View Full Version : Videos : Bagwork
!! Shawn 05-09-2008, 11:38 PM Feel free to critique this video.
My left hands are thrown light and without conviction because these were the last rounds of bag work and my middle knuckle on my left hand is severely swollen.
I quit midway through second round of filming due to pain in my left hand.
Rounds 9-10 of bag work.
I filmed these rounds to demonstrate good technique with a focus on a stiff jab and effective feinting. The bag is 200lb.

This is round 5 through I forget of bag work. This is Shawn style bag work. My knuckle IS swollen, but I still put some snap behind some of my left hand shots. There are a few noticeable times where I throw very light due to sharp pain in my hand.

As promised, a video of pad work is on the way, I have to cut it up into multiple videos to fit under the 10 min limit imposed by youtube.
no1p4p 05-09-2008, 11:45 PM Hey mate, ur pretty good man, good job. Keep the good work up. Why was ur left hand swollen? did u not wrap your hands correctly or sumthing..?
!! Shawn 05-09-2008, 11:58 PM Hey mate, ur pretty good man, good job. Keep the good work up. Why was ur left hand swollen? did u not wrap your hands correctly or sumthing..?
No, my bag gloves got worn out, I was practicing my left to the body for around 5 rounds, after the bag work, my knuckle started to swell up. I have been nursing it for 2 weeks. Its better than it was, but it is still very painful. I ice it every night, but it will take a while to heal while I am still actively using it during training.
not bad form, but you definatly look slow,(related to your knuckle injury?), throw your left hook more inside and now so wide, and when u switch to southpaw, keep that left hand higher.... good luck

Yes, in part due to my knuckle, and wanting to go easy on it, but even when I am healthy, I usually do not use all of my hand speed. That is one that I am working on. I usually rely on timing instead of speed to get my punches in so I tend to throw slower punches than I am really capable of which is a bad thing. I have speed, I need to use it more.

You do realize that the bag weights 60lb more than I do right? I can literally sprint at the bag an run into it and it still won't move...
200lb bag vs 140lb man. bag always wins.

Darkstranger 05-10-2008, 08:07 AM Nice vid bro!
But I never understand why so many people have to post a video when they're injured, or of sparring after 2 hours of circuit work or a 3 sec vid because they were "testing the camera"!
Good work though, you got quite a bit of criticism for the shadowboxing vid the other day.
Would like to see a sparring vid at some point, that's where you'll get the best pointers and tips from everyone.
Keep it up!

That is actually a well thought out move, it is designed to get your upper body out of range quickly, and I only do it after throwing a short power jab and from a south paw stance. Its a move I snatched from Joe Calzaghe.
I am very careful never to cross my feet, thanks for the well thought out criticism though.

There is never a day in the gym where you don't have some kind of injury. If there is, you simply are not pushing your body to the limit.

I rarely get injured when training to be honest. Does that mean I'm not working hard? Some are more injury prone than others, don't assume they aren't working hard bro.
beats 05-11-2008, 12:09 AM Enjoyed watching them. As a beginner its great to see vids of other people training. thanks alot! :)
mr tricky 05-11-2008, 06:25 AM wtf how can anyone give this guy much credit,
fair enough if he had just started boxing and learning the punches i wud give him credit,
but you seem to have been boxing a while and that vid in my opion was awful,
you seem to be working at about 5% of you max , no effort, super soft and slow punches thta anyone could just easily block ,parry or slip all nigh long,
nothing was throw wioth real conviction,
in my gym , you would be put with the Poor skilled group untill you improve , you wouldnt even be allowed to spar until you get better,
that thing you sed u snatched of joe calzaghe wtf ....the guy how critqed you is right your off balance and would get knocked over,
your no where near good enoguh to try and copy calzaghe,
the thing is i wouldnt even give you all these bad coments if you didnt act so big headed in all your vids, to me you look like a beginner who needs advice, and not a person who has been boxing years or whatever you sed...
im sure some of the other forum regulars may agree with me once they decided to comment.....

I did give you real criticism, and you replied with a bunch of straight up bull**** (Like "I hit with more power than you think." Of course you do. In your dreams. BS!) . After that, there's only you suck left for you, because nothing gets through to you anyway. I'm done with this, keep up the good work.
Dunno if there is much point me saying this....But i noticed that as you were moving to your left (on the second video) near the start, You were sort of bringing your feet into a straight line or slightly crossing them.
The reason they are saying you look begginer is cause you are not punching with much speed or noticable power, possibly due to the heavy ass bag though
Peace:D

You told me my right hands were ****ty, and I agreed with you. I am a natural southpaw, of course my right hands are ****ty. I need lots of work on my right hands. I don't get full extension. I don't get full turn in my body, I shift my weight to far over my front foot, I don't turn them over all the way.
As I said, I know what my mistakes are, and I know what I need to work on. I am not claiming to be perfect, or infallible. I never claimed to have the fastest hands in the world but I do have more hand speed than I use, and that is one of my mistakes.

That is a good critique. I do have a tendency to get my feet in a strait line. I have been working on that, but I still do it from time to time. If you watch my pad work, I fell off balance throwing a body shot because of this.

ok il tell you why you look like a beginner..
you throw slow over controlled shots, that looks like your just learning,
you hit very sofly eevn if it is a heavier bag, people at my gym hit heavy bags like that and you can physicaly see and hear the whack, and the snap in the punches, they throw hard firm fast shots, whereas you throw slow soft over controlled shots,
i would usally be a bit nicer, but it seems your way to over confident in your ability, dont excuse your self out of things,
if sumone says somting they say it because that is what they see, they wouldnt lie to you for the sake off it, so take it and work to improve,
tbh you look like a beginner and you dont in a way,
its like you know how to throw the shots and do the easy part but your just not improving on that...

yes dont try and say that. im saying you look likea beginner just to be an arsehole wtf,
if you read ovet this thread you will see that all of your comments are in defens of your self,
if sumone says, ''mabey its because it is a really heavy bag'' or ''mabey he dose have bad hands''
you say ''thank you'' or ''thats right''
why post a vid if your only going to acsept comments or people sticking up form you,
i say my own opinion

Darkstranger 05-11-2008, 04:45 PM I have to admit, with every response from Shawn I detect an attitude behind it!
If you don't like criticism I wouldn't bother posting videos. I also get the impression you think you're better than you are.
You mentioned previously you know more about boxing than most people on this forum, but there's a difference between knowing what to do, and actually executing it!
mr tricky 05-11-2008, 04:56 PM having rewatched both your videos ive come up with a few things....
firstly i think it comes down to personal expirience ,
e.g some poeple look at your vid and might see you working hard and might see you very talented because your better than the standard that they see at their own gym. whereas others who go to really hard working top class gym would look down on you.
e.g. at my gym we do circuits with timed rounds, e.g. 2mins on bags ,2mins skipp,2mins shadow box, 2mins bag, we do tun ups and ground work wich is like really hard exericeses of sit ups , push ups , burpees and others that really push yourself to the limit,
when we are on bag a timer would ring and everyone imdiatly begins working hard, hitting moving, upper cuts ,hooks, rights everything, people going to aba finals and other all working really hard and look great, when the timer ends people gasp for air and move on to the nex thing in the circuit,
so if you were at my gym by the looks of thing you would fall behind as you seem to set yourself at a slow relaxed pace ,
like in your second vid, wtf is that guy in the red doing, fair enough if he is just and oldish guy who trains, but dont tell me he will be entering any competition or anyting, he was litrally pushing and stroking the bag, and then you came on and thats what you do aswell,
you push the bag, when you jab their is no snap just ad firm push, you seem to repeat the same move where you circle to the left and jab thee times.
so thats how i see it,
you will see things diffrent to me and others because your not used to the standard others work at,
other may agree,
e.g 1 dacatas would probably say your not working hard enough because he has good body and is a good boxer and wudnt be where he is now working like you do, because he is used to working at good gym
wheras a boxing newbie to the forum may look at you and think wow because he is not used to ur standard.

No attitude simply irritation that I people are offended when I correct them on bad advice.
Such as throw whipping hooks. I appreciate your input, but that is simply bad advice.
Whipping hooks have no power. Just because a punch makes a loud slapping sound on the bag does not mean it is hard nor effective.
I prefer to throw my punches short, and crisp. My hooks are not whipping arm shots, they are short crisp thudding hooks with leverage and leg power behind them.
Also stuff like people saying I look like a beginner because my technique is to crisp and clean? One guy told me not to use footwork and just wail on the bag. I am open to constructive criticism, and it is starting to get closer and closer to being constructive.
mr tricky 05-11-2008, 05:03 PM this is my exact point,
your hookes are noting like you say they are,
they arnt short and crisp with lots of leg power,
please go back and rewatch, they look teribly weak and slow like your patting the bag in the side,
you just wont acsept no for an answer ,

Oldish is an understatement. He is 74.
The reason I know I am good... My sparring partner just won the*censored* and I am very competitive with him.
I place an emphasis on quality. If you can't do it slow, there is no way in hell you can do it fast. My technique is very polished. I am a very technical fighter, I have solid fundamentals, I get good leverage on most of my punches.
I know I am good, I am competitive with a National Champion, and other very good amateurs, so I am sure you can understand why I am a little irritated when people tell me I look like a beginner...

