View Full Version : Side effects?
boxing4ever 04-20-2008, 07:50 PM Well I have been training for a little over a year and Before I started up I knew what could happen from training. I have a fear of having a fighters nose and brain damage. Everytime this is brought up, I immediatly get responses back like "if you dont want that happening then quit". I Don't want to quit but for some reason the fear of both of those things never left me. I was sparring the other day and I was outworking my sparring partner the first 2 rounds, the 3rd round he came out throwing bombs and I got caught with a couple of rights directly to my nose. I have been hit hard lots of times but, for some reason for the rest of the round I lost hope and just barly punched back. My nose started gushing out blood and I felt embarassed in front of the whole gym. I came home with the war stains and my mom flipped out. The kid I was sparring was 6"1 and im about 5"8. My nose is not broken but it seems just a little bit swollen. I am shocked and really disapointed in myself about letting this happen to me. Any comments on this weird fear or anything you guys would like to throw out there go ahead.Anyway what are some side effects some of you guys have noticed since starting up?
bloody nose has really doesn't mean much.
i had times where i had a trickle of blood and didn't notice until that hours after i had a bit of dried blod on my shirt. i was thinking to my self, how the **** could i not have blood on my face, notice it, or anything? must've not bled much.
the only problem with getting tapped in the nose is that it can make a person's eyes water and that can leave a person without clear vision for a second or two.
your nose gets used to it. well, most noses i suppose. not sure if all people's nose adapts as smoothly.
blood is something to be proud of once in a while.
brain cells, they go all the time. every time you sneeze you lose brain cells. as long as you aren't going to be fighting 80 fights in a pro environment, you likely have no need to worry.
if you ever feel there is a problem, see your doc.
hey, next time hit him right in the beak for me. a hard, straight sharp right. or, power jab man!
boxing4ever 04-20-2008, 10:54 PM Bumppppppp
fraidycat 04-20-2008, 11:05 PM The flat boxer's nose is a result of repeated breaks.
I have been training and sparring for the last two years in an inner-city gym that caters to gangsta-thugs and extreme athletes. I have seen concussions, "KO's on their feet," busted ribs, and sprained and broken wrists, fingers, and hands. I have seen guys dropped to one knee more times than I can count and I've even seen guys laid out flat in sparring. I've seen hundreds of bloody noses and had dozens, myself.
BUT. . . .
I have yet to see a broken nose from sparring with sparring headgear and 16-oz. gloves. Not one. I'm not saying it doesn't happen; just that a broken nose is far more likely under competition circumstances -- 10 or 12 oz. gloves and open-faced headgear. I've seen some bad bleeders and one that had a trainer swearing that it was broken but it turned out not to be.
Don't sweat it. It's a perfectly normal fear but it has little basis in reality -- like most fears.
I come home with a black eye and/or a bloody nose and my wife just sighs and says, "It's like being married to a 7-year-old, I swear." She gets me an ice pack and I have a Scotch. It's what we do. Swimmers get wet, skaters fall down, boxers get punched in the face. It's an extreme sport.
Salty 04-21-2008, 12:41 AM Yeah mate don't worry too much about brain damage, if you drink your probably more likely to get damage from that than boxing. Except your cardiovascular system is getting a workout so your getting healthier.
On the otherhand don't spar at all if you have a headache from sparring the previous night, as there is such a thing as second impact syndrome which amplifies concussions severely and can have bad impacts.
Just more confidence in your defence mate and you will be fine, nothing to be ashamed of from a bloody nose, just means you have to something to work on more!

