Anyone in here ever freeze up in sparring? Im talking like everything goes out the window and you just feel like a human punching bag and whenever you try to punch it seems like something is wrong and you end up getting countered back? I almost quit in the middle of sparring due to this but I in all honesty didnt want to embarasse myself infront of the whole gym. I felt like a idiot and felt like all my hard work and time and money has gone to waste. I have a fight coming up on Friday and I dont think im goona show up. I really feel worthless boxing wise because Im obviosly not that consistant and what if I have one of these moments in a fight? I really care about my health and Im sure i cant keep having one of these type of days again and again unless I want to have a straight nose and be able to remember my friends names when im older. Is this really something your suppose to accept as a part of boxing? I dont really think that a good solid boxer would have these type of problems but share your thoughts guys

I'm going to come out and say it before anyone else does;

you're being a *****.

Acouple days of you getting punched in the face won't **** your brain up.

Besides, the ol' 1-2 helped at the club, right?

Anyway, dont be a *****. Boxing's a tough man's sport. It's not for everybody.

yes its true boxing is a tough sport, but on the other hand you shouldnt be leaving a spar session feeling like you have a concussion. either you went into the ring with someone much better who didnt take it easy, you just were off your game etc. if its a once in a while thing its ok, but you shoudlnt be feeling like that on the regular.

well let me tell you something....i had recently gotten into a street fight against a much bigger dude that knew how to fight/box. he caught me with a str8 right after i slipped his jab and i was immediately dazed. i tried to bob and weave a little but sorta froze up after a couple moves and got caught with some more hooks. and when i started swinging back for some reason i had no pop in my punches, winging some weak arm punches.... plus i wasnt even ready to fight at the moment, he was the one that was all hype.

only thing i walked away from that fight was knowing i could take some good barefisted punches and next time sit down on my punches some more.

It wasnt a club for the 1000 time! Those kids that tried to jump me are just staright up street brawlers with no skill but only power. After sparring some people came up to me and asked me if I was ok and that they were surprised i am still on my feet and that I didnt get koed. I felt like a idiot after hearing people say things like.

I think what you need to do is to get yourself into the right mindset.

I remember once I was on my way to the gym and had an argument with someone. When I got there I just couldn't get into it so I left. Most people probably have the odd day where they can't get into it.

Try reading about past experiences of other fighters. Remember that lots of fighters have fears and psychological problems. Tyson, Bruno, Seldon, McCall, Bowe, Golota. All of these guys were less than mentally perfect yet in the 90s they were among the best heavyweights. If these guys can get themselves in the mindset to win world titles, then you can get past your current worries.

Remember that Cus quote, about the coward and the hero being the same on the inside? I think there's a lot of truth in that. The other guy might be just as scared as you. The guy with the most fear isn't always the one who loses.

I was watching an old video at the weekend, showing Tyson crying before an amateur fight...lots of people feel fear, you just have to find the way through it, or find a way to project it onto your opponent, or turn it into motivation and aggression.

You are mentally weak, and you are a bully. This is just another example of a bully getting shut down by the first person that stands up to them.

You need to stop complaining about EVERYTHING, and do something about it.

We don't care that you put on weight because you cant stop eating cookies. We don't have any sympathy. Unlike you, most of us actually bust our ass to stay on weight. When we get a whooping in the gym, we figure out what we did wrong and bust our ass trying to fix it.

We don't come on here and ***** and moan about how we froze up and felt like a punching bag.

Boo ****ing hoo. If you don't like feeling like a punching bag then do something about it.

How are you a bully? Bumping into someone then knocking their hat off their head instead of saying excuse me. Then punching them in the face. How are you a bully? Going around picking fights with people on the street. Always talking down on people, always being a disrespectful prick.

Then after all that, you have the gall to come on here and ***** and moan and expect us to feel sorry for you.

I don't feel sorry for you. You deserve an ass whopping. You are a strait up punk.

Say what ever you want. I know how hard I bust my ass in the gym, that is enough for me. I don't need to complain when I have bad days. I don't need to complain when I put on weight. I don't need to complain when I injure my thumbs.