I agree my left hooks arnt, My knuckle is injured. Turning on my left hooks would be stupid. Take a look at my right hook, and the right hooks to body at the end of the second video. Those were delivered crisp as were many others.
No, his technique don't look beginnerish. He punches with fair speed tbf, and the 'lack of power' fair enough but the shots make a thud when they hit the bag. Kinda like the sort of **** that would snap your head back.
Footwork is good and fast, occasionally the feet line up a bit or come close but thats it. I can get the backlash cause you do seem to be arrogant a bit Shawn :lol1:
Thats what i gotta say. Being overly critical of someone just cause they don't George Foreman his punch bag is a bit silly imo

'i know i am good'' im sorry but you are not! name your sparring partner, he won the nationals?? in which counrty is that?
youve got your head way to high in the clouds and i am dieing for one of the more expiriced forum members to come on and put you in your place,
how old are you? ive just turned 16, ive been boxing for 1 year and a little bit and i could honselty say that your knowwhere near the standard of my sparring partners, who is this guy who won the nationals?????
mr tricky 05-11-2008, 05:16 PM No, his technique don't look beginnerish.
Being overly critical of someone just cause they don't George Foreman his punch bag is a bit silly imo
thats not the point.
if this guy came on and sed ive just started boxing and have been for a few weeks please post ocmments, i would give loads of advice and sya well done,
but hes come on saying he sparrs with national champion and he backfires at everyone who critqes him,
he says he knows he is good, and calls people retards in oter thread and calls people arsehols who call him slow,
he dose look slow and weak and like he is going at 5% effort

*censored*
I made a mistake. The guy in the first video with headgear on is 74. The guy in red, I don't know how old he is, but he is from the WildCard. He is pretty lazy in and out of the ring, kind fights like James Toney. Not very clean, but he goes the job done.

Yeah, I understand the backlash. People do not like being told that they are wrong, even when they are. People offer me critiques, and I explain to them what I am doing, and why I am doing it, and somehow that makes me a beginner, for knowing what I am doing and why I am doing something.
You make a good point about footwork. Footwork is easily the best measure of how long someone has been in the sport, or what level they are on. People punch different, footwork is pretty universal.

Yup. Your clearly not a begginer as EVERY begginer has lame footwork, maybe not compleatly aweful. But its always bad, you sometimes made very quick side steps and stuff that would clearly be to hard for a begginer imo

Hell yeah, Roy Jones - Can't be touched!
lol, I didn't make the video, someone made it for him. *cenored* finals. They were not boxing fans so they left out all the good stuff.

My punchers were slow in the first video, I will concede the point. In the second video, my hands were not nearly as slow as you are making them out to be, I actually had some pretty damn fast punches in some parts.
I was unaware that making something look effortless was a sign of being a beginner, I was under the impression that it was a sign of skill and experience...
mr tricky 05-11-2008, 05:44 PM i hate to say it but.....
that guy in the vid is made out to look better than he in with all the music n all that,
pads looked awaful, and fight look wild.....
never the less he looked alot better than you and i dont belive you give him a good contest...
aso if he is national champion like you say, if you give him a good contest like you say, then surly you could go far in the nationals then eh.....
belive me from your vids you dont look like you can compete with any national champion,
you look like your better than you think you are and you nedd to learn to acsept critasism, im sick of arugeing,
p.s prove me wrong and post more vids of you mabey sparring that guy, and also how long have u been boxing honestly, and how many Am you had if any?

But, it is obvious you are just trying to be a dick. Now you are saying that the #1 ranked *censored* in the USA is not as good as he looks...

:rofl::rofl:
jadagod 05-11-2008, 07:20 PM wtf how can anyone give this guy much credit,
fair enough if he had just started boxing and learning the punches i wud give him credit,
but you seem to have been boxing a while and that vid in my opion was awful,
you seem to be working at about 5% of you max , no effort, super soft and slow punches thta anyone could just easily block ,parry or slip all nigh long,
nothing was throw wioth real conviction,
in my gym , you would be put with the Poor skilled group untill you improve , you wouldnt even be allowed to spar until you get better,
that thing you sed u snatched of joe calzaghe wtf ....the guy how critqed you is right your off balance and would get knocked over,
your no where near good enoguh to try and copy calzaghe,
the thing is i wouldnt even give you all these bad coments if you didnt act so big headed in all your vids, to me you look like a beginner who needs advice, and not a person who has been boxing years or whatever you sed...
im sure some of the other forum regulars may agree with me once they decided to comment.....
agreed he needs to work harder but he did say he was injuried so i won't jugde him to much!