:werd:
Second Impact Syndrome can KILL you.
The two things you should never **** around with in this sport are headaches and hand pain. Never train with either.
aussieboxer2320 04-21-2008, 12:57 AM man up far out bro , having a busted up face is part of boxing
boxing4ever 04-21-2008, 07:06 AM man up far out bro , having a busted up face is part of boxing
no its not man, you cant tell me every fighter walks around with that mentality! If they did none of them would have wifes(unless there gold diggers).
sterling 04-21-2008, 09:16 AM jus move ur head more thats all i rarely get hit in the nose and i have never bled from my nose at all.
Ive been hit about 10 times in my nose and its fine i never bleed but it cud be because i have a negro nose lol
Salty 04-21-2008, 09:20 AM man up far out bro , having a busted up face is part of boxing
No it's not if you have that mentality you are going to get hit and end up having a marciano nose, if practice your defence theres no reason why you can't end up looking no different to when you started.
elgaringo 04-21-2008, 09:32 AM you've got to think about the positives and try and shut out the negatives when it comes to boxing. Remember boxing is about 90% mental and 10% phisical so you have to work on your mentality if you want to win fights.
just think how many pro boxers there is and has been and the very small percentage of them that ended brain damaged. you cant step out in the rain and not get wet.
bottom line is remember everyone gets caught (when i boxed i got bloody noses regular but my nose just got used to it) so you need to work on your defence and your mentalitly. remember your not the only one, so does every boxer.:boxing: :boxing:

That was a good quote. How do you give points?
yeah, thay was a good post.
btw, don't pay much attention to the "man up" comments. people need to understand that you are fairly new to the sport/art of fighting.
keep going man. if you are ever in brew city, give me a PM. i will work with you on some **** you would've probably never heard of. my specialty is in coordination and mechanics in relation to power output.
boxing4ever - as always, feel free to PM me.
Unanimous 04-22-2008, 08:09 AM My nose has been broken twice BUT both times it was due to street fighting when I was an idiot with the alcohol. I've not done any sparring yet but I'm slightly concerned that my nose is weaker than most peoples due to the fact it has been broken twice but I'll deal with it when/if it happens once I do have sparring sessions.
And, Boxing4ever, as fraidycat said, he has never known a broken nose in sparring so I think you should be okay. Oh, and make sure you hide those war stains from your ma!

Only twice, you're obviously not from Glasgow then! lol

Sounds a lot like New Zealand

Ahh the highlands. i lived in inverness for 6 months, thats where my love of whisky was born. Every bastard i met had this William Wallace hard arse split personality that would appear whenever they had a coupla of pints.......or a coupla iron brews. Beautiful part of the world though.

Yeah, I stayed not far from Inverness and you're right about the split personality with alcohol (hence why I got my nose busted).
Thankfully when I moved away from my wee town I was able to ditch the attitude tho - a lot of the problems up there are because there is eff all to do.
2swell k-wells 04-22-2008, 01:21 PM side effects also include small pee pee's.
Evil_Meat 04-22-2008, 09:32 PM man one time i got beat badly for 2 rounds and my nose was gushing blood but i chose to go out for the 3rd round and totally dominated the guy. When it comes to a real fight if u really wanna win you gotta be prepared to die... at least thats my idiot mentality

that was an am fight, right? 'cause trying to kill eachother isn't the smartest practice in training. at least not every session should be like that.
dfwtx 04-22-2008, 11:17 PM think of zelenoff and draw inspiration from his heroic feats and 900-lb hook.
Romero87 04-23-2008, 12:51 AM i wouldnt worry your partner is occasionally gona catch you with that punch thats gona make your nose bleed and visa versa...i hate nose shots it like stuns me for a sec and pisses me off more and more. However ive heard that as well that the more your nose gets tapped the more it will get use to it...Dont worry man it happends to everyone even the pros!!
Salty 04-23-2008, 01:05 AM think of zelenoff and draw inspiration from his heroic feats and 900-lb hook.
May 3rd is so close i can not wait
Sven72 04-23-2008, 01:45 AM Body shots are way worse than getting hit in the face/nose. I'm still recovering from a rib shot I recieved two weeks ago. And getting a beauty in the solarplexus or liver is just awful
Evil_Meat 04-23-2008, 07:54 AM that was an am fight, right? 'cause trying to kill eachother isn't the smartest practice in training. at least not every session should be like that.
no if it been an am fight the fight would of been stopped there was blood all over my shirt, on my shoes, etc... I know you shouldn't be trying to take people's heads off but that was my mentality in the 1st and 2nd and i only get beat up very badly by an older, taller guy. But one mental adjustement in between the 2nd and 3rd changed everything. I didn't like what happend that day but i couldn't let myself continue to get embarassed in front of everybody at my gym. In the 3rd I didn't really go out hard or swing hard, i just outboxed him so badly with extremely stiff jabs, quick straight rights followed by quick defensive moves. The shots i hurt people with are quick accurate straight right hands... no need to throw them hard because ive found that speed and accuracy hurt people more than when i try to actually try to hit hard. For some reason i just didn't care about the damage he'd already done to me and i totally turned the tables... Looking back on it i felt like i would of died to win that 3rd round, i remember taking a big left hook and i just instantly fired back with a hurtful righthand

