Godz I'll preface by saying this is a great beat...**** gets your head nodding instantly. Premier is the GOAT in my opinion. Him and Dilla. But...

Luchini
I Used to Love H.E.R.
Electric Relaxation
Find a Way
So Far to Go
Accordion
Korrupt World
Reality Check
Coolie High
Ho Happy Jackie
City of Godz(!!!)
Tried By Twelve
Concerto of the Desperado

...all are pretty amazing beats.

Premo is nice I wouldn't consider him the goat. A lot of his beats are dope but they are not that elaborate. Hell I couldn't make them but still it's usually the same loop through the entire song.

Mass Appeal was going to be my first choice of a better one. Nice.

I think this is a better Premo beat. One of my favorites...
Gang Starr - Work [Instrumental]

Doubt that.

Who cares if they aren't elaborate...? If they sound great and are consistently HQ then that's what matters. Sometimes simplicity is the best thing.

Who would you consider the GOAT?

I was always partial to "P is Still Free" by KRS-1. Primo did that beat. And, I like "Rock Stars" by Non Phixion. That beat was also done by Primo. I can't think of another producer who has made as many dope beats as him. El-P, RJD2, Large Professor, and some others all make dope beats, but Primo has been doing it consistently for a long time.

His beats are good. But you look at other producers and they do so much more that makes the song even better. Look at what Kanye does. His **** most of the time is top notch from the start to finish. He does more than just chop stuff up. Most Premo beats have the same formula. I'm not questioning that he's an all time great I'm just stating an observation.

To answer I look at Dre as the goat. He brought the whole g-funk era in. And most of the stuff that he's behind is fire in my opinion.

I'd put Dre in there. I love DJ Quik's earlier stuff. Kanye has always brought heat and so has Just Blaze. There are plenty of other great producers. It's not like I'm hating you shouldn't take offense.

I wrote out a whole long response and then deleted it all, figured it was a waste of time because this **** it all based on personal taste.

Think about it this way, Premier is the signature of the East Coast sound and is widely regarded as the best producer the East Coast has seen. He has produced some of the best (if not the single best) tracks for the of the very best rappers in the history of the genre. Rakim, Nas, Biggie, AZ, Jay-Z, Common, Snoop etc etc. That's a testament to the level of quality he brings to the table.

Kanye and Just Blaze aren't on the level of Preem or Dre. Those guys are a step below the best throughout the genre. Dilla, Premier, Dre, Pete Rock, RZA...those dudes are on a different planet.

Your right it's all about taste. You think Preem the best maybe because you feel the east coast sound a lot more. But I'm from Cali I like gangsta **** and the production that comes along with it.

I disagree with you about Kanye. He's produced a lot of hit records and is behind some of the best albums in this era. He oversaw most of the last two Common albums. He basically had a major hand in making Blueprint one of the best albums in the decade. And he has worked with others from different genres and has made it hot. Add on his 3 albums are all well produced.

And he shows his versatility. All 3 of his albums he brought a different twist. He made a techno track thump in his latest album. What makes him one of the best to do it is that he's not scared to try new things. A lot of producers are very redundant.

Dre is on par with Primo, but none of the other guys have had longevity like Primo has. He hasn't fallen off at all. And, I wasn't taking offense.

Another great producer who doesn't get much love is Sir Jinx. Rick Rubin has been doing it forever as well, and always put out dope ****.

Two separate questions for you:

1. Who are your top-10 M.C.'s of all time?

2. Who are your top-10 rap groups of all time?

It's hard for me to do top tens becuase I might be a fan of a rapper who is not highly as ranked.

But all time MC's for me would be something like this
Nas
Pac
Ice Cube
Redman
Biggie
Jay-Z
Rakim
Common
The rest are up for debate.

Groups
NWA
Outkast
Gangstarr
EPMD
Wu-Tang
The rest are up for debate.

Nas Is Like - I can't think of any beat better then this. Premo is the greatest hands down.

One Love - Q-Tip to perfection.

Platinum Plus - Another Premo gem.

I rate all of these better then Mass Appeal. But hey, that's just my opinion.

Nothing wrong with your selections, but they're pretty standard. If I get bored enough this morning, I'll post mine. LOL
