If the park weren't covered in snow, and if I had something left in my legs, I'd be out there trying to emulate his recent freekicks. It's mesmerizing how he gets that knuckling motion all on the end of the shot, leaving the keeper unable to read how it's going to cut.

It just occured to me that 'knuckleball' is a baseball analogy that you folks may not understand how to apply to footie.

I used to practice taking free kicks every night. The way I used to do them was on the outside of my right, hard and low. Or I would try and do the Beckham and get it just under the bar right next to the post. I used to say that was the perfect free kick. :D

"Knuckleball" is a way of throwing a baseball using your knuckles to grip it instead of the ends of your fingers. You can throw it so it looks like it's going straight without any spin at first, but then suddenly it dips and moves to the outside.

Ronaldo I think is getting his knee farther over the ball than for a normal shot, hitting straight through but lifting his heel and turning his toe inward in the follow through.

You have to hit it hard to make it work, and there has to be no spin at all on it as it leaves your foot.

So did I. There's nothing like goofing around in the park taking free kicks all night. Beckham is amazing in his accuracy, consistency, the degree of bend he puts on his shots, and the way he can regularly get it just over the wall and down.

But technically I think what Ronaldo is doing is more difficult both to strike and for a keeper to save.

He's spinning it with the outside of his foot. This one was perfect because of the poer and accuracy, but it's not the same kind of strike Ronaldo has been hitting. Ronaldo strikes straight through, the objects is to disguise the motion that sets in late

I suppose when you're young you're gullible, eh. I was always rubbish at football. They would have needed to invent a truly magic pair of boots to have made me any good.

No doubt his free kicks are awesome but lets not forget he doesn't do it enough on a consistent basis, they rarely come off but when they do I can't help but not drool.

His technique is awesome, I heard that he kicks the ball where the valve is (to pump the ball) to apply all the swerve and dip on the ball.
