Radke 01-06-2011, 11:48 AM Lemme dig this one. :D
Currently, the top two on your list(Urbandub/Typecast) is making a name outside our country, specially in Singapore and Malaysia.

Tamis! 01-07-2011, 11:06 AM Out of all those listed only Up Dharma Down IMO has the potential.
The rest of the pack is based on sheer influences that are mainly mainstream.
UDD has a style all it's own, they had this fusion groove a few other filipino bands can create. The only drawback is the overtly use of modern technology to mix their sound which could alter their personal touch, they should keep it to a minimum. Carlos Tanada (guitarist) parang si Mike Einzinger (Incubus) kung mag experiment sa instrumento, and he's the focal point of this band IMO.
The last time a band was this creative and original was The Ethnic Faces. Those guys kept their music underground in order for their style to be in true form. Only to disband and the members went to other good bands like Brownbeat all stars, color it red, etc.
ALAXAN_FR 01-10-2011, 05:23 AM Am no fan of the 3rd Gen Pinoy band outings, but i listen to them on the radio from time to time so i go mostly lke -"...sinong banda tumira nyan?" to know who did the songs. I still dig them in all because frankly.... They are the ones who still breaths life to OPM for close to 2 decades now... meaning all original compo... no revives, just pure lyricism and melodies (or noise :D whichever you put it) unlike those "genes" that says pinoys are great singers (which is true btw) but alam naman natin - we remember the singers for their original songs that stuck to them not to how good they ?were?....
Nways.... typical fashion, i agree that Urbandub & Typecast has the lead here, even if they do sound pop item generic.... they still has the "IT" factor to make it..... but just like the other guys did say...... WOLFGANG RULES!!!!!!!

[OT] hehehe.... batch mate kita pare.... we were the new skul then.... now were old skul... but yeah... we still rock better than what today has to offer.... at least Mark of Eheads continued the legacy with Sandwich. And Parokya (the original punk/ala Blink 182 band) is still here.
I'll add some here... some you could have never heard coz they're real underground stuff:
ERECTUS (the Red Hot Chilli of pinas... one of my faves)
The Youth (the first years)
Phil. Violators (God daddy of pinoy alternativos)
Tribal Fish (the ?first? All girl alternative band on the mainstream)
P.O.T. (Rob Roy - the pinoy glam punk guru)
(Death Metals)
TNT (Tame the Tikbalang)
KnK (Kabaong ni Kamatayan) ... both Marikina based bands
Death After Birth
Deiphago
Half Life Death
(Punk-OP)
Askals
Color It Red (Cookie Chua - love her then)
Feet like Fins (with the girl vocalist)
Advent Call
Alamid
Yano
There was also the Satriani / Vai version with Electric Skychurch (prodigy days nung bata pa sila)
Why i wonder is Siakol.... i dont like them then.... i hate them now because with their recent hits.... tunog lata pa rin sila... amoy p*k-p*k pa rin lyrics...

those were the days man.. good songs, loud music, great lyrics awesome rift! know them all, i remember when Jason Newsted of Metallica (dati) visit the philippines and jam with these bands he notably like electric skychurch for their uniqueness in music. and of course sino ba naman ang hindi makakakilala sa Phil Violators grand daddy ng underground music. sayang kung hindi sana nawala ang club dredd, mayrics at LA 105 we could still hear this great bands.

True man...true...damn..
Dredd was the place to be then.... started way back even when sir Patrick and Robbie has the place in Timog where i got to watch Afterimage (rock pa sila non di pa BonJovi...u know what i mean :D) perform live... Then the place closed. After awhile with the pinoy rock regallia in full swing, Dredd reopened at km 18 EDSA... we were all f*ckin hyped for that and even got our barkadas band did a gig there, (my band was roughshod out of the list due to the vast number of wanabees like us...pity me)
Mayrics and Kalye followed suit but did not have the aura and charisma Dredd has put together (for us hard nosed rockers anyway)....
Dredd... together with LA-105 (..all hail!!!!!) put the "do" in the sosyal OPM scene by introducing pure tagalog (and original) songs to be heard on the airwaves and be seen in the streets.... back then singing Tagalog was a source of joke, dapat ingles even if you do covers esp sa mga local singers...f*ck.
NU was just a bandwagonner... they pride themselves of being a rock radio station but they choose to play more foreign bands allotting only an hour and only on weekend at MIDNIGHT! to choose to play local bands...phoey!!!
When the Local band scene took off, they had (a little) change of heart and played/guested these bands (yeah right) and like i said... bandwagonin', they created Rock Awards as if they were the sole responsible for the paradigm shift....
DREDD and LA-105..... pillars of Pinoy Rock....Legends... rock On!

