OK Done a bit of research.. So the only difference is that in freestyle you can grab below the waist (Do trips and grab their legs) but in Greco your not allowd to grab legs (Can u still trip them though?)

I've wrestled freestyle since I was 6. Rampage Wrestles freestyle. The Best Wrestler in the UFC is either GSP or Josh Koscheck...

I disagree. Sure GSP has made tremendous strides and garnered a lot of attention for his wrestling, but with all the great wrestling talent in MMA I don't think GSP can be considered the best wrestler in the UFC. Among fighters currently active in the UFC, I'd probably give the nod to Dan Henderson. Lindland, Couture, Coleman, and Randleman are some others, though none are currently active in the UFC (Coleman is, sort of).

Wrestling is more than just take downs and take down defense, which is why I don't think GSP measures up at all.

The Nogueira brothers train with the Cuban olympic boxing team. Does that make them the best boxers in MMA?

Does the Cuban boxing team want them on the their team in the olympics? And yeah, they got pretty decent hands...

Yeah I don't know where I was going with the Nog boxing example as they are two of the best. ****, GSP is damn good but the other guys I mentioned are better imo.

Yes, the objectives are different. Greco-Roman is like Sumo wrestling. The object is to score points by getting your opponent to the ground or getting him over your head. In freestyle, the object is to pin your opponent or outscoring him with takedowns, reversals or escapes.

You also have Catch As Catch Can Wrestling AKA Submission wrestling. The objective to Catch is the same Freestyle, but you also can win with locks and chokes.

Sorry for hijacking the thread before.

Basically, in grecco your not allowed to really touch or trip the legs with your hands, legs, or otherwise so in grecco all take downs are upper body, even when the shoot they're shooting for the midsection above the hips.

Royal, are you confusing freestyle with American folkstyle (i.e. the style in high schools, colleges, etc.)? In freestyle the mat work mostly consists of the bottom man laying belly down and the top man trying to role him, which is actually basically the same as grecco. If you try to stand up or reverse your opponent in freestyle (or grecco) you are liable to be belly-to-back suplexed, a move illegal in Folkstyle. Also, throws are actually fairly common in freestyle because you can score a lot of points with a good throw (takedown + exposure points), or you may expose their shoulders which results in an automatic pin (not in Folkstyle).

In terms of MMA, I would say that freestyle guys tend to be more versatile because of their leg takedowns, but grecco guys are always very powerful in the upperbody which enables them to be very dominant in the clinch. It is important to note that virtually all American wrestlers-freestyle or grecco-tend to first come from a folkstyle background (as this is the predominant style in the US), so they are already well schooled in leg takedowns, escapes, etc.

Among the wrestlers in MMA Randy Couture (Olympic alternate), Dan Henderson (2x Olympian), and Matt Lindland (silver medalist) were all top grecco roman guys; Mark Coleman (Olympian) and Kevin Jackson (gold medalist) are both freestylests; and Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes, Kevin Randelman, Brock Lesnar, and Mark Kerr (along with every prior name I listed) are all among the many colegiant (e.g. folkstyle) wrestling standouts currently competing in MMA.

Another option you have is to find an MMA gym where some wrestlers train and have them teach you the basics. Wrestling is ofcourse a full sport in itself, but you don't necessarily need to know all of the aspects in order to apply it to MMA, if thats your goal.
