I live in Melbourne and love both AFL & League.
Last week I watched the Storm play South Sydney in Gosford and the official attendance was 8,000 fans.
The NRL must be losing money hand over fist with attendances like that. I know 8,000 isn't the norm but they just don't get enough bums on seats to prosper IMHO. They must be living off television rights money and that is a dangerous situation to be in. If channel nine decide the ratings aren't worth the dollars in the future the code would be in big trouble.
I hope the powers that be in the NRL have some sort of plan to grow the game because the AFL are expanding into the Gold coast & putting a second team in Sydney. That may hurt League even more. Both are fantastic games for very different reasons and I hope they continue to coexist.

The real reason why AFL is more attended is because it is more exciting to watch at the ground than NRL. I love when the crowd scream ‘Balllllll”. Atmosphere is ten times better than NRL. AFL can still expand to NT and Tasmania. NRL wouldn’t take off in SA and never really will in Melbourne.

Have you been to a Storm game mate?
Crowd involvement is excellent down at Olympic park.
They don't have 80,000 fans like Collingwood do in the AFL, but it has it's own unique atmosphere and me and the missus love it. Still love our AFL of course, but as I said both games are terrific for different reasons.
I just watched the Crows v Bombers game on free to air then switched over to Fox for replays of the Broncos v Eels and now watching the replay from the Raiders v Manly. Best of both worlds and if people can put away bias from one code to another then we have a glut of fantastic sport all weekend every weekend. Can't ask for more than that.

Heard I have heard Melbourne Storm fans tried to start fans to chant. Chanting only works really in Football(soccer). I have been to a rugby league match. New Zealand Vs Australia at Telstra dome great match. The problem was large parts if the game was dull and completer silence. NRL should start worry about the AFL invasion. Local AFL clubs are based our local communities , that why the games continues to grow and get new folks to follow it.

im from brissy cant say ive ever watched a full game of afl in my life, dont really follow league either but i know afl isnt really watched up here, the highlights are ok but i cant stand there grabbing and pushing its just rediculous. rugby is more easy on the eye than afl, but id have to agree that you cant see what is going on all around the park on tv for the afl, but rugby is ok cause the action is where the ball is.

that's a big call to make!

hayne, inu.. good players.. finch grothe.. over rated

id say melbourne (inglis, folau, slater, cooper-cronk, turner etc)
brisbane (lockyer, hodges, hunt, boyd, wallace)
and even st george (gaznier, cooper, hornby, morris)

would have better backlines..

Cool. And it's just like how the Broncos relied on Lockyer. Anyway the Titans need Prince for his kicking skills and his creativeness. Preston Campbell he was great during that match stepping and dodging the players. And I think he played with a fractured jaw in the second half because he knew how important the match was.

Yeah, Campbell played tremendously. I don't think the Broncos need Lockyer anywhere near as much now as they used to. He has missed half the season this year and been fairly ordinary when he has played for the most part and they have still managed to get to 5th.

Good post as always from woftam.

You're right, they're living of TV rights, that's why the clubs/nrl aren't as alarmed with attendance as they should be. They don't really seem to be making any effort to get people back to the grounds. The head of the NRL is a complete tool.

Like you said, if channel 9 pulls the plug, they'd be ****ed. Things like Monday night football isn't a success in Sydney and is played at a **** time of 7pm, I've only been to one game and had to bust my ass getting off work early, driving home and picking up my kid and then driving out to Stadium Australia in peak hour.

Never again have I gone to a Monday night game, especially when you've got a Foxtel subscription.

I don't believe FOX SPORTS can prop the league up on it's own, either. I actually watched a one hour documentary on the History channel the other week and to be honest the league has never fully recovered from the Super League/Murdoch sager from the mid 90's IMO. I was pretty young at the time when all of that went down and wasn't paying much attention to it, but it really tore the league apart. Murdoch tried to turn what was essentially a Sydney competition with the exception of a few clubs into a national Super league. It makes me laugh, the idea of a perth team now that I think about it.

The only reason I still watch it is because it's in my blood, as a kid I spent every second sunday afternoon on the hill at Leichhardt oval watching guys like Blocker Roach, Garry Jack and the rest of the classic Tigers play.