Sir mawalang galang npo, pero I have to prolly comment on some of your posts (though I might be wrong on some but based on my recollection).
Phil. Violators is actually not the father of alternative sa pinas, they're one of the predecessors of pinoy punk.
The band Ardourn Delirium (na naging Athena's curse, then after nawala si Myra Ruaro to join Pu3ska then Brownbeat, ang Athena's Curse ay naging Alamid) ang nag umpisa ng pinoy alternative, alongside Ethnic Faces. I still caught their last live performance waaayyy back sa unang CLUB DREDD sa may Tuazon, ung unang unang DREDD.
Ang Dead ends at Betrayed (with Papadom of trop dep) ang mga fathers of pinoy punk, the PhilBio, Bad Omen, etc, are the ones who created the movement mainstream. At kundi dahil sa Twisted Red Cross (Tommy Tanchangco's, whom would you believe after creating this punk movement and several years after, ay manager ng Introvoys lol) the philippine punk scene wouldn't be of existence.
Ang POT po IMO ay hindi glam, they're funk-rock, and IMO, they're the local version of The Red hot chilli peppers, with Karl Roy in vocals and Ian Umali's funk guitar grooves in tow. At syempre bago maging POT, Advent Call muna si Karl Roy, sila yung mga tumutugtog ng RHCP cover hits like "Give it away", they even fronted The Metallica concert way back.
Tribal Fish was correct, the first all girl alternative mainstream, but they weren't exactly alternative, the were a punk band. The first all girls band on TV was Kelt's Cross, mga Sonic Youth naman kinakana nila noon.
I agree with TNT and KnK being the foremost Death metal groups.
Sa Thrash naman Deceased and Resurrected, on which band members are good friends of mine.
Yung Feet like Fins mas gusto ko nung si Ron Ruiz pa ang vocalist, I didn't had much news when they shifted to a female singer.
Pinoy rock has gone a long way, and I'm sure it won't stop there...
ADD: Pu3ska is the predecessor of SKA sa pilipinas :headbang:
Pre, may copy ba kayo ng chain gang? and ung black na album ng NU 107 dati?

Great entries pare... sure clears some of the things i have to admit - i have already forgotten.
Some stuff i said about specially the categories which several analysts even during those days have a hard time placing each of the bands. Contradicting even their own (the bands) feel of the kind of music they do. Glam Rock - Punk was in a way - a bit twisted analogy of the way POT performs with their music live and the way they sound in the album takes, suffice to say that most of these bands sounds a bit differently the way they perform their songs live vs their records. EHeads and Dawn sounds better on the tape while theyre a bit off on the live acts. Some like Teeth sounds better live... each depending on their mood siguro.
The Alternative scene WAS the alternative scene those days , be it Punk, Metal, Death, Glam or what have you. Only with the concessions that these bands became available for record contracts on big labels that gave them the air time recognition to the MAINSTREAM that they did break out the ALTERNATIVE genre.
One example is WOLFGANG, even though they had signed major releases with an established label, they refused to compromise by belting out music that still is considered alternative due to their unpopular and not so radio friendly sounds. EHeads became POP so did RMaya and AfterImage. so you get my dig here....
All in all though compared to today's generation of bands, breakout bands today can be hardly considered as alternative, pure or otherwise. Lets face it, its not just the love for music, its an economy, one which bands also needs to carry on living. Record need to sell, and to do so, songs must be healthy enough to digest by the common listeners.
Thanks for the info man.... looks like marami tayong rakistang pinoy dito sa BS.... hehehe.... magkakaidad kung baga.... :headbang:
