View Full Version : Manny Pacquiao - the Next Superstar?
Rick Reeno 10-28-2004, 10:53 AM You can call featherweight Manny Pacquiao a lot of things, from short (he stands just 5’6”) to skinny (he tops the scales at weigh-in at 125 lbs), but whatever you do, just don’t call him yellow.
If there’s just one thing that Pacquiao has proven since hitting the limelight in June 2001 and gathering the attention of boxing aficionados with a series of impressive victories, it’s that the Filipino firebomber comes to fight, and he fights as hard as he hits, as recent opponents (and Pound-for-Pound contenders) Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Márquez can attest to. psychopath 10-28-2004, 10:51 PM Great article. The author seems to have made some serious research about Pacquiao.
Just wanted to add up for the readers that his second loss . . . a defense against 3k Singurat in Thailand was already a lost battle before he even climb the ring. Due to his rapidly expanding and developing body at that time, Pacquiao was way above the max allowable weight for that Flyweight bout. He was stripped off the title before the fight for failling to meet the required weight and that he was forced to climb the ring despite the decision because refusing to do that will prevent him from collecting full his intented purse.
A full week of starvation and sweating routines trying to remove that extra weight dehydrated him and weakened his body, reason why he went down to the canvas with just one solid body blow and never atempted to rise up. For what? wIN or loose he was already stripped off his WBC Flyweight title.
That's why after that fight he went up 3 divisions above where he established his name again.
JOM'S 10-29-2004, 12:32 PM For an avid Pac Fan like myself its very interesting to read articles regarding manny and how other people see him...
props to you PSO junior for adding accurate additonal info on the 3K fight....

No problem Bro. we share same interest so we will share goods points.
I agree with the author though, He is right. Manny despite his accomplishments is not a SUPERSTAR yet, his name can already be mentioned among the present greats but he still needs to cement it by fighting and defeating a couple of NAMED fighters . . . and this is exactly what Arum and his cohorts are trying to delay or prevent. ;)
Neuraxis 10-29-2004, 11:26 PM The next big thing has become the next big bust.
psychopath 10-30-2004, 01:59 AM The next big thing has become the next big bust.
:D What's going on is just a temporary delay or set back . . . . sooner or later Morales, JMM and MAB will run out of space and excuses not to settle the score with Manny. Only then can people judge Manny if he is for real.
I just wanted all these fights to happen.
abdiel2k3 10-30-2004, 02:09 AM is manny the next big superstar?
ofcourse
will he be a dominant one, one that is unbeatable
doubtful
but he is already without question a superstar

abdiel2k3 good and unbiased opinion, for me as an avid Pac Fan, I am hoping for him to be dominant, and for us Filipinos he was already a superstar 4 years back, but I also think he needs at least one more big fight to cement his worldwide superstar status....
abdiel2k3 good and unbiased opinion, for me as an avid Pac Fan, I am hoping for him to be dominant, and for us Filipinos he was already a superstar 4 years back, but I also think he needs at least one more big fight to cement his worldwide superstar status.... Your kidding right? Paquaio a superstar or the next big thing is a freakin' joke. The whole 126lbs. division is a joke, but competitive and it always will be when you are seeing the "best of the worse" it gives you an illusion that it's great fighters going up against great fighters. I never thought highly of Pacquaio not then and not now. I have seen Pacquaio fight several times before he even came to America and not much has changed although two things that really jump out about Pacquaio is his relentlesness, stamina and that left hand, but believe me when he loses again don't be surprise on how bad a beating he'll get or how quick the k.o. will be and it may not even be against JMM, MAB, or El Terrible.
JOM'S 10-30-2004, 01:29 PM RSL, I do understand if you don't believe that Pac is already a Superstar...
but what I don't understand, is how you can think that the featherweight division is a joke, my only guess is you don't know anything about boxing....

I don't know Pacman is pretty one dimensional. Like I've said before he is smaller, Corrie Sanders who is in better shape. It would appear that JMM figured him out after the first round. Whether the other two can or have is still to be decided though.

The only bust will be your hero when he faces Williams.

You're joking right? PFFFF Corrie ****ing Sanders??? I mean seriously....
How hard is it to figure an immobile southpaw with an injured left hand? Ya Ya excuse  You don't wanan belive it, your problem.

Apparently you missed the part about an inshape Sanders. The guy KD's JMM 3 times in a one round a fails to win the fight. JMM is going to easily beat Pacman in the second fight. He is one dimensional. Get over him.

