAid drinkers. Which one do you prefer because they all apply to you!

As for Tyson, I've watched the Tucker fight many times and no amount of Tyson worship is going to convince me that fight was a blow-out. You KoolAid drinkers chant that like a mantra (along with other BS myths like "Holyfield cheated" or "Tokyo never happend" or "If he had kept Rooney" ect). Giving him NO chance of beating Frazier? No. Picking Frazier over Tyson isn't the same as giving him no chance. The ONLY fighters I gave Tyson no chance of beating were Ali (too good and too fast), and Foreman and Liston (bad style matchup). As a rule I believe anyone on the ATG list or close to being on the ATG list is capable of beating anyone else on the list unless there is a style difference that makes it prohibitive (see Foreman - Tyson, Foreman - Frazier, ect). Now, giving them a chance doesn't make it probable. It means on any given night it COULD happen. If the two fighters fought ten times it's another story. Then you'll see the higher rated fighter pull ahead.

Unlike you, people don't see me worshiping any particular fighters in my posts. I have a more realistic view of boxing than that. For example, Floyd Patterson is one of my all-time favorite fighters.....but you'll never see me trying to make an ATG out of him. I have a realistic view of his abilities. You see, I watch boxing with my brain not my emotions.....unlike you who watches boxing with your d**k. I can separate things and enjoy watching particular fighters on one hand and analyze boxing with my brain on the other.....and never let the two mix.

So keep on showing yourself for what you are: A KoolAid drinking fan-boy who can't distinguish between fantasy and reality; who thinks not with his head but with his genitalia :boxing:

bad pun intended

Louis V Walcott II - the barrage of short lefts and rights that louis took walcott out with was devestating.

Louis V Conn 1 - the 13th round and Conns ego gets the better of his discipline and he opts to take louis out - that flurry of hooks and uppercuts that joe landed in close just swept Conn aside 'brutal'

welsh heavyweight Tommy farr took Joe the distance in his first defense but even when talking in his late seventies he said he still suffered headaches from when a short right on the inside from Joe hit him between the eyes -

thats power .
