I think it depends on what you are after...if you want scenic trips i'd say tropical coast of queensland (great barrier reef etc) and/or the northern territory and all its national parks.

If you want night life and to hang out with the other 10000000 british back packers, then sydney or melbourne cbd is the place to be

just been to sydney and that was a cool place to visit.

cairns is good for the reef

brisbane is good cause its close to the gold coast and sunny coast.. noosa etc and its a decent sized place

darwin was good for its zoos/croc farms etc but the place is a ****hole

ive heard bad things about canberra.. heard adelaide is pretty cruisy.. perth is a nice enough place..

infestacide's got the right idea.

Brisbane's a good party city - pretty big place with lots of entertainment & good beaches, especially if you are willing to travel down the coast a little.

Cairns is an experience - don't go November to Feb - too bloody hot, & most of the beaches are shut down due to man-o-war jellies, but the beaches just outside the city are incredible, & travel just up a little & you are in tropical rainforest country.

On a serious note.

I would definetely go ligon street. Restaurants are culture are second to none.

Then cairns.

Then gold coast.

Then Tasmania.