Inshape or not Sanders couldn't move like Pac if his life depended on it. Maybe if you promise him a donut he'll flinch. The guy outboxed Pac rounds (3-12 or so people say) and still couldn't win.
One-dimensional? Maybe YOU can answer my question....WHERE THE **** WAS THIS STUPID ASSESMENT AFTER THE MAB FIGHT? Yes he was a one-dimensional against jmm but to dub him as purely one dimensional is ignorant.
JMM is gonna cry in the rematch. He couldn't hurt him then he wouldn't hurt him in Feb.

You can't compare how well boxers move when one weighs 100 poungs more than the other. Either way JMM is going to win.

No you still aren't getting it. Pacman would not be as quick as he is now if he were a heavyweight.

wtf?
u sarted by comparing pacs style to sanders
which is understandable in some aspects
but now your imagining pac as a HeavyWieght?
lmao thats just plain stupid and outta no where
as far as an injured left hand for pac
whos to say it wont happen again
its not like he hit him on the hip and ir got hurt or somethin odd like that
his hand got injurd from hiting JMM flush
if he does it again
his wil hand is gonna bwake again

Verbl_Kint 10-30-2004, 08:10 PM I don't understand why Sanders was even mentioned in this thread.
In any case, the rematch will eventually answer the question of who is the better fighter. I just hope that there won't be any more controversy.
I also hope that the fight pushes through. We can never tell what these promoters are thinking.

One dimensional fighters, big punchers, quick hands, one spectacular win, and then that's all she wrote.

JMM ducked and Pac's hand landed on his head. True he can hurt it again. But he'll most likely leave the power punches late in the fight just to be on the safe side.

JOM'S 10-31-2004, 06:16 AM We can speculate all we want, but only time will tell.
You got that right, we can only speculate and only time will tell, thats the very reason I am eagerly waiting for Pac-JMM II to happen....
And when that fight comes I am willing to bet all my moolah (points, not to much though) on Pac....
The debate over PacMan's skills package is a great one. Myself, I jumped on the PacWagon early on, thinking that this guy had the stuff.
A few minutes ago, I finished reviewing the Pac-Barrera and Pac-Marquez tapes and found myself less impressed, again. Pac's power is not questionable, nor his speed. His troubles realte to the overall lack of skill at "adjusting" to his opponent. Each time I view the Marquez tape, I am more convinced that Morales will smoke 'em.
I don't see him doing anything different with Morales than he did with Marquez, so The End for Pac will not be pretty. Meaning, he'll get into a very predictable pattern of head movements and lunging punches, that Morales will see .... in slow motion.
As much as Manny was a breath of fresh air, the wind is gonna' change direction with Morales. Pac will be reduced to the "contender" role that is probably best for predictable, unchangeable, and limited style.

Munn I think you jump in and out of the bandwagon on a per fight basis so I am not loosing hope on you to join the bandwagon again after Pac's next fight...
For now predictable 1-2s and limited style but in no way unchangeable, so be ready to be surprised next time Manny fights either JMM or EM...

I guess I was right, no way the feather weight division is a joke with guys such as JMM, Barrera, InJin, Harrison & Pac at the fore front, only big blow for the feathers was EM moving to SF, but the feathers is still deep in talent plus the best Bantams are going up in weight to add more depth like Larios & Nedal Hussein, not to mention Guzman....

jomapac .... Not really a bandwagon jumper, just less impressed with each viewing of those fights. Especially Marquez, who started to counter very effectively through all mid-late rounds, while Pac was still lunging toward Marquez, not knowing what else to try. Once Marquez started that head movement, Pac was stymied.
I'm very interested (not sarcastically, really) what you think Pac might bring to the Ring in his pending bout, which might be different from the style that has worked very well for him in most of his fights leading up to Marquez? I'm sure veryone agrees, including Roach, that Pac must do something different.

I'm with mooks here and would also like to ask how you can get less impress by watching the MAB fight again....
Answering your question, Manny has improve immensely from 4 years back to present, before he was a human washing machine and just throws bunches of body punches on circular motion leaving a wide opening in the middle for counter, but recent fights show he don't do this anymore definetly on instruction from Roach, one thing good about Pac is he is still young and willing to learn and he respect and listen to Fredie, I'm sure Roach will have a game plan for Manny, and I would agree with you that Pac has to come up with something different more side to side movement will do wonders, and like what I told you earlier be ready to be surprisedand I am willing to bet on it.....
