:::: SPOILER ::::

Sonny Liston, the controversial former world heavyweight boxing champion is brought back to vivid life by actor Ving Rhames in the Robert Townsend directed biopic Phantom Punch.

From his discovery by a priest while serving time at the Missouri State Penitentiary to the infamous Phantom Punch by Cassius Clay which effectively ended his career, the movie spans the years from 1950 to his mysterious and untimely death in 1971. His run ins with racism, the mob and the law are all examined, as are his personal relationships with his wife and lover, as the film shares his triumphant and tragic story.

From the lows of poverty and jail to the heights of a world championship, Phantom Punch provides audiences with a compelling portrait of the man behind the headlines.

Movie is in production as we speak. :D

Very exciting! For any fans who might be interested in a very good and highly underated boxing movie, Ving Rhames also played Don King in a HBO film 'The Don King Story'. Very good actor, very versatile.

I actually thought Will Smith did a good job in Ali, got the voice, mannerisms and physique spot on!

The film was well shot but Michael Mann didn't do a good job of building up the characters, especially the other boxers. The build up to the Foreman fight has been portrayed much better in documentaries.

The overall film was so-so, but Will Smith was phenomenal in Ali.

Glad to see a movie about Sonny Liston. Just hope they put him in a high light and not just talk about the Ali fights where he was not physiclly or menatlly prepared to his fullest in either fight.

And i don't think Smith did that great in the Ali movie. He seemed to play his Ali charector too mean. Unless the movie wanted to show Ali off camera which then mean that they would have no dailloge.

To further elaborate on my "Ali" comment, I just feel with the talent they had compiled, a much better story could have been told. What they did in that movie was, in essence, remake "The Greatest", in my opinion.

The story line was nothing new, there was little to no insight on Ali, the person, etc. It was merely a retelling of all that is common knowledge and a personification of "Ali the Showman" as oppossed to Ali the man and how he came to develope his ideals, etc.

Just for once, I wish someone would elaborate in film about his youth; how he started boxing, how he almost missed greatness because of his fear of flying, how he raced horses....literally, to become faster, how he wasn't looked at as anything really special by his peers while in school, how he was a class-clown, how he stood up to a bully after he'd started fighting on the local Louisville amateur boxing show, etc, etc, etc.

Something that isn't common knowledge!

I just saw "Ali" as a tremendous opportunity wasted. What we saw was "Ali the Legend".....not so much "Ali the Man". There is a difference after all.
