View Full Version : I got whooped and need advice on headmovement and fighting taller guys
sterling 05-12-2008, 04:59 PM I need some advice on my head movement when im sparring with a headguard on and also advice on fighting taller guys.
Granted he was a light heavywieght and about 6ft1 but stil he kept gettin me with his jab it was annoying and he got a few power shots on but i didnt catch him much.
Also anyone notice that u mark up more when ur fighting someone above ur wieght class? lol
im 5ft 7 and super feather
Tyson123 05-12-2008, 06:19 PM Peek A Boo style is the answer to all you're problems.
Spambo boy 05-12-2008, 06:29 PM is it the guy you are body sparring in your video?
if so i'm not surprised, i know that a sparring excersize and not real sparring but he could've taken your head clean off with an uppercut on numerous occasions. Fairly good work on the outside though.

Try sparring someone closer to your own weight for god sakes he is a lt heavy nothing good will come out of that.
jberg 05-13-2008, 03:45 AM all ill say is if your fighting 6 inches under someone you have to get in on the inside and work the body. i cant help you that much because im a 6'1 middleweight
Golden-Gloves 05-13-2008, 05:34 AM watch a few fights of Winky Wright, should help ya out a bit,
all ya have to watch out for is those straits that split the
guard and those left hooks
mightymouse2k 05-13-2008, 06:10 AM Firstly keep your guard up at all times, use lateral footwork to enable you to come in from different angles and therefore allowing you to hit at differrent angles. Controlling the pace of the fight should be your goal as to get round the a longer reaching jab and cross. And remember not to get get upset or intimidated if you catch a shot(s) just stay cool headed.
sterling 05-13-2008, 12:16 PM thx people my jaw isnt made of glass so i doubt il go dwn easy he caught me flush a few times with nice left hooks and right straights that sent me back a lot.
Il try my best people gna work on my speed and lateral movement.
Yo sterling, i feel ya i got the same problem. Except the guy i spar is about my weight.
What i find works pretty well is using a double jab, the first one falls slightly short and then step in with the second. I use that often, sometimes he counters my first jab so i slip that then step in. Dunno if that'll work for you cause you have a bigger hight disadvantage than i do.
Good luck anyway.
PS-Nice sig :fing02:
jberg 05-13-2008, 12:39 PM i think your answer is just to carry on going. different things work for different people and scenarios. we dont know your or your opponents ins and outs. just perservere, patience is a virtue
ExecutiveOutlaw 05-13-2008, 11:31 PM yea my first sparring seesion i got jabbed the hell out of by a more taller, experienced, faster guy
what i learned is to double and triple your jabs while moving in. also move your head from side to side while moving in and never move in in a straight line, step left and right
making yourself hard to hit really frustrates a lot of bigger people. we have had threads on this before. so it may be a good idea to check through older posts.
bigdaddysback 05-14-2008, 12:55 AM A previous post explains it well, watch a few Winky fights. Obv not Winky v Hopkins but Winky v Mosley 1 is great viewing. Also James Toney fights will help cause he is great defensively! Tall fighters don't like fighting in close range and remember to tie up his hands to frustrate em. This may not sound great i have never seen Valuev v Chagaev (And probably don't wana) but it would be good to see how Chagaev beats the giant ape. Last but not least body shots (kidneys, heart). Best of luck champ!
aussieboxer2320 05-14-2008, 02:43 AM move ya head up down side to side etc.... keep your hands high, and parry his jab alot, then conter under or over the top immediately with a flurry, if he backs up , stay close to his chest and press him back with flurries, if you miss or he just absorbs it use your lighter feet to get out quickly. stay busy alos, nothing makes a big guy look better than a smaller fighter doing nothing.....good luck man
