GhosT^x0 06-09-2003, 05:04 PM oOoOoOoOooohhhh The gauntlet hath been thrown down. Bluecifer 06-09-2003, 05:07 PM CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The emphasis for the Civil War this year is on civility. There's not a lot of trash talk going on between the Oregon State Beavers and the Oregon Ducks this week and the posturing is at a minimum. Both sides say they just want to win. Maybe that's because there's not as much at stake this season as there has been in years past: no Pacific-10 Conference title, no Rose Bowl berths and certainly no shot at a national championship. "We just want to let our actions speak for themselves on the field," Oregon State linebacker Erik Tuma said. "That's why we're really not talking about it." Both teams are 7-4 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-10, jockeying for a better bowl invitation. A berth is possible for both Oregon and Oregon State -- no matter the outcome of Saturday's game -- because the Pac-10 has contractual agreements with six bowl games. "We're not used to being in this kind of situation so it's kind of new to us," Ducks cornerback Steven Moore said. "But we'll still play hard and try and get the W. We'd rather be in a better situation but we just have to battle back." Two years ago it was much different. Both teams were 9-1, with Oregon ranked No. 5 and Oregon State ranked No. 8. The Beavers won 23-13 to finish with their best season ever, although their Rose Bowl hopes were dashed when Washington beat Washington State in the Apple Cup. Then last season, the two teams had a lengthy hiatus before the Civil War because of television. Oregon's hopes for a national title, as well as Joey Harrington's pursuit of the Heisman Trophy, hyped the game to a fever pitch. Oregon emerged the victor, 17-14, to clinch the Pac-10 title. But while there's not the same frenzy this season, it is still the Civil War and bragging rights are good for a whole season. "You see those guys around all year," Oregon State defensive end Bill Swancutt said. "And you don't want to be the one to have to say "We lost the last one."' The Beavers have an advantage in that the home team has won the past five Civil Wars. And Oregon won't have Onterrio Smith, its high-profile tailback. Smith had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee this week and is out until the Ducks' bowl game. Smith, who may opt for the NFL draft next year, finished his season with 1,079 yards and 12 touchdowns in nine games. Freshman Terrence Whitehead and sophomore Ryan Shaw will replace him. The Ducks' defense, however, will have to contend with Beavers tailback Steven Jackson, the nation's fifth-leading rusher with an average of 136.6 yards. Jackson ran for 230 yards in last Saturday's 31-21 victory over Stanford. It was his third 200-plus rushing game of the season, an Oregon State record. With 1,503 rushing yards this season, he needs 57 more yards to surpass Ken Simonton's single-season school record set in 2000. Not only to the Beavers and the Ducks share identical records, they have novice quarterbacks who have had to fill considerable shoes in their first seasons as starters. Jason Fife took over this season for Harrington with mixed results at times. Last Saturday in Oregon's 42-14 loss to Washington, Fife was pulled for a time in favor of backup Kellen Clemens. But coach Mike Bellotti maintained the switch was by design, and Fife would remain the Ducks' starter for the Civil War. Overall, Fife has thrown 23 touchdown passes with seven interceptions, with at least one TD in each of his 11 starts. Derek Anderson, who took over for Oregon State passing leader Jonathan Smith, has had an inconsistent season. But he did help rally the Beavers in the come-from-behind win over the Cardinal with a fourth-quarter scoring pass to James Newson. It was Anderson's 20th TD pass, tying him with Smith for the OSU single-season record. "I've just got to keep playing, really, and learn from my mistakes," he said. Like their quarterbacks, the two teams have had up-and-down seasons. Oregon State, which opened with four wins, has won three of the last four after a three-game Pac-10 losing streak. Oregon, meanwhile, has lost four of their last five after a six-win start. So the Civil War is important this season for a much different reason that in the recent past: Both teams want to at least get this win in an otherwise lackluster year. And that's why neither team really wants to provide the other with any added incentive with bulletin board fodder. "We win this game, we're running full sprint into the bowl season instead of limping," Fife said. "It amplifies our attitude and our wanting to succeed this week." Copyright 2002 Associated Press.
