Who are they?
K2 come to mind first with their Phds in Philosophy and Sport Science, but who else?
My favorite character in sports is Vlasov, a heavy-weight weight-lifting Olympic Champion, who has a doctorate and is a well-known writer. As far as I recall, he wrote a good book about the first month of the Nazi-Soviet war, in particular covering heroic defense of the Brest fortress in Belarus.

Off the top of my head I remember reading that Davaryl Williamson has an MBA from Michigan State.

Calvin Brock has a Finance degree. Of course academic qualifications doesn't automatically equal intelligence. A trip round any north American College will prove that.

Good book? More like propaganda artist it sounds like. The soviet union lost thousands of kilometers of territory, MASS battlefield defections, 300,000 men surrendered at once in one battle, and thousands of casaulaties.
I dont know though, there were spots were the soviet army did actually fight good, but I think that was later than in the first month, notably in Sevastopol.

You dont get punch drunk boxers no more. They all talk well and dont stutter even at the end of their careers, apart from a very few.

formal education as people generally get it today is very overrated.
informal education in whatever manifestation, or learning by somebody or people you know, far superior in an overall sense. Can't even be compared.
formal education in some areas and situations can be a usefull supplement.

Gene Tunney seems to be overlooked so far.
Used to get mauled by sportswriters for reading the classics & discussions with the likes of Bertrand Russell.
Retired at the top of his game, married a heiress, then went on to develop a multi-million dollar business.
Seemed like a pretty bright guy to me.
