i think its important.. its the closest thing to sparring.. but i shadow box as if im literally boxing someone... i dont go through the motions... i move, fast, lost of lateral movement, combinations... keep moving... i think its real important.... dont just stand there practicing slow punch combos

i know what you mean but i do one on one with my coach 3-4 times a week any way and i always pretend that he is my opponent so i hit him hard something you cannot do with shadow boxing

i box the heavy bag also as if i box someone...

It not too bad if you dont have to do too much of it however At my gym if we do shadow boxing im usually one of the first to complain as we always seem to do it for ages.

Yup, same as me too. I like to use shadow boxing as a spar substitute as I'm not a member of a boxing gym...................yet!

I find shadow boxing in front of a mirror beneficial. You get to see what an opponent would see, you can see yourself with your own eyes and check if there are any weaknesses in your movement etc. That's something that sparring and hitting the punch bag can't offer.

I guarantee you that you're not shadow boxing correctly if you're not in a gym.. and you're probably picking up some shitty habits.

Shadow boxing is very important, it's boring 'cause it takes imagination lots of focus...your skills become more mature!:boxing:

Right now I don't like it because I've only been boxing for 2 months and it feels too repetitive because I only perform punches that I think my technique is good enough for (like only jabs and slipping). Hopefully when I practice more and more other punches, the shadowboxing will become more varied, and I'll look forward to it.

Nonetheless, I still think it is very important, so I make sure I work on it when I work out.

i think you need it, its a good way to practice your technique and build some speed.

and remember what Cus D'Amato said about shadow boxing

"Cus had a problem when fighters only approached shadowboxing as a warming-up exercise, which was literally all of 'em! What they do is - they simply go through the motions, f*** around doing f*** all, stab at the air, before moving onto the so-called real workout on the bags. But once you are in the ring, you will be confronted by different opponents who will use different styles and techniques. If you've already seen this guy, played these situations out and predicted your reactions as you shadowboxed, that puts you one step and one punch ahead of your opponent. Think in terms of combination punching - it's how big, heavy guys like Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson got their hands moving quick as f*** and their combinations flowing like f*** - without the resistance of a bag or the impact of hitting an opponent to affect your punches, it's shadowboxing that is the time to concentrate on the importance of throwing more than one shot at a time. Taking this approach will create a good habit of punching in combinations. It will also help you to become more fluid in your delivery and create better balance between your footwork and hand activity. Do not throw a meaningless punch, without an opponent to fend off or a bag to react to, you have the time and clear thinking to concentrate on the punches you throw. Throwing a lazy jab or a slapping right hand out doesn't help you in the ring, so do not do it in training."

shadowboxing is essential. high work rate, emulate real fight situations precisely with good form. That sums it upp.

it is extremely important, jake la motta never used a speed bag in his whole life, he got his hand speed from shadowboxing. I stopped doing it for a while and my form just turned to shit mush.

I do it all the time, even at home, constantly. I get very frustrated sometimes because i'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to technique/ head movement, which is why I never shadow box in the mirror, only when I want to check a punch like to see if I'm turning my jab over, if my hook is tight enough, etc.

The people who usually love it are the ones who cant box very good with an opponent in front of them so they look good punching the air in front of them lol

Yeah, you're probably right. Not having a trainer living in my house obviously has its disadvantages! I'm trying to get myself as fit as I can before I join the gym in my town. Don't want to join up as a unfit 34 year old, I've got too much pride for that. Shouldn't be too long now, I think my leg, which I broke a while back, is finally regaining strength and I'll be starting to add running to my daily excercise routine.

Do you run a lot for conditionning?

I signed up a time a go and was not able to do all the things , because i was wasted at that time, so i did lots of running or jogging, and it is very good right now!

Not being funny Peek, but my thread actually mentioned that I DON'T run at the moment. When I do it will be for stamina & fitness, for the exact reasons you mentioned - so that I WILL be able to do all the things. I'm 34 and I imagine most of the guys at the gym will be younger than me so I want to show the whipper-snappers there's life after 30! Lol!!

Indeed! There really is something missing from most peoples shadowboxing. As it states above, most people view it as an ancillary exercise. Just something to warm up with or play around thinking more about looking good with silly moves and forgetting to bother with proper form.

Shadowboxing really is the next best thing to sparring. It can instill the perfect technique in your punches and keep you moving fluid with the combinations you are practicing. You can practice the fine details of the finer points of your form or combo's.

As 'Reed' said, you've got to practice keeping perfect form but still do everything as if you are fighting. Throw all the combinations, keeping as swift as you can while really focusing on using extra defense, head movement and constant lateral motion.

I find nothing better than working up a hard sweat with skipping then moving into the rounds of shadowboxing to practice and perfect my moves, and what I want to instill in myself for greater fighting ability, then taking that onto the bags and into sparring. Just moving straight into bag work or even sparring is quite simply a bad way to train. You have to learn how to learn! The best way is to take it step by step and to progress in a step by step manner. You stick with the fundamentals/technique/basic work always, while using that as a foundation to step up the rest of your training and progress .... errr .... progressively. :lol1:
