View Full Version : Toney Undisputed Heavyweight Champ
INFAMOUZ 10-29-2004, 10:12 PM Here's Another Thought For Everybody. I Watched James Toney In His Last Fight And He Really Impressed Me. I Think If He Dropped About 10 Pounds Or So He Should Give Tarver A Run At The Belt. I Have To Admit, I Only Saw Tarver Fight In The Two Jones Fights, And He Didn't Really Impress Me. Yeah He Knocked Out Jones, But After Watching Glen Johnson, That's Not Really An Accomplishment Anymore. I Like Toney, I Think He Would Have A Little Trouble With Vitali's Reach, But You Never Know. If That Punk Danny Williams Pulls Out A Miracle On Dec.11th I Think Toney Could Put Williams Out. I Also Heard Toney Say He'd Fight Iron Mike, But I Don't Think That Will Fair Too Good For Him. If The Cards Are Played Right, Toney Will Be The Next Undisputed Heavyweight Champion!!
phallus 10-29-2004, 11:17 PM He could be, but no one will give him a shot
The Fix 10-29-2004, 11:21 PM toney is talented and has a solid chin so him beating vitali isnt out of the question.toney beats all the small heavys IMO

"If The Cards Are Played Right, Toney Will Be The Next Undisputed Heavyweight Champion!!"
Yikes. There's nobody out there who will play with that deck. Toney has some skills and he hits hard, and has some chin. But he's slowed down and hasn't really been tested, or maybe you think he has. Keep in mind that a guy like Vitali WILL hit James Toney on the chin a couple times, and will probably take a couple chin shots also. Lewis' uppercut was not just a slap when Vitali took it, more than once. Toney would have to work harded that he did with Jirov.
I just haven't seen Toney DO anything (since 1994 actually) to show he can be the Man. His showing against Jirov was crappy. Toney will probably be remembered as the man who got beat twice by Montell Griffin, and that's all she wrote. What's he done to deserve a shot? Beat-up on Green?
FistoftheDallasStar 10-30-2004, 12:14 AM Toney has the tools to give ole' Klitchko a run for his money. The heavyweight division is ripe for the taking and a hungry veteran like James could definately pull it off. This would be the biggest match up at heavyweight at this time. This would prove if Klitchko is a real champ or "filler" champ. Klitch knows this and will attempt to avoid Toney as long as possible.
ispayder 10-30-2004, 12:16 AM JT can't be the undisputed heavyweight champ yet, Vitali Klitchko will stand in his way.

Vitali is avoiding Toney? Tell Toney to stop fighting trash like Booker. He is wasting everyone's time.
Dr.Depravity 10-30-2004, 01:39 AM Toney cant beat Vitali.
WillieW 10-30-2004, 07:54 AM He could be, but no one will give him a shot
Unfortunately you hit the nail on the head. He can't get a fight with any of Don Kings stable of bums, because King always wants options. A fight with either Klit never seems to be able to be made. He is just kind of stuck.
He the stands to win against most of the current top ten, and he has a chance of upsetting the others. A fight with Vitali would be very interesting no matter who wins, but it will take alot to make it happen.
neils7147933 10-30-2004, 11:01 AM Anyone can look impressive against Rydell Booker.
Except if they can't get him out of there even though he's wobbly at Round 3 and their arms are so tight from overtraining that their corner has to massage them between rounds because their old body can't take the roids anymore.
Does Toney even have 4 fights in him, even if the 4 champs lined up and somehow got beat by the guy (I give him 1-3 against the champs right now, 0-4 if Rahman meets Meehan and takes Lamon's belt)
MetalVomit 10-30-2004, 11:02 AM Toney cant beat Vitali.
he can, but will he be able to? I think Vitali would either win a lopsided decision, or stop Toney. Toney beats Brewster, possibly Ruiz, i dont know if he could take byrd, but I would love to see them fight. He can beat Vitali, but he wouldnt.
BrooklynBomber 10-31-2004, 07:55 PM Dont think that he can become a champion. He proved to be injury prone and will only fight in 6 month at least, by that time he will be like 37 which is pretty much too old for JT.
But hey this is boxing and anything could happen. I could see him getting a UD over Brewster (Meehan did it, why not Toney) but with Don King around it will be hard to actually beat him. Lamon proved to have a concrete head and I dont see Toney even knocking him down. All the other kings champions are too much for Toney IMHO. I dont even talk about Vitaly. But again anything could happen in boxing. Toney is just a good fighter in wrong division at a wrong time ;)
GxBrak 11-01-2004, 12:29 AM toney wont be able to hurt klitschko, he just doenst have power at HW and vitali would eventually outlast him
oldgringo 11-01-2004, 04:11 AM Toney doesn't have power at HW? Tell that to Holyfield...and don't give me that "Holy is shot" **** because he's still a tough guy regardless of his diminished skills.
Toney has the stones to win the HW title. He could beat Vitali and I say that based on his experience, chin, superior defense, accurate punching...he wouldn't KO Vitali. It would be a late TKO or decision if anything.
The only thing I see him having trouble with is getting inside. Vitali won't wanna take it inside so he would likely sit outside and try to pot shot. I wonder how JT would deal with that.
Vitali most likely wouldn't come forward and rush Toney (maybe if he had a death wish) so Toney would have to keep his part of the action and come forward, which he proved he can do.
Toney looked crappy against Jirov? Jirov makes everything look bad...in what aspect did James look bad?