Unlike you, I am confident in my abilities. I am respectful of the opinions of others, and I am willing to help those having trouble.

However, I am not willing to tolerate bullies like you. People that are disrespectful. Or people that complain about their problems instead of trying to fix them.

Now if you want to stop being a ***** and start being a man, I am more than happy to help you.

Otherwise, go complain somewhere else.

Theres a difference between maoning and asking people if they have the same problems. I think you would be more of a BULLY by stalking someone on a internet forum and reading off and trying to diss another persons posts but ok whatever i guess in your view im a bully for having a rough day in training.

It's about ring experience. Was the kid you were in with alot more experienced? Did he land any clean punches that made you fuzzy?

It just happens, people have bad days. I've been fighting over 15 years and there are times when I go into the gym and I will spar with green guys and they will land almost every shot they throw at me.

I am a very slick fighter and I do not get hit alot. So it's very fustrating when a brand new guy in the gym lands on me, not once, but multiple times. You just have bad days sometimes, it happens to all of us. The only thing you can do is take your lickings and come back the next day.

Don't let it bother you to much.

Yea he has about 4 years experience but on good days I can hang with him or atleast do alot better than today. Afew of his punches buzzed me and were really hard punches but I just kept punching and moving around with him.

Here's my philosophy on the matter:

People here have said "stop being a *****" ignore them, you're not being a *****, you're being a human. Our natural mindset is not to get hurt. Problem is, in a fight if you're not willing to get hit then you're not going to fair too well, you'll get scared and you'll then focus on not getting hit and not doing the damage, this will bring on the opposite of what you want - meaning, you get hurt. Exactly what you said happens would happen, you freeze up. The old saying "fight or flight" seems suitable. From what you've said, I doubt it's ability, it's the fact you don't want to get hurt, meaning, your mindset is the problem. Worse thing about this is it's hard to change. But here, whilst everyone on here calls you a ***** and telling you to man up let me share a little fact with you, when Mike Tyson was still an amatuer he would sometimes cry before a match, he was scared. In fact, there's a video of him crying outside before a fight, he went in and set a record, knocking him out in 8 seconds. Holyfield always admitted of the fear he felt before a fight. People get scared, people don't want to get hurt, but you have to overpower this with determination. Instead of looking at it like "I don't want to do it, I will get hit" think "I have to do it well if I don't want to get hit". Get me?

Boxing isn't for everyone, some people don't like to fight, some people do but don't want to get hurt themselves etc. Ever heard of the Knights Templar? Historical elite troops who would often slaughter those who were seen to be undefeatable. The reason Saladin feared them was because they acknowledged they could die, they therefore let go of the fear of death. That doesn't mean they were suicidal, just means they fought to survive but knowing they could die. Remember this, you fight to not get hit, but acknowledge that you can, and most likely will, get hit and it will most likely hurt, but move on. That's really the best advice I can give you, your overwhelming concern is your problem. Training wont fix that. Only yourself and/or experience may.

man i dont understand all the things you wrote but you should fight, the more you fight you get better. i have a friend that lost his first 8 fights all in a row and believe it or not hes a great boxer now just from gettin all that experience fightin every week. if you let fear keep you movin from the fights i dont think you gonna get better doing that.

here in Mexico not showing up to a fight is like the worst thing in the world and its really disrespectful to your trainer and your team.

I agree with others, you are giving up too soon and not accepting that you need to stick with it and work harder. Getting smacked around and not having all the tools is part of learning, you pick up things and sparring more will improve your skills because you will know how to react and in a calmer and more calculated way. Stick with it and you will improve. Anybody can punch a bag, but when you can move and be slick out there, that is something special, and it takes time.

Dont give up man, your "freezing up" could also be lack of focus it happens to me sometimes when im sparring, i'l be in the ring but thinking about something else and litteraly forget what i was doing and freeze up for a few seconds until i clue in theirs someone trying to punch me in the face. When you wanna try and do is get in the right mind set, get motivated think about what your doing have a game plan and only have BOXING on your mind. i started doing that and the freezing up ended.
