MMAWeekly.com has confirmed that Heath Herring has agreed to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 87 on Aug. 9 when the Ultimate Fighting Championship makes its debut in Minneapolis, Minn.

Lesnar was originally slated to face UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman in the main event of UFC 87. Coleman, however, suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in training, which will sideline him for at least six weeks. He was forced to withdraw from the bout with Lesnar due to the injury.

Herring has been on a roller coaster ride since his UFC debut in January of 2007. The former Pride heavyweight title contender has gone 2-2 in the Octagon, most recently defeating Cheick Kongo at UFC 82 in Columbus, Ohio.

Lesnar had a less than stellar Octagon debut, losing to former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir via kneebar at UFC 81 in Las Vegas earlier this year.

With the withdrawal of Coleman, the UFC acted swiftly, signing a new main event bout with welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, fresh off winning the title at UFC 82, making the first defense of his second reign as champion when he faces No. 1 contender Jon Fitch.

Roger Huerta and Kenny Florian will also square off at UFC 87. The bout, according to the promotionís president, Dana White, will likely decide the next contender to the UFC lightweight title being contested on Saturday night at UFC 84 between current champion B.J. Penn and former champion Sean Sherk.

I actually think Herring will take it. Brock will keep taking him down and Herring will go for repeated sweeps and failed sub attempts. It will look like either Jake O' Brien vs Herring with Herring losing or Herring vs Kongo with Herring winning a close one.

Also, Herring is a former wrestler and has the WORST TD defense. Why is that?

This might be better than the Coleman matchup. I think Brock takes it though.

Well Brock is staying true to his word, he'll fight anyone.
Unlike Kevin Ferguson, who is being fed a steady diet of
washed up fighters.

One is being groomed to be the next Big Thing,
the other is being fed to the lions.

Dana is trying to kill the whole "how would a pro wrestler do in MMA" speculation and is apparently content with only getting 2 big PPV numbers out of it.

Why are they putting Lesnar against name fighters with all of this experience? It's the extreme opposite of what Pro Elite is doing with Kimbo.

Why is there no middle ground? I'm thinking maybe Dana doesn't want Brock there - or Lashley or Angle or OHaire or Kimbo or any other "outsider" that wants to give it a go - so he schedules these fights... and then if Brock wins, he's got another huge PPV out of it, but if he loses the sport seems a little more difficult to master to the average fan, thus increasing (in Dana's mind) the legitimacy and reputation of the organization?

Just a question - how many other fighters have you seen get opponents as good as Brock's in fights #2 and #3 of his pro career? All of his wrestling experience is amateur.

Brock may be earning his pay but if he drops another fight to Herring, his novelty is over before he had a chance to develop with TUF-caliber tune-ups, no?

I'm not necessarily a fan of how Kimbo is being moved along. I was bringing him up as a contrast - I think both "plans" are perhaps inappropriate for new pros...
