A group of homeless men tied a noose around the neck of a New Zealand backpacker and raped, beat and burned him, a Brisbane court was told today.
Two 26-year-old men, a 28-year-old man and two men in their 40s are charged with attempted murder, torture, rape, kidnapping, assault causing bodily harm and robbery last Friday night.
None of the accused can be identified under Queensland law until they are committed to trial on the sexual offence.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Morrie Turner told the Brisbane Magistrates Court the men had tortured the backpacker in an abandoned building in Brisbane's CBD in an attempt to extract his bank PIN.
"It is not as if we are dealing with one of the outstanding members of the community, he is a danger to the community," Sgt Turner said opposing bail for the 26-year-old who has a criminal history for robbery and violence.
