View Full Version : Whats your Favorite Boxing Style?
ELPacman 10-26-2004, 08:06 PM We all know styles make fights, and it makes a boxer as well of course. Does your favorite style match your favorite boxer? I can't imagine someone saying they like JMM just cause he might have heart and all though his style is boring as hell. Similar boxers such as Marco Antonio Barrera is a cool boxer, though for the most part he's a laid back counter puncher who will now and then trade shots or do a brief assault. He's still boring to me. Tyson was a favorite of mine, that keep going forward, no fear, take a shot and deliver many more harder, and Manny is the modern of Tyson IMHO. How about yours?
borikua 10-26-2004, 08:08 PM i like the style of my fav fighter Felix Trinidad, always moving foward and looking for the KO..
Dr.Depravity 10-26-2004, 08:10 PM I like Hopkins, hes technically sound, great defense and hands are almost always up.
dbacksdude1z 10-26-2004, 08:10 PM i also enjoy watching the magnificent tito at work

i like the patient fury that Marco Antonio Barrera uses.
hollister 10-26-2004, 08:15 PM I liked the style that Marciano used, or more probable, the sheer will and determination he displayed. I also like the style that Ray Robinson and Cassius Clay used, as well as The hit man's style, which wasn't that much different from Clay's. Oh, and I meant Hit man Hearns, not Hit man Hatton lol
Binks 10-26-2004, 09:15 PM I like the style Mike Tyson used becuz it fits me. I am short for the hw divison just like him, so I think it would fit me well if I learned how 2 use his style and something of my own effectivly

Yeah, if I boxed, I'd definitely use Manny's style. It's a crowd pleaser which means even if you have a cruddy record, you might still get payed well and nice fights just cause people want to see you fight :) I'd definitely upgrade my defense though. Manny leaves himself exposed when he takes his shots, thus he basis most of his defense on his mobility. Of course if your wearing $1 dollar socks, your mobility that is your defense is gone :D For an example, of how this works, watch vs Barrera, then watch vs Marquez. He was one bouncing little tiger :D

Nice avatar bro..
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 10-26-2004, 09:50 PM Favorite Boxing style would have to be Julio Cesar Chavez,
Relentless agression, only step back to evade your shot and come back with a lead right, and dont stop throwing. A real Machine with stamina that seemed unreal.
BTW i personally enjoyed JMM's style against manny. It was awesome it looked like he was trying to see what manny was a bout to do and he would land first.
Binks 10-26-2004, 10:40 PM thanks, is that a pic of u knocking that guy out in fightnight?
oldgringo 10-26-2004, 10:46 PM James Toney.
phallus 10-26-2004, 10:51 PM Defintely James Toney! You said it O.G.!
jack_the_rippuh 10-26-2004, 11:24 PM I like some things about Mayweather style....The shoulder roll is brilliant..
whdempsey 10-26-2004, 11:31 PM James Toney.
Amen, brother, amen. I love guys like Toney who just love to fight. You can see when they're fighting that they're just having a good time hurting the dudes in front of them. Like Dempsey, Marciano. The difference is Toney's just as slick as he is violent and most guys who have his mindset just wanna throw punches.
I like all styles, but I love that James Toney and Mayweather Jr. shoulder roll and I also like Nacho Beristain's style. I'd love to be able to do Pernell Whitaker's way of just "standing in the pocket" and not be able to get hit, then again it's more of his athletic ability that allows him to pull that off. I just like styles that are based out of counterpunching.
JOM'S 10-27-2004, 03:08 AM before I used to like gracefull fighters that after frustrating their opponents then Knock them Out when they least expect it like ALI, SUGAR RAY LEONARD, TOMMY "the hitman" HEARNS...
but now I tend to like guys who wants to fight and goes directly for the KO like Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Manny "Pac Man" Pacquiao, Trinidad.....
I have never seen a full fight of Erick Morales but the few clips I saw him, I like his style of fighting fast hands and always ready and willing to go into war....

