View Full Version : I'm falling apart!
mickeyb 06-09-2008, 06:32 PM Jesus Christ.
My knee today just gave way to excrutiating pain on the stairs when i put full weight on it.. the aching - i've gotten from running has got alot worse. It's really developed. :(
Its comes and then goes rapidly but it's awful and I can't whatsoever run on it. Anybody know what this is/had it before?
Got any alternatives to running that I can do?
Oh yeah- i'm still mobile, can hit the bags, skip, shadow box, spar with no discomfort whatsoever.
Can anyone help?
RonRoss 06-09-2008, 06:35 PM Stop your running for a few weeks, Make up with it with Skipping and up your rounds on the bag to keep your stamina up to par, After a few weeks go for a slow run ... If the pain persists get to the doctors.
Spambo boy 06-09-2008, 06:36 PM I can help...
lose weight you fat yank wannabe
Team Mayweather 06-09-2008, 06:37 PM Well skipping is like a slower version of running, try that. Or use a treadmill a lot easier on the joints. Alternative to running could be walking fast?
Did it hurt as you leant forward going up the stairs or as you eased off on one foot? Your knee may just have locked itslef and a few squats or stretches could sort it out.
Spambo boy 06-09-2008, 06:37 PM Actually i can't talk, I need to lose some weight, i've got shin splints at the moment from running overweight.
I'm such a fat yank.

Get yourself to doctor and i suggest you don't train the injured muscle group until you do get the ok. Try doing more upperbody work to compensate, i.e. press ups, pull ups and/or general core work.
Personally im always worried about injuring/straining/spraining myself when im training, when i was 17 i sprained my left abductor muscle in my left leg, i decided to continue training on it and i got myself 8 months of physio and pain. Damn i hated that.

No, it wasn't a locking out. It was like someone pushed a knitting needle throug the flesh part of my knee joint! made me jump up and show "****ING HELL FIRE!" which the kids coming out of there classes just loved. I've been hammering the running lately... it's definitely a result of that.
I'm gonna lay off the running. When i'm off for the summer term holiday, i'm going to go swimming once a day, get a few miles a day in the pool then train.
mr tricky 06-09-2008, 06:47 PM could be ligament probelm,

:lol1: I don't think ya could have described it worse lol.
Yeah swimming would be good for ya. Maybe cycling but your still stretching the legs but not putting weight on them.
It seems your navy days are now over, sailor.
dfwtx 06-09-2008, 07:14 PM could be the shoes. are they worn down?

lie on your back and lift your sore leg up to about 2 feet off the ground, then twist it to the outside slowley...it is really painful but i was back running within two weeks.

Unanimous 06-10-2008, 08:34 AM What about swimming. Too many people overlook swimming but if you can't do the running then the swimming could be just what you're after!

Yeah I said that earlier. I'm a school teacher so i got the summer off. Think i'll get up early and take a few miles in.
Is swimming just as calorie burning/beneficial to stamina etc?
nedcmk1 06-10-2008, 08:53 AM Go see a Dr. The last thing you want to do is turn a minor injury into something terrible and need some sort of replacement surgery. It sucks not being aboe to train for a bit until you get it sorted out, but in the long run you'll thank yourself.
2 weeks off now can save you from having to stop for a lifetime.
JayCoe 06-10-2008, 09:07 AM Haven't had my knees go but i've had my ankles go, I put mine down to doing the running, too much of it can injure your joints, I mean look at it this way, 5 days a week or so your joints are under alot of pressure whether it's just running on a non training day or whether it's skipping, running on the spot, tuck jumps, pike jumps etc, calm down with the running for abit, let your knees sort themselves out and spend the days off doing more bodyweight exercises that don't put so much pressure on your knees.
danny stash 06-10-2008, 09:43 AM I got into a fight 2 saint paddys ago and had a guy kick my left knee in when I was choking out his friend. That being said I have nursed that knee after running since. My advice is ICE ICE ICE that knee EVERYTIME after you finish running. You will notice a marked difference. Also do not run two days in a row and try and use the treadmill as much as possible. Only roadwork with no pain. It will get better if you ice it and I also include an anti inflammatory immediately after. Good luck

if the sole is worn down its very likely that's the problem, try using another pair or going barefoot on a treadmill or something once it's calmed down a little. i had a friend have the exact same problem and it turned out to be the shoes.
mickeyb 06-10-2008, 11:23 AM I've probably just ran to much and my shoes are looking scruffy. Could be that.
I was runnign 3 mile a day and doing sprints each day at training later, 4/5 times a week plus training five days. Can't have been good on the joints.
oovavu 06-10-2008, 01:48 PM Get on your bike son, find a nice trail with lots of gradients and try that I mean its the closest thing to running without running as you can go lightly, sprint, whatever you want, I've got a 24 mile round trip to work all along a river and through the countryside, it sure beats the monotonous nature of swimming. (Not that I could swim to work of course, concrete is pretty viscous but you get what I'm saying)

Don't you arrive at work sweaty as **** though?
Thats the only thing that puts me off. Biking though seems like a good idea.

You must have some showers at your school? We have an emergency shower so I just use that and put my head underneath the hand dryer lol. ( if you do that you might want to take some hair gel)
