i'm gonna cross train in two martial arts (not interested in MMA just want to learn the arts) with one of them being Brazilian Jui Jit Su, and since I know your a Blue Belt I was wondering if you can give me some advice or a heads up.

The teacher of the school is a BJJ Black belt trained by Royler Gracie and his creditials look pretty good. Looking at the class tho I see they really just grapple all the time.

How did your first classes go? Do they just throw you right into grappling(i'm sure they don't) should I start lifting more weights do to the grappling (I lift but not heavy) any advice would be nice from you or anyone who takes the sport

First days vary. My first instructor did just kind of throw me in. We did a warm-up, practiced a few techniques, and then rolled. The experienced guys knew I was new so they mostly gave me pointers while we rolled, they did not just embarrass me. I did get tapped out alot though.

My current instructor does it different. Everyone does the warmup, then he shows techniques, but only to the older guys. He takes the first timers and works some basics with them, mostly mount escapes and the basic postitions of Jiu-Jitsu. He usually waits to let them roll for 1-3 classes depending on how quickly they pick it up.

One thing I would recommend is cardio. As a new guy your gonna not know how to breathe and you will be on bottom alot. Those two things kill your endurance. Weight training is ok, but at first you will notice that smaller guys will be able to beat you. But once you get better, you will use your strength alot better.

It usually takes about 6 months to really feel your getting good. But thats on average. I've seen two get their Blue Belts in 6 months. Those 2 guys are slick.

Good luck, I really think you'll enjoy it.

Good idea. Try and breathe too. Alot of new guys tend to hold their breath when they get in trouble. I did.
