View Full Version : The best chins of all time.
INFAMOUZ 10-29-2004, 05:09 PM In no particular order. Heres my ten
1) Muhammad Ali: When he rope-a-doped his way in the seventies he took wicked shots from Foreman, Frazier, Norton,Shavers and countless other murderous hitters....and he only had 3 knockdowns scored against him in his entire career.
2) Julio Cesar Chavez: In his prime did u ever see him hurt or staggered? even after taking shots from bombers like Rosario and Mayweather? No
3) Evander Holyfield: Any fool who stands and trade shots with Mike Tyson and doesnt fold has got to have tough whiskers...Holyfield does. He also took the best that Bowe, Foreman, Lewis,Moorer.
4) Tex Cobb: how many brain cells did he lose when he just let Shavers tee off on his noggin, and yet never once took a step back.
5) Marvalous Marvin Hagler. Soaked up Hearns best shots and just kept coming....Took Mugabi's best and did the same...Hagler did this all through his career...took his opponents best shots and just smiled.
6) Sugar Ray Robinson: He fought over 200 fights and the only stoppage he suffered was by heat exhaustion to Joey Maxim. Fullmer, Tiger Jones and many other true Middleweights tested this blown up Welterweight's Jaw...Sugar Ray passed them all.
7) George Foreman: He should have went to sleep when Lyle was nailing him with wicked shots..he didn't. He should have been kayoed when Alex Stewart sliced up his face and busted his jaw he didnt... a prime Holyfield teed of on his noggin all night and he didnt even so much flinch.
8)Jake Lamotta: This nut went through his career and was only floored once...by a light heavyweight when he was way passed his prime..Robinson smashed him with everything for the middleweight title and he was still on his feet.
9)Ray Mercer. In his prime u could have taken a baseball bat and hit Mercer over the head and he still be standing. He took Morrison's best hooks and kept coming, Lewis hit him with right hands all night and he gave Lennox one of his toughest fights, and only went down on points slightly.
10) Kid Gavillan: He fought over 100 fights and was floored a total of 1. He traded shots with an absolute prime Sugar Ray and never took a step backward....he fought guys that outweigh him by 20lbs but never once knocked out....freak of nature.

very, very nice........
Mr. Ryan 10-29-2004, 05:19 PM Oliver McCall, former WBC Heavyweight Champ, should be up there as well.
SweetScience 10-29-2004, 05:22 PM I would have JCC at 1 because he's knockdowns were flash knockdowns...even when Tszyu dropped an old washed up JCC...Chavez got up right away. To top it off a fighter like JCC who would move forward always is prone to walking in on something and getting knockdown. JCC would walk threw punches all the time just to get his punches in. For instance in Chavez first fight with Mayweather he got caught with a hard right hand that buckled Chavez's legs. That pissed off Chavez and Chavez eventually KO'd Mayweather.
*Honorably mentions - Ricardo Mayorga has a set of good whiskers and also David Tua.
George Chuvalo deserves a spot.

But he's been stopped on a number of occasions. Even while not going down, he's been seriously hurt in bouts. I also question his heart in giving up against De La Hoya. I think he's a product of marketing and other people's ideas. He never was invincible.
m00ks 10-29-2004, 06:21 PM How about Yori boy Campas?
I like the fact that someone put Oliver McCall in there, the guy has one of the most underated chins around.
The guy that should make any list is Jorge Castro, this guy would take king kong the distance, no one has ever ko'd him or hurt him that I know of and know one ever will, He took Roy the distance when Roy was winning every fight by ko, he let Jirov beat on him and didn't blink, the guy is a rock! And as for his chin, its a lot more sturdy than a rock!

Your stoned!
The Fix 10-29-2004, 09:30 PM real deal has a great chin. he took all the big heavyweight punches of his time and came back for more. but what about ward and gatti. they should be mentioned just because of thier trilogy. those two went toe to toe for 12 rounds on three occasions
tikal 10-29-2004, 09:32 PM I'm surprised nobody listed Lennox Lewis and Roy Jones!! How could you leave them out of the list they have granite like chins.

People don't mention McCall because he's not that popular.McCall is probably tougher than Mercer even.
Hurlex 10-29-2004, 11:06 PM L.Lewis..hell no!!! he was ko'ed by two fighter that even shot tyson would have taken shots from and ko'ed...i mean if ur gonna say lewis..tyson should be on there lol..u have to weaken tyson chin first atleast..good list
i do think lamotta should be higher though...that man was amazing..and ali had a good chin but i dont think he was number one..when he was dropped by frazier it was a flash KD..anyway all the others are great...what about marciano..i know he wasnt ever truly tested to some people but he was never ko'ed
SweetScience 10-29-2004, 11:07 PM But he's been stopped on a number of occasions. Even while not going down, he's been seriously hurt in bouts. I also question his heart in giving up against De La Hoya. I think he's a product of marketing and other people's ideas. He never was invincible.
If you had a brain you would know no one's invincible. Everyone loses..at least the best do.
Anyways, this thread was based on best chin's of all time, and you turn this into something else....try to keep to the topic next time.
Kimmy 10-29-2004, 11:11 PM Oliver McCall greatest heavyweight chin ever, respect to british fighters Wayne McCullough and Chris Eubank
Neuraxis 10-29-2004, 11:11 PM McCall and Mercer.
phallus 10-29-2004, 11:29 PM Sonny Liston had a great chin
Boxerdog 10-29-2004, 11:33 PM George Chuvalo deserves a spot.
Absolutely.......I have seen this question posed many times and my big three are always Chavalo, Randall Cobb and Ali.
FistoftheDallasStar 10-30-2004, 12:44 AM Good list. I would also add Rocky Marciano to the list, he took some massive shots in his bouts. And other than his fight with "the hitman" Duran's chin is also pretty solid. As for a current fighter James Toney comes to mind after absorbing punishing shots from Jirov and an "older" but still hard punching Holyfield.
ferociouso 10-30-2004, 04:51 AM 1/ john mugabi
2/marvin hagler