LOL!
I'm nowhere near as crazy as I used to be, probably cos I dinnae drink that much nowadays (hardly any at all to be honest, I've only been steamin' once this year). I sometimes look back and wonder why I didnae suffer more damage than broken bones and scars when I was a teenager cos I was a wee bawbag - always starting ****!
Glad I eventually grew up!

I sometimes get headaches AFTER sparring.. is that OK?

no its not ok, your losing brain cells. Quit before u become retarded.

hahaha man you must worry the **** out some ppl with posts like that... but honestly the answer is yeah sometimes u will have a headache after a hard spar just dont spar again until ur head feels fine and yes you're losing brain cells but you aern't losing nearly enough to get noticable brain damage. People who have brain damage in boxing have generally had an entire amateur career, and a long pro career of boxing and it can take its toll but its more rare to see a "shot" amateur fighter.

Gonna have to disagree with you there, homeslice.
The truth is this; the only possible outcome of a boxing match of any kind, sparring, exhibition or competition, is experience and brain damage. Might be super minor, but it is what it is.
It's just the way it is.
alcohol, unless you're drinking a 5th a night for 15-20 years, isn't going to affect you like professional boxing
Stormin' Norman 04-25-2008, 08:37 PM take klitschko for example,
he has a ph.d and stuff, but...
put a somewhat complex calc2 problem in front of him,
i bet he would mentally implode..
makaveli_uk 04-26-2008, 12:59 PM Now im worried.
I dont want to get brain damage?!

what the **** are you talking about man? look at George forman, sugar ray leonard, mcgirt and a bunch of others after their carrers have NO apparent damage and fucntion fine.

Actually the vast majority of them end up with brain damage. 3 of 4 boxers with over 20 professional bouts have symptoms of chronic traumatic brain injuries (aka brain damage)
Brain damage doesn't mean you have Parkinson's or slur your words like Meldrick Taylor. Its a part of our sport. As is nose damage.
All flattening of the nose is not caused by breaks, although the kinds of noses you see on Hatton and Manfredo are, there are other types of nose damage.
The kind that Shane Mosley has. The cartilage in your nose deteriorates and your nose gradually flattens out against your face.

Really, so what are the sign of brain damage Mr. Smarty pants?
sterling 04-26-2008, 02:11 PM OMG U LOSE BRAIN CELLS DOING ANYTHING LOL U LOSE THEM ALL THE TIME! The only way u wil get brain damage is depending on your style of fighting if u dont want to get hit then be defensive and move ur head alot and counter punch its as simple as that.

You're an idiot! Stop posting on my threads! If you are going to try and make me sound stupid, at least come up with a better insult than "Mr. Smarty Pants"!
Now lets get onto the real issue. I wasn't trying to make you sound stupid, you do that on your own quite frequently, I was trying to educate you on brain damage.
Obviously you could care less about actually learning, and would instead prefer to sling mud. You could really use some maturity.

Because I am a nice person. More than you can say.
West24 04-28-2008, 01:29 AM boxing4ever youre an idiot. either way, i read somewhere that 87% of pros have some sort of brain damage when they retire. do you know how much they probably go through that you cant notice? most of them probably get horrible headaches, migraines etc. lots of other things they probbaly take medication for because of a pro boxing career.
makaveli_uk 04-28-2008, 02:42 PM This post has persuaded me to practise counter punching more