Sir_Jose 10-27-2004, 03:15 AM The Shoulder Roll is my all time favorite style to watch.
James Toney is a master at it. Toney stand right in front of you and you wont be able to hit him, but he'll be countering you all day long.
Great 10-27-2004, 04:14 AM Tysons brutal style of boxing I always liked.
Ivansmamma 10-27-2004, 04:26 AM RJJ and Ali style.
Great 10-27-2004, 04:36 AM Offensive Joe Louis, Dempsey, Foreman. These guys never avoided fight on a ring and their fights always were fascinating.
jabsRstiff 10-27-2004, 07:56 AM Guys like Marvin Hagler & Mike McCallum....
They took you apart. They boxed without moving too much. Fired excellent, hard combos with both hands. Fired off of two of the better jabs I've seen.
Rarely lost their cool...& had granite chins.
jack_the_rippuh 10-27-2004, 11:53 AM HAHAHAHA! Did you see Round Twelve of Roy Jones Jr. vs. Mike McCallum? Jones just freakin' nicked him with a punch to the chin and he fell..to me that took a way from his chin. I'll give you credit for saying Marvin Hagler he had a hard chin..
P.S. I'm suprised no one mentioned like Chris Byrd's style...he's a pretty interesting fighter to me..
jabsRstiff 10-27-2004, 11:56 AM jack...
IDIOT...
McCallum was almost FORTY, you *****.
Not to mention...he was a natural 154lber.
You have a lot to learn.... A WHOLE LOT !
jabsRstiff 10-27-2004, 11:59 AM Jack.....
You have probably been watching boxing for about two years.
If you've been doing so longer....you should be ashamed, because ALL of your posts are RIDICULOUS.
You are wrong, 99% of the time...& have the most childish, ill-informed opinions on this board.
You make the Pac/Klit fans look like geniuses.
At least they don't step outside of their little boxes & debate about **** they don't know.
jack_the_rippuh 10-27-2004, 12:03 PM So what...Roy Jones Jr. was almost 28 when he beat up Mike McCallum and he too started his career off as a junior middle weight...
But answer me this...did you see the knock-down? Jones's glove grazed his face...I don't care if you're almost 77...you don't fall from **** like that..and besides who told the guy to get fat. He should stayed at the weight he started at, like Hagler..
oldgringo 10-27-2004, 12:17 PM Lets give McCallum a break on that one. If it were some bum that KD'ed him than I could see the argument but the man did have a very solid chin for the better part of his career...not to mention the most sinister nickname I've ever heard.
I am a short guy, 5'9" 235lbs, so my style has to be like Tyson's.
realheavyhands 10-27-2004, 02:02 PM peekaboo styles cuz you can punch out of it like no otha.. tyson, frazier, marciano, dempsey, tua, cotto
Deejay 11-15-2004, 08:16 PM I like kostya tszyu's stalking style. Left hand pawing and measuring while the right hand is ****ed and ready to unload the fury. Like the way he cuts off the ring and when he decides to go to the body, then it's goodnight for the opponent!!
Also, RJJ's style is a favourite of mine. The lead leaping lefthook that knocked so many opponents out was awesome! Plus if you watch him, he always ducked or moved out of the way of a punch that was never thrown!! That's just great anticipation and the sign of an all-time great.
jujitsujn 11-15-2004, 10:02 PM I agree, I love Roy's style. Feint, feint...SMACK!

Yeah. I noticed that as well. I was watching his fight with Clinton Woods the other night and I noticed how he feinted a jab and threw a lead right and then quickly ducked/side-stepped left before Woods could even think of countering or doing anything...
nezahualcoyotl 12-05-2004, 01:54 AM the best/most entertaining are going to have to be Jorge El Maromero Paez...handzdown.
nezahualcoyotl 12-05-2004, 01:55 AM oh yea kant forget about Emmanual Agustus a.k.a. the black dude with a fro...****in hilarious! lol...he was in a fight of the year with mickey ward...i swear he has some mexican blood in him!
sean2079 12-05-2004, 06:35 AM JMM style against manny is good but JMM's after manny was too boring..
Dark Destroyer 12-05-2004, 06:49 AM I used to love watching Roy Jones's style because the man had plenty of it. Opponents used to fear his speed and you never knew which angle a punch was going to come from. lol
sean2079 12-05-2004, 07:09 AM i like MAB boxing style.
Hunna 12-05-2004, 07:40 AM Marvin Hagler had a great style, he came foward, plus could counter punch. He was a very under-rated fighter. There would be no-one around today who you could say would effectively neutralise him

Good point there, i used to love Haglers style. Especially the way he used to switch stances.
puppy_dogg 12-05-2004, 07:57 AM jones was my favorite, it was cool how he could do the same things over and over in a fight and the guys could'nt stop it cause it was so damn fast. he could also mixed things up very well, the feints were amazing, guys never knew where he was throwing next.

