Surely I can't be the only fan of the greatest game in here?

I used to follow football religiously, but the ticket prices forced me away. It's just too expensive these days.

Living in St. Helens I had the perfect alternative (although this was when Saints were in the shadow of Wigan).

I still watch Match of the Day and such, but RL offers far more entertainment for the money. And the players don't behave like tits.

I am a Rugby League fan and support Widnes Vikings. Rugby League is defo up there as my favorite sport and shame it does'nt get the props it deserves.

League will never get props with a game like Union around, just doesn't make enough sense for the casual fan to be able to understand what's going on.

The thing is League is an infinitely easier game to play and understand. I also think it's far more entertaining than Union.

I'm not saying you can't watch a good RU game - it's just that the majority of them seem to descend into kicking contests between the fly-halves.

Wiganers stuffed at Cardiff by the mighty Saints.

What a weekend!

i understand what you're saying and I agree with principle but a rugby fan who understands the game (as you will do ) will also appreciate the work of the forwards to enable to fly halfs to kick for goal etc..... people like richard hill, neil back were vastly under-appreciated in the world cup winning effort

I agree that RU is a complex sport which requires a combination of excellent technical skills to play well. Back, Hill, Johnson etc. - I have a lot of respect for those guys.

There's just not enough action.

Maybe the weather has something to do with it (RL made a smart move switching to summer), or maybe there are just too many players in a team (RU was conceived in an era when players were nowhere near as fast, big, powerful, skillful, capable of covering the ground they do today etc).

I'm not saying League is perfect (if anything the game has been de-skilled just a bit too much) - but match against match I do find it more entertaining.

hmm i know what your saying, its a very quick and frantic game so there always seems to be something going on. But the emphasis is on tackling and not flair, or maybe i've missed something.... it just seems that rarely you will see a great break from a back in league which will open up a defence whereas when a back in union cuts open the defence its a thing of beauty! haha i just realised im very biased!!

Couldn't agree more mate. Being Welsh, flair is what we do at the moment, and nothing league can do can possibly rival the individual skill and flair you get in Union and not in League.

I prefer union (though my only team is England) but i used to follow league as well. When the Sheffield Eagles merged with Hudds i stopped watching for a while and now i only follow the new eagles on the net.

Darren Lockyer, Jamie Lyon, Leon Pryce, Sam Burgess, Benji Marshall, Willie Mason, Keiron Cunningham, Sonny Bill Williams, Mark Gasnier, Matt King, Israel Folau and Greg Inglis lack flair in comparison to which Union players did you say?

I’ve followed League for years but the 6 tackles before conceding possession still to this day pisses me off, rids the game of any spontaneity. I do prefer the tactical side to Union as well as the ruckaging/mauling/scrummaging/tactical kicking & the one on one tackling from the game (as opposed to the leagues gang rapes) but league (and it’s bull**** stereotypes) always entertain me…

And i'd agree that League is easier acceptable for newer fans

that is a stupid thing you have come out and said there mate. I watch both Union and League and can tell ya that League is alot more skillful than Union. The reason Wales are playing with so much attacking flair is down to one of the greatest Rugby players of this generation in Shawn Edwards. I hate getting into the debate between Union and League cos it is impossible to agree which is the better of the two. Like I said I watch both codes but prefer League alot more due to been brought up in a Rugby League town. I don't watch the English Union league but the super14 league is awesome to watch imo.

there is no way that league is more skillful than union, I just wont have that. League is a game based primarily on tackling (which i respect) but the ball handling, kicking and general flair skills of a union back is in far excess to things you see on a rugby league field

do you seriously watch RL? Ball handling skills? and flair? Rugby League as all that and better than Union. Why do you think Union are signing all the RL coaches to help them more on attacking and defence? Even Stuart Barnes who hates League came out and said League is alot more skillful than Union. If you wanna see some skill watch the NRL and you will be impressed at the amount of level of ball handling skills and the way League players can make breakes and overlaps.

I enjoy both codes, although i'm a union fan as i was brought up watching Northampton Saints and never really saw/heard much about league until i moved up to uni in Sheffield last year. League is a much faster game however i enjoy the contested aspects of union lineouts/rucks/scrums etc.

yeah that is what Union is about mate. Stephen Myler still play for the saints? how is he going on? His uncle Tony was one of the best Rugby players in either code you will ever see.

Yeah he's still here, he's looking like a pretty good long-term replacement for spencer at fly-half aswell, hoping to see more of him next season. Didn't he play for widnes RL before?

yeah he started off his pro career here and is a Widnes lad. the Myler name is a huge one in RL but he wasnt much kop to be honest. he was to slow and his ball handling was'nt quick enough for league. he has a good kicking game though.