Holyfield is shot and on top of that after the Byrd fight he is in tremendous pain just trying to keep his left arm up let alone throw a punch with it.

So he's not tough anymore?
Neuraxis 11-01-2004, 01:39 PM So he's not tough anymore?
He tore his rotator cuff against Byrd like Vitali did, except Holyfield kept fighting with it unlike Vitali. And now unlike Vitali his shoulder still bothers him.
oldgringo 11-01-2004, 01:50 PM I'm not saying that Holy isn't shot and is not the same fighter or whatever. He is hurt and now has to smother the other fighter because he can't pick his left up to guard himself. I'm replying to someone saying that Toney has no HW power. He can certainly hurt you over the course of a fight. He hurt Evander (one of the toughest guys ever) over the course of their fight...and hurt Booker rather early on in their fight. I'm just saying that he does have enough power to hurt anyone after they eat so many shots.
WillieW 11-01-2004, 02:05 PM I think alot of you guys are missing a good point here. Everyone has an opinion, thats fine, but why just dismiss the idea that Toney should fight these guys? Toney is the one of the few guys in the HW division that can make things interesting. Who cares who wins, Toney against most of the top 10 HW's is more interesting than most of them fighting each other. Love him or hate him, Toney is the guy who can make some damn good fights right now.
PS Whoever said Rachman beats Toney............now way, the skill level is lopesided and Toney has a great chin.
I think there is a lot of hype about Toney. Lets not forget he is an aging middle weight who will soon be competing with some of the biggest heavyweights in history. People say that he has a great chin, at middleweight and lightheavy weight without a doubt this is true... but what happens when one of the big hitters lands one on him - I don't see how he will be able to take serious heavyweight damage.
On the plus side, I am looking forward to seeing him in against a big, heavy hitting, experienced fighter.... It will be a relief to finally have him shut up.

Wow, a newbie with some sense! We could use more of you
BoxingPromoter 11-04-2004, 10:22 AM Infamouz, I also saw James toney's last fight (Booker) and wasn't
impressed at all. After the early rounds when he should have knocked
booker out he stopped fighting and let him go the distance. Toney was
injured in that fight but he should have disposed of him early when he
had the chance.I think James toney is a great boxer with impressive
skills but I dont think he could stand up to stronger heavyweights like
the Klitschos or a Danny Williams.
oldgringo 11-04-2004, 10:46 AM I hope he gets (stays) healthy so he can come back and show that he can bang with these big ****ers. It'll be hard for these big heavies to hurt something that they are rarely hitting flush or at all. I'm interested to see how he would do against a McCline or Williams or Klit. Of course I have taken my stance on this and I definitely think Toney can win a title in the no so distant future.
jack_the_rippuh 11-04-2004, 12:59 PM Over Tyson's dead body..
jabsRstiff 11-04-2004, 01:03 PM Over Tyson's dead body..
Tyson would quit before he'd die in there.
jack_the_rippuh 11-04-2004, 01:53 PM Kid, what do you have against Tyson?
jabsRstiff 11-04-2004, 02:13 PM Kid, what do you have against Tyson?
He's an overrated frontrunner, with the biggest excuse-making, delusional fans in the history of sports.
I'm no kid, kid...unlike you. I followed Tyson from his amateur days, & for the longest time, couldn't get enough of him.
But, man....I got sick of hearing how invincible he was....& when he did get his ass handed to him (by Douglas) the guy sat around & allowed his promoter try & take the win away from the man who DESTROYED him.
He eventually proved to be a fighter who's a BAD ASS only when he's kicking ass.
Once things weren't 100% his way, he'd stop fighting as hard.
Yet....here are guys like you, still sampling the overrated sack.
isnt toney injured, til middle of next year, at which point he'll be what?? 36?? 37??
jack_the_rippuh 11-04-2004, 03:33 PM Nah, I think you envy Tyson. Stop your crying already..
