I was just wondering what everyone thought. Left and right-wingers welcome to answer this one.

Keep in mind that next year will mark the 60th anniversary of the U.S. presence in Korea. So fifty+ years is certainly not out of the question.

Just my opinion, but I don't think next week's election will affect the situation. No matter who is president they won't simply be able to hitch up and leave.

It took about either 5 or 10 years to rebuild germany after WWII. I cant remember which one, though.

I think about 10 years.

There is a big difference between our presence in Iraq and our presence in Korea. I think if the country is stabilized we will get out if the government of Iraq asks us to.

Well, techincally the situation in Korea is not stabilized, right? Things are okay in the South but the people of the North are still suffering terribly.

You can argue whether or not the U.S. presence has ever helped matters there. I think I'll stay out of this one, at lest in this thread (I want to be at least partially impartial for once :D )

We are still in Germany, so I would say that we are going to be in Iraq for a while even if it does stabilize.

We can't simply compare the re-structuring of Germany in 1945-55 to the current/future Iraq scene. Germany was an economic powerhouse literally taking on the World. Also, all of Europe sought the same stability that the USA supported.

Iraq should not be simply thought of as a "nation" needing re-building. Because Iraq needs to be "built" for the first time! Plus the whole region is a powderkeg, unlike post-war Europe. The issue in Iraq is far more daunting than East-West Germany and the world is not behind the USA this time around.

We should get out now. We are just making it worse.