But with all the video ref bull****, it's hard to attract new fans, because nothing is clear cut any more.

You mean the Warriors?

And I'm just shocked, really shocked for the Broncos to lose it at the last minute. How would you feel? To have it in the bag and then to lose it right at the end. What a terrible way to send off Carrol and Wayne. And the Broncos lose quite a lot of good players this year Kemp, Boyd, Hannat, Ennis and Moon I think. But they do get Falou next year.

It's not a matter of if I think it or not, it's just fact. I'm not putting **** on the game, I love love it, but the league need to do something. Players going to overseas isn't really the problem, only a certain amount of players can go, they can't afford to buy everyone.

Yeah, Locky's disappointment was what typified the night for me. He was just so devestated, I don't think I have ever seen him like that. Part of me hates Sims for dropping the ball but I also felt sorry for him. He was completely devestated afterwards, you could see the pain.

I still think the future looks good for us. We still have a solid core. We picked up a great signing in Folau for next season and two good signings in Setu and Gorrell. There are also a couple of really promising young guys coming through from the 20s - Ben Hunt, Yow Yeh and Hoffman look particularly good. I give us a good chance at another premiership in the next 2 or 3 years. Still a devestating loss though, I really thought that if we won that one we would have gone on to win it. Going for anyone but the Storm now though, I really dislike that team.

See I'm pretty pessimistic. I haven't followed the u20s that closely but current first grade squad is going to disband. Ennis and Hannant particularly are big losses. Moon I don't mind losing, never been impressed. Lockyer is only going to spend more time injured in the next few years. How long will there be room for Folau, Hunt, Hodges and Lockyer under the salary cap? All backs i might add. I can't be the only one who thinks Clinton and Kenny, though solid, aren't really the engine that could lead a team to premiership glory. Especially with PJ Marsh most likely packing down between them. Sigh. This was the year to do it I'm afraid.

Especially with PJ Marsh most likely packing down between them. Sigh. This was the year to do it I'm afraid.

I don't see Hannant and Ennis as particularly big losses to be honest. I think Ennis was good in patches but very inconsistent and Hannat has not had a good season, nothing like last year. Kemp was an unfortunate loss but the Warriors paid 230k for him and I think any more would have been overs. Moon has never really reached the heights that warrant his perceived value so he is a loss but a necessary one. Lockyer has one year left, the injury has taken a lot out of him and expect Ben Hunt to step up in 2010 and become the first choice 5/8. Consider our backline for next season -

Wallace
Lockyer
Michaels Folau Hodges Yow Yeh/Manihera

Hunt

Forwards wise I think we look good - plenty there is Clinton, Kenny, Eastwood, Taylor, Parker, Stagg, Setu, Teo. Hookers we have PJ, McCullogh and Gorrell. I think things look ok, it will all be injury-dependent obviously but it always is.

Hmm I forgot about Taylor who is sure to become a force. Eastwood is going to the UK though and he's got some great potential. Parker and Kenny are good club men to be sure. Stagg is a solid utility, but IMO his game doesn't fit with the modern form of league. I just feel after losing Eastwood and Carrol.. Thaiday is the only bloke in the pack that can play a dynamic style.

That is a damn solid backline on paper. I agree with you on Kemp, a good player, but far from irreplacable. Michaels or even Robinson will be fine on the wing. I thought Ennis was starting to come good and will gain consistency with age.

I'm liking hearing your thoughts, mate. Here's a question.. If Ben Hunt is our future 5/8.. where does Karmichael end up if he stays at the club?

**** that's right I completely forgot about Greg going to Leeds. Thats is a bit of a loss. I still think we look ok in the forwards, and if history is anything to go by the Broncs have a history of coming up with great young forwards.

Don't underestimate our 20s either. They took a while to get going and were not even in the 8 after a couple of months, however they stormed back to finish 2nd and are in the prelim final. Also, Ben Hunt won the award for best player in the comp, so there is definately some talent there.

I really hope Karmichael stays at the club. There is always the talk of him playing 5/8 in the future but I just don't see it as his most effective position. I see his best positions being full back and lock, in that order. However, things could change in the future and they could swap around. Whatever the scenario I definately see Ben Hunt as being groomed as the 5/8 for when Darren finishes up. A lot depends on Hoffman I think. If he comes through and looks the goods as a top line fullback K might shift to lock.

