So, for those that don't know, I'd been out of boxing for a long time. Actually been out of strenuous physical activity for a long time. Started back up again about 3 months ago. Been training hard and getting my fitness up as well as dropping about 10kg.

Anyways, been doing some regular one on one sessions with one of the trainers, just pad work and defensive stuff, but tonight he says lets spar. I was pretty happy to oblige, but slightly worried. He's a pro boxer and is 7-0-1,as well as having about 30 amateur fights under his belt.

Needless to say I'm now feeling beaten up, copped a ****ing beauty to the ribs, and they're sore as a bastard, hurts to breath. Took a while to get used to getting punched in the face again too. Worst part was I just couldn't hit him. He's too quick, too tight with his defense.

So i've kind of walked out feeling a bit down, it's not so bad if you know you can hit a guy back after he cracks you one, but i felt bloody useless in their against somone with a huge amount of experience, who is fitter and a lot younger than me (i'm 35).

Just thought i'd share.

No need to reply with the toughen the **** up emails. I've been aroung long enough. I can deal with the pain, i'm more embarreded about copping a flogging.

Next spar someone on your level. Give you back some confidence.

yeah, and thats the problem, my confidence feels down. I was walking out thinking about keeping elbows in tighter, moving my head more etc. All the defensive things focsing on not getting hurt. Normally I'd be walking around thinking about all the things I need to work on to hurt others

It's good mate. YOu'll feel that way, but keep sparring with pro's and you'll improve so much more quickly. And when you find you're starting to give him a bit of a challenge or put up a better fight, you'll spar an amateur and go through him like a knfie through butter. Don't feel bad, feel good about yourself. He's pro remember.

thanks guys, reading through that post again, it sounds like my ego was hurt more than anything. And i'm pissed off cos my ribs are smashed which means I wont be training at capacity for a coupla weeks.

But it was still good fun, and a good learning experience.

Yeah, sometimes a broken ego is more damaging. Fair play to you for your honesty, how are your ribs feeling now?

Yeah I'll drop into the forum. The bloke i sparred is also one of the trainers at my gym also. I'll PM you his boxrec link, don't want to post up his personal details. I got the record wrong too, its 5-0-1. Maybe just felt like he had more pro experience as he was beating me up. lol. He's fought on two Danny Green undercards, which was a great experience for him. Not like you get the chance to fight in front of big crowds on a world championship bill much in Perth. Hes a top bloke, and a good teacher
