G'day Guys

This is my first post, and I need advice.
I started following boxing for a short time, after the Mayweather vs DLH fight.
Tomorrow Is my first boxing training session. What should I expect. Will I learn to box straight away or fitness training first. I am fit already becasue of Pre-season training for Aussie rules.

Where should I buy gloves and boxing bags from. Rebel sport and or where.

My boxing gym is small. Does anyone know the best boxing gym in Melbourne. How much do you guys pay a week and train. Should I do weight training when doing boxing to help gain weight.

Thankz in Advance.

Good to hear mate.

Just stay relaxed all the guys at your gym will be nice and understanding. Everyone starts some time. E.G Winky at 18.

Buy some gloves, non-sparring yet, from rebel, tape.

They will start you off with skipping, then bag work, then in the ring with the trainer against the pads. Then back on the speedball after, and then you can do whatever you like in the gym..

I pay $12.50 an hour. I go every tuesday. Don't sparr though.

It should be cheap man.

You will enjoy it. Soon your fists will be accurate weapons. Your self confidence will improve.

Get some handwraps they are about $5-10 from rebel, some bag gloves and you should be alright. Does the gym provide gloves? I know mine provides some for people.

I pay $10/ 2 hour session, first hour is strictly intense fitness 2nd hour is skills/ sparring.

Good luck brother, no need for heavy bag and all that at this point, just learn the fundamentals and shadow box a lot. Beginners tend to get into some bad habits from trying to hit the bag too hard, which is why shadow boxing can be better for you, and if done right provides just as good workout :)

ultimate and salty gave you a pretty standard version of it. for a wider range of experiences try posting the same thread in the training section.

my take..

most places will have gloves if you dont want to go out and buy your own right away.. i would definitley buy your own wraps from rebel or wherever.. take the time to learn how to put them on properly..

depending on the gym you'll do a mixture of shit.. they wont throw you in the deep end right away.. they'll probably take you through the basics.. and have you getting a sweat skipping.. on the bags etc.

put in a good effort and listen to your trainers.. dont expect miracles.. stick at it and you'll be sweet.

o and forget your afl fitness.. boxing training is a whole new world of hurt ;)

and good luck man

Is boxing more of a aerobic sport than a anaerobic.

its not up to the gym to get you fit. fitness is your responsibility. the gym is there to teach you the fundamentals, provide you with sparring, and some guidence on correct exercise routines.

your first lessons should work around your posture (stance), footwork, and jab. as you get proficient with that, you will move into crosses and hooks, rips etc. eventually you will spar with an experienced boxer who wont take your head off (show some respect). eventually you will spar flat out, and have your first fight.

you will only get that far if you keep turning up, get fit, and have the ability to defend yourself.

that is how it should work. all gyms are different. ask the gym what equiptment to buy.

Update on my First training session. It was bloody hard man. Learning the footwrok took awhile. The numbers of squats and sit up I done was more than I did in my whole life. The trainer showed me how to throw a jab. My right hand need more practice and footwork. The speed ball is hard to master.

Overall : awesome

Good work mate, those situps will become nothing in no time, then you shall meet the beast of training... burpees.

Practise what the trainer taught you and you will be on your way in no time

That's a moot point, you are comparing apples and oranges.

If boxers did in fact fight 25 fights a year the injury rate would most likely be comparable IMO.

go to Fitzroy stars boxing gym in Gertrude st, Fitzroy. Its an Aboriginal gym, good guys and trainers there. Value for money aswell, i think it is about $80 for 3 months. there is also a weights gym upstairs which is included with your membership. im sure the trainer there trains guys for amateur comp. to get there, take the '86 tram' from bourke st in the city, the gym is across the road from the fitzroy high rise flats. there is a yellow sign out the front. i used to train there, it is the best value for money gym i could find in melb. if you want to know more, ask.