I think he'd make a great ball playing lock, he may even have another bit of growth left in him. I've heard a lot of good things about Ben Hunt without being blown away the few times I got to Suncorp early enough to watch the 20s go round. You seem to really know your stuff so I'll take your word.

You're right about one thing though.. the Broncos certainly produce some talent. To think Barnes, Seymour and even Moon have all failed to cement a spot in the halves in recent years.. our stocks must be decent.

It's a pity they let Eastwood go to get his pay day in the UK.. might have been a time for the club to play hard ball to get the last year on his contract out of him.

I tell you what though.. I'd gladly give big Petero the 450k he wanted to have him back.

I know how you Bronco's fans felt because that was me the week before when we had the Warriors beaten, but managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with 1 minute remaining. Stunned, bewildered.

Storm have a shot at going back to back, but I think if they don't pull it off then we wont be in a position to win another one for a few years. I think we will be doing that without Cam Smith as well.

We will lose Israel Folau, Jeremy Smith, Mick Crocker, Matt Geyer, & Antonio Kaufusi next season. That's gonna hurt.

As much as it pains me to say, I think Manly are in the box seat this year.

Oh - the thing that pissed me off the most about losing to the warriors was me and the missus were going to go to the prelim at Telstra dome.

Ashton Sims should be ****ing shot.

Well you can't really blame him. He got tackled and the ball came out. Wasn't like he made a simple mistake.

I'm going for the Storm now. Although rightly the Broncos should be in the semi finals. What about that try to Inglis that was disallowed just because he was slightly offside.

1 thing thats different between 20s and NRL is the contact is a mile in difference, iv seen SG ball games wit harder contact than alot of 20s games. This is why it is goin to b hard for alot of players to make the leap. Ben Hunt is good but i dunt feel he is good enough just yet to be tossed into a team and expected to b one of the best, they should start tryin to ease him into the team over the next couple of years

Dave Taylor has nothin lol cept for ****in size

Cheers Woftam. This is definitely a legacy year for the Storm. The damn salary cap makes it so hard for a team to stay on top.. shown clearly by the players the storm are losing next year. They've got to do it this year.

I'll be happy enough if they do. Dallas Johnson is a local lad and there are plenty of other good Queenslanders I'm happy to cheer for.

Lol dropping the ball isn't a simple mistake? It was a good hit, but at that time of the game ball security should have been his primary concern. Not to worry.. the Broncs should have been in a better position after playing a man up for 10 minutes. Slightly offside is offside.. Broncos went close a few times too.. we had a refs call go against us.. which i never understand with the benefit of the doubt rule.. and that tackle by billy slater on hannant has to be the tackle of the year.

I read somewhere that Taylor is also the fourth fastest over 40 yards at the Broncos.. size and speed makes for a good front rower in my book. also runs pretty decent lines.

Thing is mate if your grading him against the aussie full backs then the is atleast 2 better than him. But you could say that about the whole aussie squad compared to the England team. The is only about 3 or 4 players from England who I reckon could make the Aussie squad if they was australian.

It is becoming a little bit of a problem.

Am I the only one who thinks all this bull**** about alcohol bans is ridiculous though? I mean, its not like these guys are on massive bucks. The cap means that the average salary in the NRL is pitiful compared to other professional sports. I certainly don't think it justifies imposing ridiculous lifestyle ristrictions on the the players. I mean, we are struggling to keep the current talent pool enough as it is.

Really looking forward to the season though. Should be a great game tonight at Suncorp, I am pumped.

There isn't the interest in other areas to create more NRL sides, people talk of needing sides in Adelaide and Perth but I feel that a side in Adelaide would go belly up within three years if it were un able to make the finals. As for Perth it remains to be seen, two AFL sides and now a super 14 side is quite a lot of competition. My idea for the Sydney sides would be to merge Penrith and Parramatta or something similar, with a Central Coast side being the most likely area to get the next team.

We need less teams IMO. Less teams and more outside of Sydney. I don't think expansion outside of the traditional league areas would work, but we could definately have another team in South East QLD for instance.

I agree an Adelaide Team would sink pretty quickly and a Perth team would follow pretty quickly.
