View Full Version : In desperate need of help with gloves. (PLEASE HELP!)
Okay, so basically I'm picking up gloves this friday and would LOVE a couple of questions answered. I'm about 5'7 and 145 pounds, and i'd say that i have somewhat smaller hands. I've been boxing for almost a year now with a beginner pair of 14 oz. Title Classic bag gloves that i picked up at the title website for cheap that feel somewhat big and have enough room in them for my hand to move around in.. I'm picking up a better pair of gloves online that i'm going to be mainly using for bag and mitt training, and i'm stuck between getting a pair of 12oz or 14oz. gloves. Is there a drastic difference between the 12oz and 14oz, and is there a preferred size of gloves i should be using for my weight and size? I read many threads, and some people say that the heavier the gloves, the more protection and the better the workout you'll get. Others say that the heavier the gloves, the more space there is in the glove, and that you dont get the full feel or effect of your punches when they connect on the bag/glove. Some say a bigger glove is more "lanky" as well... I want the size of glove that could give me a good workout and good feel where i can feel the full effect of my punches yet still give me the right support i need. Does this description lean more toward the 12oz or 14oz for me in your personal opinion? Also, to help me with my decision, what size gloves do you wear for mitt/bag training, and why? Thank you guys so much for reading, and i appreciate any help that i can get. Much love! :boxing:
50 views and no replies? please help me out guys..
JayCoe 04-16-2008, 08:08 PM I've read that when training many fighters prefer to have heavier than normal gloves in order to increase endurance.
punchDrUnK MONK 04-16-2008, 08:24 PM i personally had the exact same problem man. i switched to 12 ounce and it payed off . as long as u buy quality gloves with good protection (rival, winning, grant) 12 ounce should be enough to protect ur hand and also be a tighter more comfortable fit.
for anyone over 160 tho id say 14's
im 140 , bought 12 ounce rival ultra bag gloves, amazing protection, soft pillow like padding which never hurts the hand feels great. get those
kbpoetree 04-16-2008, 08:29 PM use the heavier gloves actually get 16oz gloves umm i have small hands also for sure the ones i have fit gr8 and feel good...they are..combat sports international....i have a pair of pro 10oz everlast gloves also..gr8..but they aint for trainen...
thanks alot for the responses, i really appreciate it. kbpoetree, what size gloves do you use for training? and punchdrunk monk, thanks for your detailed reply.. it really helped me alot with deciding! you definitely convinced me to get the 12oz's, and i'm leaning more and more towards them.. brandwise, i'm stuck between the rivals you recommended and a pair of these cleto reyes bag gloves. I tried a friend's grants at my gym, and didnt really like the feel. as for the winnings, i dont think i have the money for them, but i'll look more into it before i make my purchase. anyway, heres a pic of the cletos. they're from ringside, and the feature i like most that i've read about is the extra protection they have on the wrists, and the responsiveness of the impact of punches that you can feel.. also if anyone has had these before, a review would be sweet! thanks again guys!

first of all ringside makes the best gloves.
all 4 pairs of my gloves have been ringside and ive never gone below 16 oz.
you need gloves that are going to protect your wrists, hands, and the face and body of your opponent if you end up sparring. so you need 16 oz. atleast.
ones i bought a few months ago are the ringside mexican style sparring gloves and i love them they feel great, you can really get a good grip on them, they have a lot of padding, they go far up your forearm, and theyre lace up so its a comfortable fit.

i use these to hit the bag, do mitts and hit other people. theyll get the job done and youll feel good getting it done.
Thanks for the tip man, i'll definitely keep the ringside gloves in mind for sure. How do you think they would be room wise inside the glove for a person with a smaller hand such as myself? I've always been curious about the gloves that ringside made but havent really had a chance to try any on.. but your review has made me even more curious.. i'm still leaning toward the cleto reyes bag gloves that i posted from above, so for any of those whom have had experience with them, could you give me a mini review or rundown on how they were for you? i've been given alot of great choices.. if only i had a shop here to try them all on :(
The Victim 04-17-2008, 10:33 PM are all sparring gloves s'posed to b 16 oz? can it b less?
J_CON 04-17-2008, 10:45 PM Your weight would use 10 oz. but you should train with 16 oz

2swell k-wells 04-18-2008, 01:54 AM alot of boring threads about gloves lately...nothing to troll on.
LeftyRex 04-18-2008, 02:14 AM **** everlast. period.
skilgannon 04-18-2008, 03:21 AM trust me, you porbably dont have smaller hands than I do. Many girls and some 10 year olds have bigger or same sized hands as I do. I am about same height and weigt as you are. I have used everything from title, ringside, cleto, winning, twins, etc.. and with a good handwrap, your hand will feel right at home. THe only thing is the title ones are loose on us not because we have smaller hands but title gloves tend to have so much more handspace than almost every other glove around. I say shell out a bit more money and get better gloves that potect you better and last longer. Dont skimp on the cash with equipment because they are like an investment on your tools

im sure you are worrying a little too much about the size of your hands. any well made glove will fit your hand.
Cleto reyes is a very good brand also, although ive never tried them i hear very good reviews. i also hear theyre more of a "puncher's" glove, supposedly you can feel the punch a little more which probably just has to do with the way they manufacture the padding in the knuchles. either way reyes is a reputable brand that makes good products. if you want to try them out, go for it.
Dyl-G 04-18-2008, 03:32 AM are all sparring gloves s'posed to b 16 oz? can it b less?
it can, but why? sparring is about safety and learning. you dont want to break your sparring partners nose. go with atleast 16 oz. it is safe for your partner and vice versa. sparring isnt competition, there is no need for 12 oz and less gloves.
First off, thanks to everyone for the positive feedback, tips and recommendations.. i know it's probably annoying to always have these threads around, and i thank you all for taking me seriously.

Thanks for the tips man. And yeah, i've always wondered why my titles felt roomier than all the other brands i've tried on... thanks for clarifying! but yeah, i'll definitely dish out more money for a better quality glove. your size and weight comparison to mine also helped lots in your post. (Big thanks to punchdrunk monk for doing the same!) do you train with 12oz or 14 oz gloves?

Yeah.. youre right. I am worrying too much about the size of my hand. i guess it's my experience with my titles that got me paranoid of the other brands and their fits, but i'll stop worrying :) Thanks for the mini review on the reyes gloves, i think i'm gonna try these out cuz i've been really curious about them for a while. Do you think i should go with the 12oz or the 14oz for mitt/bag training? thanks again for the responses guys :boxing:
