View Full Version : VIDEO TUTORIAL: The Shoulder Roll

This is a short video I made on the basics of the shoulder roll and how to use it.

The basics:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fr9LQOx7DsY&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fr9LQOx7DsY&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Putting it all together:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3XMPXFdZzrA&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3XMPXFdZzrA&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

The shoulder roll properly implemented:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4dCFfR2Fwzk&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4dCFfR2Fwzk&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

The only punch in the round to connect was the left hook at 2:23. However, I had my chin properly braced, and it turned an otherwise flush connect into a glancing blow.

If anyone shows any interest, I will make a much more comprehensive series of videos in the gym chronicling the forgotten nuances of defensive boxing.

I am not entirely sure, but I have a nagging suspicion that I might be a robot.

Can you only use it if your stance is with the left hand low?
What do ya do with a jab?
What can ya do about a left uppercut?

Good vid mate.

No, It can be done with hands high. It can be done from the Winky Wall. I prefer the left hand low for the increased visibility it affords me. If you are comfortable with your hands high, all of these defensive techniques will still work.

There are four options with the jab. You can catch it, you can parry it, you can slip it, or you can roll left and block it.

Left uppercuts are not a problem. There are several ways to deal with them. It depends on what position you are in. I personally have never been hit with an uppercut. They are the easiest punch to see, and the easiest to avoid.

You can roll an uppercut blocking with your elbow. You can catch an uppercut. You can slip an uppercut, mostly, if you are in a tight shell, you will not have a problem with it.

Thanks. I am gonna experiment with that style in sparring. I can't see **** coming with hands up. Which means I can't counter.

Thanks. I meant in the philly shell style. I noticed ya trainer was just throwing left hooks and right hands. How would in that style you get away from the jab? Or can ya still parry etc. with the left hand. Wait, I guess ya can lol.

Yeah, that seems the punch that I will mostly struggle with in the philly shell as it go through and up th body as there is high gaurd in place.

Thanks mate.

I am not sure what you mean. He threw a lot more jabs than hooks. The jab is caught with the right glove. While it is possible to parry a jab with the left hand, its rather impractical in most situations.

As for anyone having trouble dealing with uppercuts, no-matter your defensive style, keep in mind that keeping your chin down, and looking down are not the same thing. Chin tucked is good, head down is not.

Those were not pads, all the punching I did was my trainer trying to create openings in my defense. That is neither here nor there, I included the video so that you could see how I use the techniques I laid out in the instructions.

You can see the progression of techniques from the shoulder parry to the Toney roll to rolling under.

Even Floyd Mayweather had to learn....

How about you guys stop hating on !! Shawn? If you can already do a shoulder roll, dont watch the vids. If you wanna learn watch them and ask what you wanna know. Whats the point of hating on a guy for trying to help you out?

If you do make any more of these vids !! Shawn I, for one, would be grateful :fing02:

And I guess your defence is your chin huh?

The maturity level here is quite sad. I am not here seeking approval, or demanding people recognize me as gods gift to boxing. I am simply here to share my experience, and help people develop as fighters.

For some reason, people find it necessary to talk trash, tell me I am crap, tell me they will kick my ass... all sorts of things. They get offended when I am not interested in their criticism...

Thats fine with me... My ego is not bruised. Everyone is different, some people need a good ass-whooping to learn, some people listen and absorb all the information they can because they realize there is always more to learn.

I am here to help the latter. The people that are truly interested in learning about the sweet science, and improving their skills. The kind of person that realizes that no matter how good you are, there is always more to learn, and improvements to be made.

I also find it amusing how people criticize my "ego". There is no such thing as a fighter without an "ego". If you didn't believe in yourself and your abilities, you would NEVER step through those ropes.

While I disagree with Punch Drunk on some things, I respect him, because he is not closed minded like many of the people attempting to insult me. He has an "ego" just like every other fighter or ex-fighter, but he realizes that there is always room for improvement.

to whoever wants to take me up:
i would like a video on how to avoid getting crowded by punches by someone with faster hands then you. i mean properly covering up and getting out of sticky situations if you know what i mean. im fine boxing on the outside, keeping my jab going. but as soon as someone penetrates my jab and gets really close, i get bullied backwards quickly.

btw i liked the pads work where you implamented it. ill never keep my left down like you but it gives me ideas for movement. i often find myself tense up with my feet when im in trouble and dont move away from danger enough. i just try and block it.

I am not sure what you are talking about. I'll make a video dealing with getting out of corners and turning your opponents, and spinning out. I'll make another video dealing with using defense to control the center of the ring.
