View Full Version : Shin pain

Lately I've been having this pain in my right shin (near the bottom, front part - although it spreads all over after I exercise). I usually get it during jump rope, and throughout the rest of my workout, I feel it. It becomes worst after I finish my exercises; it spreads throughout the entire front part of the shin, and it becomes very painful to walk (and I feel it sitting down).

I am curious whether this pain would be considered shin splints. I don't remember having this pain before, even when I did a lot of running when I played footy. My right shin has a slight bruise on it (I can't see the bruise, but when I press on it, I feel pain).

If these are shin splints, can any of you recommend some things that I can do to get rid of them. Thank you.

Should I still carry on my training as normal (the exercises that require me to be on my feet), or should I wait to see what the doctor says?

Be careful mate because pain like that could be shin splints.....it sounds like a problem a mate of mine had and he had to do next to nothing for a couple of months to cure the problem.

Yeah that's why I'm beginning to address the problem more seriously now. I've never had pain like this, and by the mere sound of it, it feels like shin splints - like damn splints in my shins. And, from what I've heard, these things take a long time to heal completely. The problem is that the pain is getting progressively worse as well. It started hurting about a week ago when I would do jump rope, but not nearly as bad as say, today. It's been 2 hours since I finished my exercises and I still feel a slight nagging in that area. I want to get this shit fixed up as quickly as possible so that I don't have to lay off of my training for any time.

Thanks for the reply. That's a funny avatar you got there.

ok heres the deal..its def more or less shin splints..however could b a couple of things..first if it is shin splints aint much u can do but let it heal itself over time..the pain is there..but u know its not crucial enough while in movement..mainly just when u stop..now if u continue to work out hard the splints could turn in2 stress fracture..been there done that myself..yet again bout the only way to heal is rest...3rd thing and i cant think of the exact dr term for it..but basicly the lining around your calfs may not b able to expand anymore...i know a few people who this has happened with and the way to help that is getting your lining actually cut a lil..so the muscle can "breathe" so ta say...i bought some shin splint brases once...they are useless...

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it, man. Looks like it most likely is shin splints, and it looks like I'll have to see a doctor very soon. I'm still contemplating whether I should continue my training though...really hard decision to just stop your training, you all probably know this.

By the way, like you mentioned, the pain is much worse after stopping movement. During the exercise it is bad, but afterwards it is real bad. Don't know if that's common of shin splints or not.

it is common...i had them bad when running track in college..i'm not sure u want to waste a Dr visit..unless it is free for you...otherwise take anti inflammatory pills such as Motrin, etc...Oh and u can ice them afterwards also...just do not put heat on them b4 working out...i would cut out the jump ropes for a bit..or any other jumping movement workout..not completely..but def tone it down..do more cardia stuff with your arms and abs..such as fast pushups...sit ups..etc etc..turn up the intensity during those drills for a bit while decreasing your leg stuff a bit

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. Should I avoid running as well for this time period (I get the same pain from running as I do from the jump rope)? I do swimming twice a week, but if I cut it back on the running, I'll just increase the amount of times I swim so I don't lose a lot of cardiovascular exercises. My dad signed me up for a doctor visit (with a doctor that specializes in these areas) already since it is not expensive for us, so I'll see what he suggests. Thanks a lot for your advice kbpoetree.

...agreed with most responses. i always had them while running track last year and most of my teammates had it too and now slightly during jump roping. i always continued running and jump roping even tho it hurt (bottom of left shin - sometimes both - inside part). i doubt its anything serious, but since i dont really know how severe it is 4 u, den u have to b the judge if it would require a doctors visit...just ice it...15 min. on 15 min. off, etc.

I suffer from shin splints, a good way to test is to run your finger down the inside of your shinbone. If you can feel little lumps there, thats shin splints. Just ice them up like kbpoetree said. THats about the beat pain releif as well as taking brufen to reduce inflamation.

What type of surface are you jumping rope on?

Wanna make sure you've got good give under your feet. I use a rubber mat to jump rope on, and I only run on grass. If I run or skip on concrete, my shins ache for days.

i had it too when i was starting out, my coach told me that it was because i wasnt used to the stress of boxing, i tough it was bulls, but as the time went on it disappeared.

But dont trust that too much if the pain keeps getting worse just check with a doctor. Also try to massage it as strong as you can while showering or going to sleep i am sure you can feel little balls in there, hahaha it hurts but it will help to make them dissapear

I agree with David, i did have it for a while when i started boxing, i was skipping and i started getting a bad pain in my right shin by my ankle. This stayed with me for around 2 monthes, but i never thought it could be seious so i carried on doing everything the same. But i always got the pain again when i ran or skipped and it was around for a while. But, if your worried it could pay to see a doctor just to avoid injuries.

Hope i helped. :)

I didn't know about the bumps on the inner part of the shin before, and just now, I did what you told me, and I do feel those bumps. They kind of feel like the bumps down my back when I bend over, just obviously smaller. I jump with boxing shoes downstairs in my basement (which has carpet), but, when I used to go to the boxing gym (I am taking time off to prepare for AP and IB exams), I jumped on hard surface, but never felt the pain before there.

I started going to the boxing gym in mid-January, and went 4 days a week for exactly two months (at which time I unfortunately had to stop until summer to prepare for these exams), and never felt that kind of pain before there, at least not nearly as much as I feel it now.

My dad signed me up for the doctor visit soon, so I'll be looking into his suggestions.

Anyways, thank you all for your input. I really appreciate it.

If you are getting shin splints, and or just pain in your shins after doing a certian type of workout(Running, skip rope, anything pretty much with alot of bouncing / force on your legs), try walking on your heels for a few minutes. This will help relieve the pain.

Just visited the doctor today, and, although the x-rays didn't reveal anything abnormal, the doctor said that it looks like a stress fracture, and that I have to take off about a month. If I start to jump rope and run in a month and the pain still persists, then I have to visit him again.

How long did it take for your stress fracture to heal, kbpoetree?

I had a stress fracture of one of the metatarsals in my right foot earlier this year, it took about 4weeks before i could run on it for any sort of distance, then about another week before it stopped aching after, running , jumping rope etc..

Was a ****ing pain in the arse but all better now! Hopefully your shins will heal quicker if you try not too put to much pressure on them!

Hope this helps bro.

Thanks man. I'm going to substitute my running and jump rope with just more time swimming. I'll see how my shins feel in a month, like the doctor said.

You may have to look at your footwear for running. There are special trainers you can get to reduce problems with shin splints. I they're called motion control. I've heard shin splints are caused when your feet over pronate. I have no idea what that means exactly lol But I used to get shiun splint real bad and I've had to change my running style which has reduced the pain.
