With Hopkins and De La Hoya drawing near, I can't help but wonder about its place in history before the fight has even started- I was making an argument to a friend that simply due to the fact that De La Hoya is as popular as he has been that it is one of the ten most hyped fights EVER- any thoughts?

Historically it might end up being the biggest non heavyweight pay per view as far as sales goes. It would be more historic if Delahoya wins then if Hopkins wins. Almost all of the media have picked Hopkins to win by late knockout plus if Delahoya wins he would of won titles in six weight divisions. All Hopkins gains really is the 10 plus million dollars. If he wins people will either say he was supposed to or he just beat a blown up lightweight. If he loses then his career would be second guessed by alot of people.

Historically you are right. It will be historically important because of how many buys it will generate.

we all keep saying this though..
so a 3rd opinion should be : some think dlh is a competitive matchup for any middleweight and if b-hop KOs him he should go down in history
now if hopkins gets beaten then dlh has beaten a fighter who has only lost twice and not for over 5 yrs.regardless of age this is still an achievement
so for me and many other fans they will both gain by winning
and not just money

Oh I know Hopkins is still one the best middleweights ever win or lose and I think this a very competitive match. It won't surprise me if Delahoya wins a close but still convincing decision but I still take Hopkins by close decision though.

it means De La Hoya can't take an elbow punch
