I had a 59-3 record as an amateur, a very long time ago. We had no headguards, and fought 3, sometimes 4, 2 minute rounds. Headliners were often 6-2 min rds or 4-3's. I was a league finalist, robbed by a guy I'd already easily beaten twice, the match postponed until summer (I thought I had been given a walkover) when I hadn't trained for 2 months. My own fault. Also was a university champion (at 2 weights at the same time). Fought as a juvenile on an international bill. Lost my second fight to a very experienced "ringer", having beaten his fancied club-mate in my 1st fight. Retired after 61 fights. Then "was dragged" back against my will to make up a club tournament attraction and lost. I recall staggering and gasping for breath in the 3rd. Had discovered girls and was only in training for them. Served me right, began at 15 finished at 21.Had a trainer who said it was OK to smoke but not more than 10 a day. I was stupid, but smart enough not to turn pro. Served me right. edgarg 05-23-2008, 03:17 AM just wondering, if you do what is it, what are your achievments what age did you start etc Forgot to say that I had my nose broken twice, but not from boxing, from other sports. Actually that's what finished me, and made me lose interest, apart from my girl chasing. I never even cut once, rarely had a nosebleed, but after the first break, at age about 18-19 my nose never really healed, badly set, had to be rebroken and reset, didn't heal properly, would swell up from a finger-flick. Even today occasionally bleeds for no known medical reason. Well i started off as a lightweight, then moved up to welterweight. I had trouble finding fights at lightweight and no one else was competitive around my area. I didn't have the finance to travel just for some amateur fight. I destroyed a few welterweights aswell. One time though we had this young German chap come down to a local amateur comp. I was the last fight, as thats what the crowd came to see. I can't remember his name correctly i think it was "Sven" or "Zsolt", or that was his fathers name. I dunno. Anyway i dominated 4 rounds. Clearly landing the head shots, while that guy was hitting my gloves, he was good though. Anyway next thing i know his father is having a word to the judge we had ringside. And bam! 3-1 to my little German friend, who took a beating. I was throwing lead rights all night. Anyway there really isn't enough money in boxing for my liking in this country. And i enjoy the party scene to much. Wasted potential ? Yes! Potential top 10 P4P? Well i would like to think so. Dick-Sucker 05-24-2008, 10:36 AM so ur money mayweather, multi talented?or a roy jones. Average defence, great handspeed and combos. I did have my weaknesses though. I use to get to confident and when i had my opponent backing off i would throw loopy left hands. Got caught a few times from it. One secret for amateur boxing : use the jab heaps in the 1st round. 2nd round rely on a lead right. 3rd round jab. 4th round lead right. Man this has your opponent confused for the entire fight! skyler 05-24-2008, 12:44 PM Average defence, great handspeed and combos. I did have my weaknesses though. And skills pay da bills. iron_boy 05-25-2008, 06:54 AM 1 fight 1 win and surely looking to add to that :) Greatwhitehope 05-25-2008, 09:43 AM none, as someone else said earlier i wouldnt mind having a crack at an amateur fight at some stage for the experience. I'd assume I'd be decent, good at all other sports. |
