View Full Version : 15 Round Championships
INFAMOUZ 10-28-2004, 02:21 PM Bring back 15 rounders...Any half azzed conditioned fighter can go 12.. 15 would weed out all the pretenders, leaving only the REAL champions. Imagine if Ali - Frazier 1 was only 12 rounds. Think of all the great fights we as fans would have been cheated out of. And all the great ones were missing now. Dramatic comebacks in the 13th or 14th round. Stunning one punch ko's in the 15th. Imagine Holyfield-Foreman 15 rounds.. Gatti - Ward...etc.
I can see the reasoning behind fights going 15 rounds, but I think it would shorten boxers careers and cause more serious injury as in theory, a boxer could be hit 25% more over the course of the fight.
I don't think 15 rounds would shorten fighters' careers. Almost all of the 15 round fighters back in the day had nearly twice the amount of fights of today's boxers.
Mosley v. Hoya 1
Barerra v. Morales 1,2
Quartey v Hoya
Quartey v Vargas
Leonard v Hagler (Leonard ***** as doing)
Lewis v Mercer
Bowe v Holyfield
Mesi v his last two fights
The list is way too long, I agree bring back 15 rounders
{BrownBomber} 10-28-2004, 03:40 PM There Must Be A Big Reason They Stopped 15 Rounders. I Dont Know What It Is But It Must Be More Important Than Bringing Them Back Just For The Hell Of It. Just To Know What Could Of,im Fine With The Way They R Now. We Get To Enjoy A Fighters Career Longer.

Fighters fight less nowadays, actually.
I could be way off base here but I thought a serious contributing factor to the end of 15 round fights was when Mancini killed the Korean, Im sure there were other reason but as I recall this was one of them.
Hey 15 rounds everyone whos been boxing understand its not heathy.
Besides if 15 the heavys had have been heavier
Great 10-28-2004, 04:47 PM I don't think 15 rounds would shorten fighters' careers.

That's one incident. In fact, that's the only major fight i can remember where a fighter was killed from a bout that lasted longer than 12 round.
Sam Baroudi died after his fight with Ezzard Charles which lasted 10 rounds.
Jimmy Doyle died after his fight with Ray Robinson which lasted just over 8 rounds (he couldn't come out for the ninth).
Why not reduce bouts to 5 rounds? How can you determine a healthy length of a bout? God forbid, but it could happen in any round. Our best ways of preventing a ring death is a good ref and caring trainers who know their fighter's limit.

VERY TRUE IT COULD HAPPEN IN ONE ROUND. I THINK 12 ROUNDS IS FAIR,CAN U IMAGINE CHAVEZ-TAYLOR 1, GO 15 ROUNDS. THAT OUTCOME WOULD OF BEEN TRAGIC.

yea 1 more round taylor would have gotten hurt worse than he is right now
m00ks 10-28-2004, 08:15 PM Well, I would like it to stay at 12.
A fighter can manhandle a fighter for 12 rounds, imagine 15?!?
Also, I see fighters sucking it up, even though they are dead exhausted, in the 12th. Would they actually last 15 rounds now a dayz?
Last point,I don't know if teh fights would be as exciting in 15 as 12. Would the fighters preserve themselves early in the rounds?
I think 12 rounds is perfect and competitive.
bandito 10-28-2004, 08:16 PM you could bring back 15 rounders, but then there would be alot of boring fights. 12 is good enough. just cuz it's 15 doesn't mean more ko's!!
MetalVomit 10-28-2004, 08:17 PM yea 1 more round taylor would have gotten hurt worse than he is right now
HEALTH HEALTH HEALTH. as a fan, sure I would like 15 round championship bouts, but with health in mind, I am ok with twelvers.
If Chavez-Taylor I had gone 15 rounds, it wouldn't matter. He was stopped in the 12th, and rightfully so.

I would rather a boxer live longer then be entertained by an extra 9 minutes of boxing.

During struggle the boxer receives punches. There is an accumulation of effect from them. If damage (a wall of a vessel...) has achieved critical point, probability of reception of a fatal trauma (haemorrhage in a brain) the biggest. During three additional rounds the boxer can take a lot of punches and as Kim, career finish by tragedy. If not three last rounds, damage of a vessel has passed (if it was to 12 round - may be not) after fight, and all would be probably ок. Certainly, 12 roundes instead of 15 do not guarantee absence of traumas and death, but it undoubtedly will reduce amount of serious damages in a ring.
Annually in a ring some boxers die. Receive bad traumas even more. It is not necessary to increase this statistics. 12 roundes it is normal.
ispayder 11-01-2004, 07:56 PM A careful study was made by all the sanctioning bodies before championship fights were reduced from fifteen to twelve rounds. I am sure there is a rational explanation to this. Whatever that reason/s is/are, it must have been a very compelling reason or reasons for they all agree that twelve rounds are enough.

WELL SAID,THAT IS WHAT I HAD IN MIND. ALTHOUGH IN THE FUTURE THEY MIGHT WANT TO MAKE CERTAIN BLOCKBUSTER FIGHTS 15 ROUNDS. THAT WOULDN'T SURPRISE ME AT ALL. I DONT THINK THAT WOULD A BAD MARKETING IDEA. THEY SHOULD MAKE THE HEAVYWEIGHTS RIGHT NOW FIGHT LIKE 6 ROUNDS,MAYBE THAT WAY THEY CAN BE AS EXCITING AS THE OTHER WEIGHT CLASSES.
phallus 11-02-2004, 12:09 AM i think today's fights are 12 rounders for a reason, if we had 15 round fights we'd see guys falling over each other from exhaustion. People just aren't as tough as they used to be, it's part of evolution
MikeHunt 11-02-2004, 04:07 AM Does Randall "Tex" Cobb vs Larry Holmes ring a bell? This was the fight that caused Howard Cosell to retire from calling boxing matches and probably put the last nail in the coffin of 15 round fights.
