I am not a guy that goes around telling people that i box or do other martial arts. Only when people ask me sort of directly, so what sports do you do, i will tell. Last week 2 of my former colleagues walked in to the gym planning to join and they saw me, and were very surprised. They signed up.

I have trained in very disciplined gyms around asia where showing of is not tolerated by the trainers and were you will not dare to question them. Showing of will put you in the ring with pros and it will not be a pain free experience. They do that just to shut you up.

Do you guys look for every opportunity to tell people or you also just do your own thing?

It's even better to put on all your sweats and training shoes and tell people you're going to the club. They just don't get it.
I'm also pretty reluctant to tell a lot of people that I box. I don't know if you've experienced it yet, but this is a good way to get a lot of unnecessary macho bullsh*t to come out of the woodwork from guys who think they have something to prove against you.

As I'm not attending a gym at the moment I can't comment. But I like the no-showing-off-attitutde you mentioned in your post. I abhor showing-off, even if I do well at something I generally never tell people unless asked. I can't stand it when I hear other people bragging that I know I don't want to go down that road myself. When I do eventually join a gym the only people that will know will be my wife and close friends. I mean, I'll be joining the gym so I can get myself even fitter and hopefully train to be a competent boxer NOT so that I can brag and boast.

yeah I don't tell anyone.
some of my closest friends don't know I do Boxing.

Only my Brothers and mum know I do it.

I just tell people I go to the gym.

People don't need to know what the hell I do.
I learn to box for myself, to strengthen and improve myself.
I am not boasting about it, so people can try and pick the odd fight with me.

if people ask i tell them. i tend not to try to bring it up in big groups because i dont want people to think im some macho idiot who boxes to beat people up etc. if the people know personally and it comes up ill tell them. but i try not to make it a point to tell people i dont know too well.

Yeah they do. They can't comprehend how an "old man" can do it. The kids have no perception of age, i'm 22 years old for ****s sakes. I think they think i should be playing lawn bowls and drinking peppermint tea.

It blows there minds to think i might visit a nightclub every so often and train in an exciting sport 5 nights a week.

I've been trying to get a video to some of the lads for weeks! haha. Just to shut them up.

i was your age when i started boxing, my grandma was so worried. She tried to talk me out of boxing but it didn't help much. She wanted me to play soccer. How is your family about you and boxing?

As of yet I don't box. I understand the requirements for boxing and feel that in order to maintain dignity I need to get stronger and fitter before I join a club. Whenever I went to the gym and people asked why (can you believe people ask why you go to the gym now?!) I would reply "oo because I want to get into boxing"...Now I don't, now I just say "to get healthy". I'm the type of person who wants to learn, read and study what it is i'm getting into, that aside, I found an interesting book on Mike Tyson aswell. My mate let me used his amazon account (he gets next day) to get some boxing training books etc, letting me know what i'm in for and so I could get ready over the long University holidays so I could just join when I get back. People asked what i'd got, mate told them and they initially replied with "oh that's pretty cool, if there was any sport for you it'd be boxing" and I was quite relaxed about it and happy. Later on the little jibes come on, basically "boxers are psychos" "nuts" "have no brains" "violent" and the only reason people ever want to learn it is so they can beat up other people...So, it's like, I don't even properly do it yet and people have judged me. Truth is, in modern-day-Britain boxing is not seen to be a respectable sport. They think it's all about fighting and hurting, not even knowing that amatuer exists, thinking it's all heavyweight pros who knock each other out. So, that's my story so far, I can't even imagine what people say to you lot who have been doing it for years.

I learnt this the hard way by telling some folks I boxed, and a load of ****ers from my school turned up.. Ffs.. No more bragging for me.

ive never found anyone tried to fight me or bother me because i box. im also
6'2 and 197. im guessing most of the smaller guys when they say box get a lot of shit because people think you have to be big to box etc.
