I've always been aware of the difference between art, and a product for mass market consumption, but it wasn't until today listening to some Tool that it struck me.
Previously, I thought that there was some indiscernable line between art and commercialism which could not be defined, not so.
Art, true art is created, beauty in the eye of the beholder - that beholder being the creator of said art piece. That is, true art has a selfish nature, it is created in order to pleasure the maker with no regard to commercial successfulness of the piece nor general acceptance.
A product is created by a creator who's sole purpose is to seek mass approval, in this day and age epitomised by the dollar value that the item or piece can bring to the creator and it's investors. There is no thought given to how the piece invigorates or pleases the creator, merely "will it appeal to people?".
However, these are not two seperate and distinct positions, they are instead polars on a spectrum, depanding on which side the creator leans to, determines if they are an artist in the true sense of the word, or whether they are an enterpriser.
Just a thought.