I miss watching Roy fight like he used to. Moving to Heavyweight then moving back down is the thing that ****ed him up in my opinion. It was awful watching him getting beaten by Glencoffe. He was one in a million.
Hudson_Hawk 12-05-2004, 08:25 AM JMM style against manny is good but JMM's after manny was too boring..
Shall we say effective? But pure counter punchers will always be boring. They don't move not until the other fighter attacks . . . reason why JMM has always been booed a lot of times . . . for lack of action.
ispayder 12-05-2004, 08:55 AM How come nobody liked the style of Hamed? In his prime, he is also very exiting to watch. Just asking, I don't like him either.
jack_the_rippuh 12-05-2004, 10:03 AM How come nobody liked the style of Hamed? In his prime, he is also very exiting to watch. Just asking, I don't like him either.
Yeah, I use to know alot of non-boxing fans who use to talk about him..
simeraksou 12-05-2004, 10:45 AM I like the style Mike Tyson used becuz it fits me. I am short for the hw divison just like him, so I think it would fit me well if I learned how 2 use his style and something of my own effectivly
nice tyson drawing. it looks like he has muscles on his face even
drag0n_ 12-05-2004, 11:42 AM I thought Hameds' style was awesome to watch and truly unique
bchynn 12-05-2004, 03:36 PM I like the swarmer style with various angle movements that can keep the opponent off track. Getting swarmed by a fighter who hits you at different angles...very tough.

I agree....Marquez didnt bore me at all! I love a true technician, and that he definately is. Nothing wrong with smart boxing....I love a knockout artist as much as anyone, but sometimes theres nothing as satisfying as watching a true technician ply his craft. I love it all pretty much; the hungry, relentless stalking type, and those that define the "sweet science" ;) ONly thing I cant stand is a Ruiz-type hug fest! :(

Did you see JMM vs Peden? JMM was brutal in that fight. :D

Hmmmmm, have to check my documents! Cant believe that I cant remember that one off the top of my head :o

