ENTERTAINER Tania Zaetta has angrily denied leaked claims she had sex with Australian soldiers in Afghanistan.
The federal Opposition has demanded the Government apologise to the TV and radio personality, saying the unsubstantiated allegations are a "gross invasion" of her privacy.
A Department of Defence inquiry is underway into the leaking of the allegations, made in a briefing to Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon but strenuously denied by Zaetta, 37.
The department also has formally apologised to Zaetta for the leak, defence spokesman Brigadier Andrew Nikolic said.
"We are unaware of how that unauthorised disclosure occurred, but we apologise unreservedly to those named,'' Brigadier Nikolic said.
"In relation to the inappropriate behaviour allegation, we are unable to comment as the investigation is ongoing.''
There would also be a review of the process of distributing official information of the type that was leaked, he said.
"We hope to complete these inquiries quickly and have taken steps to formally apologise to the people whose names were published by the media,'' Brigadier Nikolic said.
The briefing reportedly claims she had sex with special forces soldiers at the Australian base in Tarin Kowt in Afghanistan during a forces tour last month.
"It's shocking, it's very disappointing from my point of view," Zaetta told the Nine Network tonight.
Mr Fitzgibbon has ordered an inquiry into how the briefing note became public, and why Zaetta was identified by name in the document.
Zaetta, who was taking part in a 17-day concert tour performing for Australian troops in the Middle East, has called the claims "ridiculous" and "vicious".
"It's complete made-up lies ... (and) apart from being hurtful it's damaging to a woman's career, to her reputation and I wish someone had come and asked me before there had been any documentation," she said.
Zaetta said there was little opportunity to be alone with any soldier while on the tour, even if she had wanted to be.
"They (the defence department) keep ... a close eye on you all and we at no one time really ever split up from being a group," she said.
"You're never alone with any soldiers, you are in full view of everybody else the entire time."
While he has been accused of being the source of the allegations, fellow entertainer and rock singer Angry Anderson says he doubts the incident occurred.
Another on the tour with Zaetta says they were too busy for mischief.
"I've heard of quickies mate, but you'd have to be really quick - we didn't have time to do anything," John Clinton, from the country rock band The Wolverines, told Macquarie Radio.
Zaetta, who has appeared in Bollywood movies, said the allegations could put in jeopardy the career she had spent 10 years building in India.
"When things like this get into countries like that (India) it's not taken lightly.
"Sex scandals - rumoured, alleged, bad chinese whispers, whatever it is - aren't taken lightly in a country like that."
Opposition defence spokesman Nick Minchin is demanding to know how the story reached the media.
"I insist that the Government come out and apologise to this woman for what's occurred," he told reporters.
"We should accept unreservedly her denial of these allegations and the government should immediately apologise.
"What should be investigated in my view is how these unsubstantiated allegations were ever leaked to the media, which has been obviously very hurtful to her, and obviously a gross invasion of her privacy."
Entertainers such as Zaetta and Anderson should be thanked for visiting troops in the field and not subjected to tawdry innuendo, said Senator Minchin.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said any investigation was best left to Defence.
Zaetta has also appeared in Baywatch but first made a name for herself in the 1996 television show Who Dares Wins, which is also the motto of the Australian SAS.
Do you guys reckon she had sex with the soldigers in Afghanistan?
I don't reckon so. What about these claims that some pf the soldigers have pictures and videos? Well I'm not going to believe them until I see them myself.