7/ali
8/henry cooper
9/holyfield
10/ micky ward
Great 10-30-2004, 04:59 AM Jake LaMotta had best chin. His fights with Robinson... It`s amazing, how he hasn`t fallen. Great chin.
What about Marciano you all seem too forget him.
1:Ali.
2:Marciano.
3:Foreman.
4:Holyfield.
5:Mercer.
psychopath 10-30-2004, 08:16 AM Ali would be my ALL TIME GREATEST . . . but JCC would out ranked him on the my best chin list. Due to Ali's superb defense and fighting style his face and chin was never batered and tested as compared to JCC. ;)
Micky Ward had an impressive chin.
Of the current boxers, Carlos Hernandez showed he had an amazing chin when he kept walking through Erik Morales biggest shots.
nohero 10-30-2004, 11:34 AM George Chuvalo deserves a spot.
Chuvalo deserves the #1 spot... fought Ali twice and went the distance, also fought Frazier, Foreman and a few other heavy hitters.
Never went down, not even once, I think he fought nearly 100 fights too.
Marciano had an excellent chin as well, I think he only went down twice and got up immediately. I saw Walcott lay a beating on him and floor him with a terrific punch and Rocky stood right up and went right back at it... not wobbly or dazed at all. He also took a nasty elbow that split his nose in half (against Ezzard Charles I believe) and never went down, went on to win by KO because his corner was worried the fight would be stopped because he was bleeding so much so they warned him and he went out like a madman and ended it.
how the hell did all you simpletons manage to leave out the Pocket Rocket, Wayne McCollough.
in all the years that i've been into boxing, and watched tapes of old .... no one compares in my book to the MAN, McCollough.
markosg19 10-30-2004, 12:41 PM Frank Bruno!!!!!!! (sorry)

you right on point man
TysonForeman 10-30-2004, 02:55 PM Joe Grim, a mutant with an extra thick skull who lose every fight of his career but couldn't be knocked out.
dansweeney 10-30-2004, 05:03 PM the best all time beard has to be hagler, no one could stagger the guy, he had one official knockdown his whole career in the first round against roldan, hearns hit him with everything but the kitchen sink and couldnt drop him, mugabi was 25-0 with 25 kayos when they fought and he couldnt drop him, by far the best, also Hopkins is up there, when did you ever see him get hurt? never, i dont think he has ever been dropped
kevvy1979 10-30-2004, 06:22 PM Hagler,Mccall, and I loved watching Foreman takes them shots and keep on trucking ;)
realdeal75 10-30-2004, 06:32 PM I have the greatest chin!!! Of course!!!

Hopkins has been dropped a couple times

I agree Hagler should be among the top on that best chin list. The guy is simply like a solid concrete post that can never be shaken. ;)
oldgringo 10-31-2004, 03:01 PM Marvin Hagler.
WikipediaAntonio 06-02-2005, 01:11 AM All that you guys have mentioned are excellent picks but Im amazed no one, including myself in a similar thread I began, has mentioned these five:
Juan Laporte, stood up while taking shots from Fenech, from the GREATEST PUNCHER OF ALL TIME, NAMED Wilfredo Gomez (40-1-1-, 40 kos before their fight) from Julio Cesar Chavez, from Nelson, from Tszyu, from Zack Padilla, Rocky Lockridge, Barry McGuigan..he was only dropped once and stopped only when his corner threw the towel against Padilla otherwise he'd gone the distance too.
Marco Antonio Barrera: Pheeww! Three battles with Erik Morales and never went down. Has been down with Kennedy McKinney and with Pac Man and with Junior Jones, but the guy earns his stripes for the three fights with Morales as well as Jones II, Orlando Fernandez (who broke Julio Gervacio's jaw) and others. Which leads me to.....
Erik Morales. Once again pheeew! Has taken the best from everyone and has only been down twice, never knocked out.
Sixto Escobar, 63 fights and yes he lost 18 but Puerto Rico's first world champion was never stopped, never even put on trouble! All his losses were by guys who outboxed him and he outfought most of them the next time around.
Arturo Gatti: His fights with Micky Ward tell the story. Gabe Ruelas, Oscar De La Hoya dropped him once but he was on his feet (I think) when it was stopped in round five. One that put a dent to his reputation was Angel Manfredy through. FTR, I think he's way mismatched with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Ray Mancini Most of his stops were on cuts. Tough nosed fighter who never said no and was knocked out on the floor only by Alexis Arguello, and by light hitting Greg Haugen when Mancini was way past his prime.
And remember, most magazine writers tend to list the old timers and non minorities more than anyone else :) not trying to make this a racist issue, every race has awesome boxers and I love Americans, but, Ring and KO and all the other magazines often tend to rank Americans over everyone else :)

WikipediaAntonio 06-02-2005, 01:14 AM And let's not forget Vito Antuofermo
Tha Greatest 06-02-2005, 01:28 AM Lamotta, Hagler, Holyfield, Ali, Chavez, etc.
I don't care how many times they got knocked down they could take a punch...
Don't forget Miguel Cotto........JUST JOKING:D

I don't think you can argue too much with this list. I wonder if you could throw Tua, Mayorga, or gatti anywhere in here