Want me to tell you about it? Or you wanna look for it so i dont spoil it for you in case u havent seen it.
mic573 12-05-2004, 04:04 PM Yeah Marquez really took it to Peden. Won the fight easy and forced a stoppage when Peden started coughing up blood in the corner.
mic573 12-05-2004, 04:06 PM I like watching the pressure styles of Duran, Chavez and Tito but I also like seeing Hopkins break his opponents down.
tracylee 12-05-2004, 04:12 PM Yeah Marquez really took it to Peden. Won the fight easy and forced a stoppage when Peden started coughing up blood in the corner.
DAAAYYYYMMMMNNNNN!!!!!! Sounds fierce! Hang on Ultimate and let me make sure I dont have it taped...it may still be out of the country  . Thanks for the offer ;)
Great 12-05-2004, 04:20 PM Skilful pressure with many punches and good guard. "Tyson" style.
RipTheJacker 03-18-2005, 06:13 PM Sal Sanchez
Lights Out
Ali
Tyson
Spadafora
Mayweather
TyrantT316 03-18-2005, 06:16 PM Floyd and X
PessimisticPug 03-18-2005, 06:38 PM When I was a young amatuer a man named Greg Rice showed up at the gym and took me under his wing. This man was a great instructer of the outside game of boxing. Employing the jab was a trademark for him. He got me working on the outside controlling the guys in my fights with a jab and good movement. I enjoyed this style, it kept you from getting busted up and won me alot of fights. He was always having me watch Ray Robinson on film, he trained me in his image. Lots of jabs, set it up with a feint and drop the right followed by the hook. I loved that guy, wish we never parted.
When I turned pro Jackie asked me who I wanted to train me and I choose a man named Johnny Moore. This guy was a conditioning freak. He got me in great shape and I was always able to fight strong when I was with him. The thing that he changed was that he made me an aggressive fighter instead of an outside fighter. His theory was if that man moves here, you cut him off and dig. If he moves there, you cut him off and dig even harder. He made me an in your face fighter that would never give an opponent a chance to breathe. The best thing that he got me doing was rolling with shots while coming in and countering hard off of them. It was power man, the power to do what ever you wanted to a man.
Before I turned pro Jackie wanted me to have one last amatuer fight so Johnny and I went to Ohio to fight a hometown guy who was planning on turning pro. I was his test and he was mine to see if we were ready. I stayed in this guys face from the opening bell, rolling and countering, it was awsome. He was afraid after a while to even throw a punch because I would stick one or two right back in his ass when ever he did. Him being tentative to throw left me the oppertunity to dig and to dig hard. At one point I had him in a corner and was bustin' on him something good. He actualy turned his back to me and raised a leg up for extra protection, he was outclassed.
I like the boxing on the outside, its effective and usefull when you cant wlak through a guy. But fighting with endless aggression was cool, it gave me the power to take a man out but more than that it gave me a chance to take his heart. I could see it in their eyes when they knew they werent going to get out of this one. As Johnny used to say, "I got a lil' white boy here, sez hes agonna kick all yo'all asses, whose first." It was cool..............Rockin' :boxing:
sc21A 04-10-2005, 10:26 AM I like hopkins as well as Trinidad they are both technically sound and are moving and stuff like that, looking for that one punch, gotta love those styles.
Truth 04-10-2005, 10:35 AM I like the the boxer/puncher types like James Toney, but I also like the pure boxers like Floyd Mayweather.
I like the way PoPo fights, minus the quitting. He holds his hands low, dances around laterally and throws serious bombs. He was tagging casamayor to next friday, and I loved that style of boxing. One of the best pure boxer/punchers in the sport. I also like it when the little quitter starts trading.
He So loads up on haymakers. Its cool as fugg.
Kid Achilles 04-10-2005, 11:29 AM My favorite styles would probably be
The stalker. Lots of forward movement and everything follows comes off the jab. Sonny Liston and especially Joe Louis were two greats that employed this style.
The swarmer. Joe Frazier, Rocky Marciano, Jake LaMotta. Never a backward step. Defense is mostly crouching, the bob and weave, and rolling with the punches that do hit. Very high, bordering on frenzied, workrate. Wear your opponent down and rob him of his will to fight.
kapersky 04-10-2005, 01:16 PM young tyson invincible and his "killer instict"
holyfield
jcc
and lewis. if i was a boxer i would be like lewis, he didnt got hit a lot and always dominated. though i want tyson style more but it seem like he his size and reach force him to be in best shape all the time to could dominated. but lewis can be bad trained but still dominated becuase of his size and style.
tracylee 04-10-2005, 01:53 PM I pretty much like it all (except for the 'huggers'!!). Really just depends on my mood; sometimes I wanna see a slugger and an exciting ko..sometimes theres nothing like watching a true technician ply his craft. So, I'll take some of all of it I suppose! :D
Personal fav's would be Morales, Gatti, Tszyu, young Holyfield
chaawuu 04-10-2005, 08:03 PM i really like Mormeck's style. he's so damn powerful
Slipx 04-11-2005, 01:46 PM My favorite style is something like B-Hop uses. Sure, it isn't very entertaining, but I use a reflex-dependant style as well and never take clean punches, and the result of this will mean an extremely long career in Boxing. That's where all these young cats go wrong, developing this aggressive style thinking they are invincible and whatnot. When you get on that elite level with that style, you'll go through a few wars, then you'll be somewhat scarred, and then you'll have ten years left, maximum, to fight. Whereas a guy looking to counterpunch that never gets punched cleanly, can go on for 20, even 25 years after that first stepup to the elite level. It's all about damage accumulation, and counterpunchers that don't get hit simply stay in the game longer. They get more ring experience because their fights tend to drag out onto the later rounds, and finally, they make the sport look better to intelligent outsiders by being strategic in the ring, rather than putting on a primal, brutal spectacle of destruction.
ps- and fighters who get punched less look better in interviews, "spinal."
Dr.Pugilist 04-11-2005, 02:01 PM Frazier , Tyson are fun to watch..but I can't fight like that.
Ali was fun to watch.
Louis and Robinson I like because of their fundamentals and power.
Nowadays my favorite is James Toney hands down. Old school sideways stance and pinpoint counterpunching...that's skill.
